Kerbal Space Program

Getting quite obsessed now!!

Finally landed my six crew science station on the Mun and then returned it to Kerbin with surface samples and flags planted to fulfill a couple of contracts in one go.
Took a few goes, including several Mun crashes and one sharp re-entry that smashed my guys straight into the sea!!!

Got a genuine sense of achievement from completing that one!

Spent the science on the surface scanner and the survey scanner.

Also took on three separate rescues from Kerbin orbit.

My plan is to rescue all three in one flight (tricky!), then the one I'm probably going to struggle with most is a mission of my own devising...

I want to build a craft that can land on the Mun (probably Minmus actually as the lower gravity is more forgiving), drop off the surface scanner and then take off into orbit for the survey scanner.

Major props to you guys and all the crazy stuff you've made happen in this thread, I can't wait to be able to do similar :D

Getting to planets outside of the Kerbin SOI is a pain really. The game doesn't really give the full tooling you need for lining up when to burn (unless I've missed a setting) so you find yourself having to use websites to provide details like the phase angle. Even then I've often found it in accurate.

I agree that it's missing a tool to determine optimum launch windows. I think it should be built into the tracking station, unlocked later in the game.

If anyone is having trouble with getting to other planets then I found this website is really useful

http://ksp.olex.biz/

Of course those of us that started on 0.13 remember a time when you had to perform a maneuvre, but not know if it was good until you reached the place you were going – if the focus of your orbit switched then congrats, if not, try again!

Remember the time before such websites and before decent or was it any manoeuvre nodes. Those where the hard days. Haven't played latest version yet, still waiting for a few addons. Plus playing GC3 atm.

Yeh I remember the route to the Mun literally being getting into a 100km 90 degree orbit then burning until you have roughly the right aopsis once you see the Mun appear on the horizon!

I still prefare eyeballing Mun + Minimus. But its not as efficient as maneuver nodes.
As for other planets, still struggle with them. :o

I am looking forward to the next hotfix 1.0.3 and how it will affect the atmo and SSTO craft.
Should be soon..

Looks like most mods I want have been updated, so going to shortly start a hardcore career game.

Been all over this the last couple of days, and watching a guy called Jimorian on Twitch too.

Finally getting the hang of orbital rescues, although not well. Having little trouble hopping to and from the Mun and Minmus, but still can't get my head around getting to anything beyond Minmus just yet. A goal for tomorrow I think!!

Nice work bulletv1! Impressive

Cheers. I docked a lander capsule to it and took it to a low orbit of the Mun and now converting loads of data into science. But I really need to earn loads money to upgrade my research facility to unlock the next level of the tech tree. Then off to Duna i go.

Sun, Kerbin and Minmus as Bob goes science Harvesting. Came back with 1050 science. And also me docked with my space station processing data. Lander Module back on Kerbin now, only just made it though as i really needed all 3 parachutes and lost one on re entry.

Ok this game is seriously peeing me off now, like so much!

I've chosen this 1 star mission to do, which is test the LV 909 Terrier liquid fuel engine at 3 points:
Kerbin
Sub-orbital trajectory
70,000 to 84,000 m

Now then, the Kerbin one is easy, just sit on launch pad. However to get the others you have to go above 70,000 but below 84,000 to get them 'ticked off' ... easy enough!

BUT soon as you dip below 70,000 to land and recover your vessel to complete the mission these objectives untick themselves. WTF - so how am I supposed to complete it then?

Also how the heck do I land from that altitude, tried saving some liquid fuel and aiming my rocket into space as Im coming down to slow me down but the forces and heat still burn and destroy every single one of my parachutes.

Help please,
one very frustrated gamer.

Parachutes? You might find you have to actually go faster to land cleaner, so you can spend more time in the higher atmosphere to slow down gradually. Alternatively use the engine to slow you down smoothly.
Imagine you might just be able to get away with tonnes of parachutes if all else fails though!

You're not reading it correctly (in fairness it's not exactly clear at times).

You have to be on a sub orbital flight over Kerbin and be between 70k and 84k when you activate the engine via staging.

As for landing, just wait till right clicking the parachute says its safe. Unless you are carrying unneeded weight you'll be fine.

EDIT: When testing engines, depending on your tech level its worth noting you can set the thrust limiter to 0 so the engine doesn't actually do anything when activated for the test, this lets you put things in somewhat more exotic locations.

You have to activate it through staging to get the achievement. The ticks just show that you are currently meeting that particular requirement (I.e. Your ship is at the correct altitude).

When you want to test an engine at a certain altitude, you have to use another engine to get you to the correct altitude, use safe to detach that engine and then active the engine you are testing.

So I cannot activate the engine before that point, lets say 60,000m in order to reach the 70,000m needed? Its hard building rockets, when I attach the large solid fuel booster the damn rocket just keeps flipping over about 4000m above ground. Despite it all being balanced and not touching the controls and having SAS on....

Sighhhhh.
