Lane hogging.

UK roads are full of them, I'd say 1/3rd of all traffic on a motorway is sitting in lane 2 or 3 with nothing in lane 1 or 2 for miles.

I'll happily sit in lane 1 and undertake them all.

Europe has DC lane discipline down to a ****ing T - on a 5 day trip through France/Belgium/Luxembourg and Germany this summer there was a handful (4-5 at very most!) of lane hoggers over probably 400 motorway miles.

They overtake something and within 3 seconds, indicator on and back into the correct lane. If they don't they get a white van 3 inches from their bumper with full beam on, while doing 130kph. :D

After coming off the Eurotunnel and onto the M20 I counted 5 middle lane morons in the space of 2 miles.

The general standard of driving here is downright scary.

Dunno about that. French drivers are notoriously bad. Especially at parking :D

Honestly, I'm sick and tired of it. It's one thing doing 70 in the right hand lane (Pretty much all roads around me are all 2 lanes, not 3), another doing 50 in a 70 in the right hand lane! Had someone yesterday in an Audi 4x4 doing around 50. They were very close to the centre line as well and after 2 miles, they finally, but very slowly, moved over the to left hand lane.

Funnily enough, a few weeks back I was having a conversation with my mum, and this subject came up. We are discussing how much we despised lane hoggers. Turns out, she is one of them! She thinks because she is doing 70 in a 70 (For example), that no one should be going any faster, therefore it's ok to stay in the lane.:mad::(

Why do people do it? Is there anyone here who thinks it's acceptable to sit in the outside or middle lane despite not overtaking imminently and having cars behind you? I've asked a few people because it baffles me and no one admits to doing it which is strange because the motorways are flooded with these morons....who exactly is it that's doing this?

Because those that do it, are totally oblivious that they're doing it. It's usually the case of "I'm in the middle, this is the best lane", then cruise along at 72MPH.

Edit, annnnd it's been mentioned already, great!

I find this happens more at night.

I dont particually care if they sit in the middle lane, i will simply undertake them if the inside is clear, at the end of the day they are the ones breaking the law, not me when i undertake them. (police do pull you if you sit in the middle)

Its when the left lane is busy, and they are simply matching the left lanes speed.
then i flash them a few times or go in front and slow down slightly, this causes them to try and overtake me. I then speed off :P

Great fun, and also gets them thinking.

That's not really the advised thing to do and you could potentially end up being rear ended. And if they've got a dashcam, they will ridicule you online for being a brake checking so and so. Best not risk it!

Probably better just to overtake them with a wave of noise and/or speed, then settle down once they're in the distance

The left lane is the truck lane and the right one is the fast lane, so if you just want to cruise you should be in the middle. Everyone knows this surely?

Incidentally I think speed limited vehicles shouldn't be allowed on the motorway.

70mph or higher.

Its massively annoying, although equally annoying is when its you in the outside lane, plainly overtaking, doing the speed limit, and someone decides to sit 3" off yer bumper because 70mph isnt fast enough for them.

Or the other variety of those who pull out while your going past them, and then dont speed up and proceed to crawl at best past the car in front of them, although in fairness they at least have the courtesy to pull in sharp enough after.

I make a point of pulling in when not actually overtaking, unless someones being an ******** by sitting 3" off my bumper in which case i'll make a point of taking my time about it.

People are Morons, simplest answer.

There's no longer any effort to correct mistakes as there's no police to catch people any more or government "public messages" to remind people of what the correct road use is.

The A20 in Kent is one of the busiest A-Roads in Kent and as such it's designed as a NSL road to keep the large volume of traffic flowing, yet every single day it's reduced to a 40mph limit by 1-2 dribbling morons who will be shot at the side of the road to be left as a warning to other drivers when I'm in power :D.

Everyday I see more than 5 morons sitting in the middle lane of the M20 reading their phone whilst doing 50-55mph nose to tail with zero traffic in the left lane and people doing 80+ in the right, until one of the Morons suddenly decides to pull out without looking because they're indicating (which instantly gives of them right of way apparently) whilst still doing 50mph. I genuinely must see 1-2 crashes a week on the 4 roads I travel on daily (40 mile round trip to work).

Despite owning a stupid car I would genuinely love to see dozens of motorway coppers back patrolling the roads and the fines for Middle Lane Morons and phone users changed to an instant 1 month ban and confiscation of their car for 1 week.

Stopping both will cure most traffic problems overnight!

Only lane hoggers ive seen while driving in France or Belgium usually had a GB sticker on the back/numberplate.
Worst part is you get off the chunnel at Folkstone and most folk go from happily driving continental style to full on brain dead middle lane hogging.

Most the people who do it are oblivious to it.

If it's clear i tend to have a quick glance over at the driver when i'm overtaking to try and get some understanding of why they're sat in the middle lane when there is nothing on the inside lane.

got stuck in the left lane for ages because of some idiot in a ka sat in the middle lane, I'd have to go into lane 3 to overtake anything and avoid this ka when moving back into lane 1. In the end there was an opportunity so I put my foot down to undertake it, they decided to try and race me to stop me doing so but luckily the Focus I was in was far too quick and I got well infront with loads of room. They had the nerve to flash me once I was in front, I couldn't believe it!

yeah they are annoying , i generally sit in lane 1 and cruise by them rather than weave all over the place.

echo what someone else said, you see them merge onto the motorway, then immediately drift into lane 2 and stay there, despite the road being empty, totally bizarre.

The police announced they were going to crack down on middle lane hoggers but seemingly found there were too many. A long stretch of the M42 has dozens of gantry cameras which measure your average speed and possibly record vehicles which remain in the centre for the entire 15 mile run of cameras

Lots of drivers of all ages seem to think there are slow lanes and fast lanes when in fact two lanes are nothing more than overtaking lanes
