Kerbal Space Program

Gagging get within 500m separate my habitation module and guess what can't control it. Even transferred Jeb into the crew tank think. But obviously isn't reconised as a command module.

I need to download sat relay mod and get some Satelites up, just to make sure I can control these things.

either set up action group, or right click and deploy, although you need electricity.
if your out of power you can eva and get your kerbal near them then right click.

Ah, got it thanks. I now have a small probe in orbit with a single ion engine on the back. Damn that ion engine is power hungry. Even with 2 solar panels correctly oriented and a thermoelectric generator, I can only run the ion engine at about 2/5 of maximum output otherwise it drains my energy. Still, I'm hoping it gives me enough delta vee to insert it into orbit around the Mun.

Edit: success! I managed to ease it into a sub 300km orbit around the Mun, and it took the patience of a saint given how slow it was, and the fact that you can't fast forward when your engines are firing (they should really make an exception for ion drives).

I still have more than three quarters my xenon fuel too, so I could quite easily break orbit and fly somewhere else.

Shortly after orbital insertion:

Fast-forwarded a bit to show Kerbin-rise over the Mun :D

I know it's only a probe orbiting the moon, but it feels like a monumental achievement. Has anyone actually been able to land on the Mun or anything else yet?

so 0.18.1 is out, however i cant update as always, so have to download the full game again?!

Well my copy was prepared to update; But just take 1-2 hours to do it! Not sure myself why.
So I downloaded a fresh copy, an transferred my saves over. Took about 15 minutes an less bandwidth.

I tried the update but it told me I have 70+ corrupt files and so on. Find that hard to believe having only installed the game at the weekend! (new pc build)

Will just grab the manual update at some point.

So, inspired by .18 (and not at all by seeing Apollo 13 a couple of days ago) I've been doing my best to create kerpollo, i.e. 3 stage launcher, escape tower, Lem under the command module until I'm on a mun intercept then undocking swinging the CM round and redocking, and having a 2 stage lander with a descent module left on the surface of the Mun.. What I'm curious about is a free return trajectory (Which they used up to Apollo 11, then changed to a hybrid from 12+). I haven't had much luck though, anyone have a reliable way to set up a free return trajectory with the Mun?

As far as I can work out, the gravity doesn't work like reality, I think the ship doesn't feel any gravitational effects from the Mun until it enters it's SOI, and and while it's in the Mun SOI it doesn't feel any gravity from Kerbin. Am I miles off the mark?

Something like this image is the trajectory I'm after. I realise that this image is simplifying by having the moon and earth static, but you get the idea.

Imaged Snipped:

Your point I highlighted: is 100% accurate.
KSP back in version 0.10 was capable of handling "Multi-body Physics" Where the Sun + Kerbin + (Other bodies*) where capable of influencing the ships orbit.
* Back then only Kerbin + Sun bodies existed.

Since then KSP has been simplified to only handle "One Body Physics". This means the Kerbin affects your ship orbit while in its SOI, or moving out the Suns SOI affects your orbit.
Or been caught in Jool's SOI, then Jool, affects your orbit.

The only reason why KSP was simplified was to save on CPU overheads.
When you create a ship with 300 parts, an only have Kerbin influencing your orbit, that's 301 basic physics equations a frame.
Now if you had Multi-body Physics, your CPU would have to account for 300 Parts, been affected by 3 bodies! (Kerbin, Sun, Minimus).
Thats 300x3 = 900 equations a frame. :o
You can quickly see how those maths could cause some CPU issues.

I remember playing KSP back in version 0.8 with my i5 Rig, an my CPU struggled with 100 Parts @ 5FPS, cause of Multi-body Physics an un-optimized code.
Now with Single Body Physics an better coding my same i5, manages 600+ Parts at 15FPS. :D
KSP is now Laptop friendly, back then it was barely Gaming Rig friendly...

That's all the mods, despite what it says, it will delete all mods and any edited files. so basically you have to start all again.
Good thing I didn't get to far into my space station.

Are you sure?
It said I had 700+ Corrupt files, when I tried updating. An I am a Purist. I think the Squad up-dater is having an identity crisis. :p

grrr patcher is failing and on website I can only see where to download patcher, where do I download the fullgame?

Cant download the full game.
Squad really want to push the Patcher, it apparently saves a lot of Bandwidth on there end.
So download the latest Patcher again, unzip into new folder an download every anew, its only another 330MB.

although I agree when you first start you should be a purist, once you learn to do stuff and it becomes easy, mods make the game play more exciting. using the relay network and gps network. or will be when I have it working again.

Thanks, putting it in an empty folder worked.

My main airplane designs:

Single Stage To Orbit (SSTO): SERENITY.
Requires a Lifter Stage to assist, an ideally needs refueled once in stable Kerbin orbit, but will be great for Laythe in atmo; Or crew rotations. :D

HIGH SPEED DESIGN: EXCALIBUR.
This design was initially given to me by EXCALIBUR on the KSP Forums, Hence the name.
I reworked his design to make it smaller, lighter, an much more stable at speed. Testing has shown its Aviation Fuel addiction (2 units a second. :o ) + incredibly speeds up-to 1732M/s (Mach 5.1)
As a result, expect the North Pole in 10-12 minutes, an 80KM Sub-orbital flight, souring over entire continents.

ALL Designs will be released on the KSP Forums soon: Happy Shopping Kerbalnaughts. :)

first GPS/Relay satellite in orbit. not quite on a Geo stationery orbit :(
screenshot0zc.png

Geo Stationery is 2868.4km as you can see i'm slightly off that.
I also read if you orbit at 475km then transfer. if you are 90degress away from KSC when you start transfer, you'll go straight above it. i'm not far off, but a little miss timed.

oops picture taken at precise height, its not quite that perfect on the full orbit.

6 gps sats up, not very well spaced out at all :(, need to work out how to do this but for 6 rather than 3. hopefully they'll reply on the forum.

You\'re going to have to do some math for this one.

You\'re going to have to decide how far apart in phase you want your satellites, and work out the orbit that puts you back at the Kerbin-Synchronized altitude that far ahead or behind your target.

Say you want three satellites at 120-degree intervals. It\'s actually easiest to do this if you bring all three satellites at once.

Get yourself into Kerbin-Synchronous orbit, at 2868.4 km altitude. Drop the first satellite.

Now you want to drop the next one 120 degrees behind. You\'ll want to be back where you are now in 4/3 * the Synchronous orbit period, or eight hours. Grabbing an orbit calculator and doing some quick calculations, that means an apoapsis altitude of 4335.6 km for a periapsis of 2868.4.

Burn to put your apoapsis at that distance, orbit once, then when you get back into the Synchronous orbit, circularize. The first satellite is now 120 degrees ahead of you. Drop the second satellite.

Burn to push your apoapsis out to 4335.6 km again. Go around again. Circularize again. Drop the third satellite. You now have three satellites at 120-degree intervals. For now, anyway

And SatMap mapping. once I have the other 16 sats up. I can then make a plane and go fine all the kerbin Easter eggs.

The comsat looks really good, especially the 2D colour output render of easter eggs.
But honestly even with Stock parts I have more objects that ever time to achieve them.

Any more cool/whacky designs: Rockets, Planes, Probes?

Got to dres :) But can't get home. Took roughly 1400 days. I did the rendezvous approach. I flew around the inside, then when i got close enough i burned straight to the planet/rock. Took only 1 attempt. When i burned, i was about 950km away from. But the orbit took forever and getting on the right orbit plane used up so much fuel, i cant get back :(

I used the same ship to get to jool, duna, eve and I nearly got to moho with it.

For some reason this game makes my PC lock up when in the vehicle assembly building after a few minutes. The signal is cut to the screen and the LED's on my GTX285 turn red. I can't find a cause for it!
