Kerbal Space Program

For some reason this game makes my PC lock up when in the vehicle assembly building after a few minutes. The signal is cut to the screen and the LED's on my GTX285 turn red. I can't find a cause for it!

Have you VSYNC Enabled in KSP?
If you don't, the VAB/SPH have a habit of working any GFX hard, potentially overheating it.

Also have you dont have SLI enabled?
KSP doesn't appear to like SLI or CrossFire been enabled.

I am not 100% sure this advice will fix your issue, but give them a try. :p

Whilst I love the complexity and challenge of this game, others would lose patience very rapidly and without a good set of tutorials it won't achieve mass sales. Without cheating by using mods or other people's ships, I just cant see how to build a reliable launch vehicle so I can start playing around with stations.

Hell yeah. One small step for Kerbal, one giant leap for Kerbal kind.

Unfortunately, the engines broke off and the lander tipped over, so they're stranded there. I don't think there was enough fuel for a return trip anyway.

Khrest, there's a stock rocket called Kerbal X or something like that. The thing I just landed on the Mun with was only a slightly modified version of that. I'm sure if you use that as a starting point, you can get a few station modules into orbit.

Question: is there a simple way to judge transfer orbits? I mean, say you're in a more or less circular orbit around Kerbin and you want to reach the moon - at what point in the orbit do you want to start the burn? The way I've been doing it so far is to burn at periapsis to extend the altitude of apoapsis until it reaches the Mun's orbit. Then I just fast-forward time until the Mun happens to come close enough to my ship at apoapsis to capture it. But is there a simple way to do it first time?

Again, if you've just escaped Kerbin and want to fly to Duna, what's the easiest way to go about it?

Edit: well I could go ahead and do the maths, but that would be annoying.

for the mun its easy if you're in a 90 degree orbit. just keep pointing pro grade and when the moon starts to rise above kerbin, burn baby burn.

Grinning like madman here :D

Managed to build a SSTO spaceplane after trying over and over this week. Managed to just about get into space with an orbit matching my station with sod all fuel left. Couldn't dock with the station initially due it not having a docking port that stuck out. So undocked the fuel tank section from the station and docked it to the ship.
Topped the fuel up on the Plane from the big tank, then crashed that into Kerbin (had no fuel left it in after) then docked the Plane up to the rest of the station now that it had a easier to access docking port. Was still damn difficult though, the Plane doesn't have the ability to RCS sideways... so need tweaks before launching a second one!

Docked! :D

how do you use engines in space? surly they don't work? so you cant burn retro grade?

I'm still satellite placing. 8 so far, 9th on its way up. Thank God mechJeb is working once again, makes life so much less tedious.

I've got a single Aerospike Engine on the back.

The twin turbojets get me up to around 1km/s at 20km or so, then I light the aerospike and cut the jets out. Just about gets me into my 150km orbit for rendezvous with the station.
Was really really hard work, I managed to get into orbit almost perfectly lined up with my station, realistically I'm not sure if I'll be able to do it again. On the other hand I might be able to optimise my route out of the atmosphere :)

Nice I haven't played around with the planes in 0.18 yet. Need to finish my gps system out first. Or might switch after this polar ring is finished.

wow plans have ot so much better in 0.18.

doing 1400m/s and still accelerating, holding around 21km high.
How far around kerbin can I get before running out of speed, also wonder what speed it'll stop accelerating at.

edit 1.8km/s and just under 1/2 of the way around kerbin.

Now to strip off extra weight and see what I can do.

2.033km/s before flame out and death, 3/4 of the way around kerbin. I will make it back to KSC in one flight darn it. Touch and go if it would make it back to KSC on fuel.

Biggest problem is just keeping it level, I wish there was a mod, just to hold the plane steady and not rise or fall.

EPIC:
Got any pictures, so we know what design your using?

Managed to hit 1712m/s with my Space Plane on Jet engines only after burning up all the rocket fuel. zoom. Shame it won't do that speed with rocket fuel on board at 25km.... Would make getting to space easier!

eugh 2 ships i had orbiting jool have been thrown out off the orbit and they are doing some long orbit around the sun :( so many planets in jool.

Solar Eclipse! :D

Managed to refine my SSTO design so it can get into space bit easier, it's not the most efficient thing really, but it functions enough to get it to my station for refuel. Also got a lot better at rendezvous + docking now :)
Got 2 Planes docked at the station fueled and ready to go, might see how one flies in the atmosphere of another planet!

Well i've given up trying to get .18 to work in wine. Doubtless the game itself runs fine, but the patcher just won't play ball, and with no full download this time i might have to wait for native :(

Ohh; That isn't ideal!
Have you emailed or PM'd one of the Dev's, notably Harvester, an specifically asked for a Full Download.
I know they want to avoid creating full downloads, because it tax's the Build Server, but if members specifically request it, I am sure they would happily accommodate you!

Have you tried deleting all files bar the patcher. Also download the patcher from the site, its a different version than in the old game.

I'm just about to get a probe into orbit around Duna. It'll be the first time I've managed to get anything in orbit around another planet. Exciting!

Edit: success!

And with oodles of xenon fuel left, so I could go orbit that moon Ike if I was feeling patient enough.

I've talked to a few people on the IRC about it, Sal was especially helpful. But still, nothing we tried worked so... i wouldn't really want to ask for a full download, it's a lot of trouble to go through and it seems like it would be a case of 'if we do it once then everybody will expect it'.

Did both of those before i even started. It's not about having the wrong patcher, it's about the patcher not running in wine. It's something to do with dotnet, but for whatever reason the fixes just won't work for me.

Hm I think i'll give designing a space station another shot tomorrow. Should probably improve my rocket designing skills too...
