Some one remind me how to build planes. I've forgotten. Haven't touched them for ages.
When a wing sauces 1.9 lift, what's that mean, is there a table somewhere. Say 100m/s on runway, what to age would that lift?
Where should center of weight be in relation to center of lift?
Any other help on good stable plane design?
Hi Glaucus.
I honestly never concern myself with the Lift values.
However when building planes, one must factor for the weight of Engines + Tanks, when deciding how many wings to add.
Me Personally, usually NEVER include enough wings;
To save weight, an to give the craft a more Rocket like flight characteristic
(ie, It flies on the vector you point it, only when the engines are on)
As for Center of Weight + Center of Lift + Center of Thrust...
I find these critically important, regardless of the planes intended an actual flight characteristics.
By getting these correct it's possible to create ultra high speed planes, to heavy cruisers to VTOL or even SSTO craft.
So some trial an error an patients is required; Please don't expect to create a master piece is one night.
Some examples:
(SI) SPARROW.
VTOL Craft.
From the side, notice how the COW + COL + COT all vary slightly.
Making an almost perfectly stable VTOL craft.
Another Angle.
In flight.
Flight Characteristics:
* Stable VTOL at >1M/s.
* Fly's normally, just like a helicopter.
* Top Speed 120+ M/s
* Nose heavy (Intentional) meaning the craft like's pitching forward slight.
* Capable of going backwards at 20-30M/s.
* slightly lazy on controls but responsive an accurate to within feet.
* 30% Throttle for Lift off.
(SI) EXCALIBURE
Named after Forum member, an is my ULTRA High Speed Craft.
Notice how the COW + WOL are almost perfectly matched, but the COT is farther back: This gives the craft a missile flight characteristic.
Power, thanks to 8 Engines.
Re-entry heat, while accelerating into a Sub-orbital trajectory.
Flight Characteristics:
* 8 Engines (2.5units/sec Consumption)
* Main fuselage + 2 Drop Tanks. (Disable Main Fuselage Tanks, until tanks are drained. Then consume rear Fuselage tanks first.)
* Top Speed 1700M/s (28KM ~)
* Cruise Speed 1500M/s
* Sub-Orbital Capable
* Distance 0.5-0.75 The circumference of Kerbin.
* Will Turn Right, when Engines Flame out...
* Stable at very high speeds (However very poor turn rate), an stable as slow as 50m/s.
WARNINGS:
Please familurise yourself with all Action Groups. (Life Saving)
Joystick is recommended.
An now... A link to all my Planes. Do have fun, an please post your results an prototypes.
