Kerbal Space Program

I suspect that the most fuel efficient way of reversing an orbit in KSP would be to boost until your apoapsis is on the very edge of the SoI, and then reverse the orbit from the apoapsis. Either that or heading out of the SoI completely for the maneuver.

No matter how you do it, the solution will be incredibly pricey in terms of fuel.

Thanks guys I thought I was missing something.

So it is best really in the pre-launch planning to decide which direction of orbit, something I missed in that mission.

yep, i've only reversed orbits twice, once was with a ludicrously over-designed rocket that had way more fuel than i needed, the other involved some dodgy aerobraking and slingshotting around laythe [to be fair felt awesome when i managed it.

you can, if you're good with precise orbits get your orbit to reverse on contact with a planet [by entering from the other side], thats how i ended up [by accident] in the laythe scenario.

Inclination changes are most effective at Apoapsis and the higher the less dV is required. You just have to take into consideration how much dV it is going to take to get as close to the edge of the SoI as possible will take.

Well as a Newbie I am hugely proud of myself. Got to the Mun, landed, did the science and returned to kerbal.

Probably a hugely over-engineered rocket with three stages and about 26,000 credits. Only had about 2 secs of fuel available on the return.

This game is amazing!

Well done, and that sounds perfectly engineered for a full trip to me, i have a habit these days of building rockets that can afford to drop full fuel tanks because of unnessecary stages, and then wondering why i keep going bankrupt in my career :D

I love the new missions in 0.9 – just completed one to put a satellite into low 'keliocentric' orbit. It included a 4.5 hour burn, but was the first proper challenge I've had in a long time (probably since I conquered Eve).

I found money management hard early on, but I haven't found myself running out later in the career.

Roll on 1.0.

I think the 2 secs of fuel could have been more if my piloting skills were better. I hate that last bit of landing I just can't seem to get the balance right. I am either coming down like a meteor or just about to touch down and I shoot myself back up.

Managed the next moon, Minmus with the same design. I found it easier as it has far less gravity.

The missions seemed to have switched to Space stations and outpost which I am dreading as the docking looks hugely complicated.

At the moment I have about £1 million credits but I can see the heavy rockets cost a mint so I am concerned about bankruptcy.

The profitable missions I have found are the satellite launches which I can do for about 10k and receive 130k+ for, getting a bit tedious doing them now and the space around Kerbin a bit crowded. :D

If you are bouncing back up it might be worth binding the kill throttle key to something you can reach easily, should help you from overdoing it perhaps?

Yeah, I think it is just I need more practice. I am getting there, managed my Minmus landing first time only expending the tiniest amount of fuel. Bounced one though, lol.

My 1st mun landings was either I didn't have enough fuel get off the mun or getting stranded in orbit due to lack of fuel

Just in the process of building a refuelling station around the mun

I've been playing this a while now and yet tho get to duna

Anyone know if interstellar mod is working on current version of ksp

the flying will come with practice. the landings can be tricky especially with low fuel, often i tend to have ascent and descent as seperate stages so i know exactly how much fuel i have [plus if you rig the takeoff right it looks cool as heck]

when it comes to docking, with the new sas systems it's not as hard as it used to be. the hardest part is getting the maneuvers down to get within a reasonably close distance. [precision is key]

once you're within docking, sas set to target [pointing at the docking port] and chase cam are your freinds [makes it so you can predict which key moves where], be careful with the rcs [dont just hold it down you'll go flying all over the show, short bursts] and a bit of practice with small vehicles that are more maneuverable will get you going.

I am trying to find some decent tutorials on docking. Basically I grabbed a contract to stick a space station in orbit that had 3 kerbals in it and the capacity for 5. I stuck a docking rig on it but their only chance of returning to earth is in a rescue ship.

They have been up there about a year now so I think it is time to go get them. Would be nice to add some more modules too and a fresh crew.

Have a look at Scott Manley's tutorials. I haven't watched them myself, but he is the go to guy for all things KSP, and he has a tutorial video for docking.

The good news is that for the next update (1.0) the tutorials are getting revamped and expanded, so hopefully there will be a decent tutorial for docking

fortunately kerbals dont breathe or eat or drink, but they do get bored so some kind of satellite tv is needed :D

my last big project was to build a big space station [about 4x the size of the real iss], but lag forced me to stop half way through :(

Not played this in about 3-4 months again, I think its time to get back into space and beyond!

It seems that every time I reach & land on Duna that I stop playing, I think I kept going dumb on how to make a colony base and I was awful at docking (red: never managed it) so was very limited in what I could do!

Any mods recommended with the current version? Is 64 bit working crash free yet? :D

You never managed docking, you need to.

Practice docking, and wait for the next realise before doing anything big.

When you get bored you go large.

I know I need to :D I just can't seem to get it right, even with Mechjeb auto rendezvousing me to ~150m, I still can't get docked aside from once where I got lucky which was just:

Docking Port
RCS Tank & Jets
Fuel Tank
Small Engine

So very little point other than woop! :D

Do you put RCS points all over evenly for easier docking control? I think I used to put mine up at the top only.

When is the next release due?
