King of the Monsters

Getting very mixed reviews, Empire hated it and gave it 1/5

What you’re left with is a catastrophically dumb, thunderously boring blockbuster as numbing and unsatisfying as the worst Transformers movies — even one hilariously nutty sub-aquatic development can’t liven things up. Despite the occasional fan-pleasing plot nod to the original 1954 Godzilla, King Of The Monsters has a glib attitude to nuclear weapons that feels particularly galling considering the creature’s infamous H-bomb subtext, with a seemingly nihilistic outlook that revels in the razing of civilisation and casts the one person concerned about global warming as a crazed radical scientist. King Of The Monsters should be monster fun — instead, it’s a bit of a monstrosity.

Globe-trotting but not adventurous, action-packed but not remotely exciting, utterly overstuffed and completely paper-thin. Nuke it from orbit.

In my opinion the only people that will enjoy these film most are Godzilla fans, annoying really you will never get consistent review from same journalist for a franchise.
Looking at the Empire reviews online, there are two entry review for the 2014 Godzilla both written by two different people and the Kong Skull Island was also wrote by someone else too.
I will be going to see the movie somepoint still.

Well I’m off to see it at lunchtime, watched the 2014 film again last night, and my expectations are middling. There are no reviewers around now who’s opinion I “trust”, Kermode is as close as I get, as they seem to be a mix of pretentious douches and people who have a camera, a Google account and an opinion so I’ll trust my own opinion once I’ve seen a film I have an interest in.

Is the 2014 film the boring one with endless willy teasing of Godzilla on in-movie TV clips but then virtually no action / Godzilla screen time :p

That was baaaad.

Yup.

This one does not do that at all according to a review that i've seen. It does not hold back the monsters.

Still looks visually spectacular but I'm wondering how well the story will hold up TBH.

Are people actually bothered about a story? I thought most people just want to see big monsters smack each other about for 2 hours.

I guess that's why critics favoured Godzilla (2014) more than audiences did; more story and not enough monsters smacking each around. Judging by critics reviews for this film, it should be just what people are looking for.

If you’re happy to switch your brain off and just enjoy King of the Monsters for what it is then it’s enjoyable. I preferred it to the 2014 film.

Those were very, very strange.

Is there much that comes out of Japan that isn't? A country seemingly obsessed with giant lizards\humans\aliens\robots wrecking the place, i'm not even touch on their freaky porn setups with tentacles etc.

I went to see it this afternoon and it's everything I want in a monster movie! Barely passable acting, unlikable characters I don't really care about, plot that makes no sense and of course monsters beating the snot out of each other!

It's dumb leave your brain at the door fun and works fine in that context! :)

First one, too much plot not enough monsters. This one, too many monsters not enough plot. Got to love the critics.

Honestly, if you want to see almost 2 hours of monster battles and destruction; with a paceable plot line sewn in then this is the film for you.

It's pretty much the John Wick 3 of monster battles.

I really enjoyed it.

It's okay, fun monsters, but i think it suffers a bit of the Transformer problem where i don't sense the destruction of the cities. Unlike in Pacific Rim where you feel every hit and weight, like how he picks up a ship to use it as a bat.

I wasn't bored though, for a monster movie i guess that's all i can ask for.

Off to watch this Saturday in ScreenX will be interesting to see if they make the battle scenes use the full width or not.

May try and convince the girlfriend to watch this. We watched the 2014 one a few days ago as she hadn't seen it but I think it put her off!
Big CGI monsters wreaking havoc on a city. Sign me up.

*I should say I enjoyed Pacific Rim 2 despite it being comically bad.
