Lane hogging.

The things that annoys me are people who jump across three lanes as soon as they join the motorway

Argh those people infuriate me, especially when it's unsafe to do so. They often join behind another car and immediately move to the next lane despite still doing minimal speed. Happened to me once on a dual carriageway, when I almost hit him because of it he then made a gesture towards me which very much would've covered what I thought of him.

I find lane hogging only slightly less infuriating than people who don't understand merge in turn, especially the heroes who sit over both lanes to block the "queue jumpers".

there are times when I'll move over slightly, that will be when I see someone about to try and overtake me thinking they are clever, they might not know the road as well as I do and might not know there isn't room for two cars just ahead of me. It leaves me two choices, break hard so they can overtake me in time, or move over so they are no longer tempted :P

Incidentally I think speed limited vehicles shouldn't be allowed on the motorway.

70mph or higher.

Not really thought that one through, have you?

Just off the top of my head:

- Higher cost of goods
- Higher costs to service roads
- More traffic
...

Speed restricted vehicles are rarely the things that cause issues on motorways IME.

Idiots racing around, driving too close and causing crashes are what annoy me.
General lack of understanding what causes traffic. I have to do the M62/M60 everynight and its frustrating watching people go so close to each other so as not to let other people in, even funnier when they go into the back of each other. If only people would leave gaps and allow people to merge.

The sooner all motorways are smart motorways the better, set it to 40mph around junctions and i bet it would all flow better.

Quite the opposite.

Its the ones who pull out in the middle lane to overtake another HGV going 1mph slower than cause the long tailbacks and issues as it effectively shuts the motorway down to a 1 lane, which is then compounded by people pulling into the right hand lane who then overtake the rolling blockade and pull into the right hand lane at 1mph faster than the 2 lorries blocking the first 2 lanes.

If not a mandatory 70 for the left lane, it should be a mandatory 70 if you pull into the middle or right hand lanes.

I agree with this, trucks should just stay in the outside lane, they should also learn to give way when merging onto a motorway they bug me so much when they get along side and just start moving over.

In some EU countries it's illegal for lorries to overtake on dual carriageways. We should at least do the same here.

I just decided that majority of people are dumb and going around them or not putting yourself at risk is the best idea. There's simply no fix for stupidity and plain ignorance. I know adults who drive without seat belts all the time, who text while driving etc do they take any notice of what I say? no.. but what can I do? the whole world is a mess :o

People not recognising that a lorry is about to pull out are just as much of an issue. They slam their brakes on causing a ripple of people do to the same, causing delays miles down the road. If we were all a little more patient things would run a lot smoother. Banning HGVs makes no sense at all, it just creates significantly more traffic on back roads, forcing more drivers into the motorways.

It's a massive issue up here at the moment. They completed works on the A1 Western Bypass in June whereby at the start of the works what used to be a slip road now becomes lane 1 and then disappear as a slip off about 5 miles later. Sounds great doesn't it? An extra lane to cope with the ever increasing amount of cars on our road. It would be except the vast majority of drivers seem oblivious to the fact this new lane now exists. They quite happily sit in Lane 2/3 for the entire journey until they're ready to come off, then move over to Lane 1 then onto their slip

It's not all bad though, it means a lot of the time I can sit in Lane 1 at the speed limit and pass every single one of these morons, even after I've passed they'll still remain in lane 2!

You know my sneaky trick too! Amazing how many people flash me...

The M1 and M25 are great for that too! Numerous times I've been using the virtually empty lanes 1-2 at 70mph while lane 3 is packed and doing 60mph or slower and lane 4 is doing 80mph..

What part of peoples brains doesn't work properly when they can see cars going faster than them on their left but decide that staying in the traffic of lane 3 is preferable???

I find this happens more at night.

I dont particually care if they sit in the middle lane, i will simply undertake them if the inside is clear, at the end of the day they are the ones breaking the law, not me when i undertake them. (police do pull you if you sit in the middle)

Its when the left lane is busy, and they are simply matching the left lanes speed.
then i flash them a few times or go in front and slow down slightly, this causes them to try and overtake me. I then speed off :P

Great fun, and also gets them thinking.

Jesus really? So you are happy to break the law undertaking and generally being an idiot on the motorway rather than just passing safely and being on your way? It's not your role to 'get people thinking'. I am actually less bothered by people hogging a middle lane and more concerned by dangerous drivers like yourself.

It's not illegal.

I've done it in front of a police officer before. His response was to pull the berk sat in the middle lane over.

Seems a grey area to me..

Stollen from wiki:
"On all roads, undertaking is permitted if the vehicles in the lane to the right are queueing and slow moving. Undertaking in an aggressive or reckless manner could be considered Careless Driving or more seriously Dangerous Driving, both of which are legally enforceable offences."

Sounds to me though that undertaking on the left then brake testing people to try and teach them a lesson is dangerous driving.

Yeah, that's a **** move. However undertaking and pointedly moving in front isn't.
It's the slow moving bit that generally gets you off with it.

I undertake all the time. M25 is terrible for middle laners. They all seem to drive hybrids.

Doing 20k miles a year results in very little tolerance for drivers with poor etiquette. I have a place to be so get in the right place or I'll take the quickest route around you.

The thing that really gets my goat atm are the people who brake to allow 60mph lorries to overtake 55mph lorries on dual carriageways.

That all sounds more dangerous than the middle lane hoggers TBH.

What is so dangerous about passing on the left? I do this all the time, I'm not about to make 4 or 6 lane changes just to pass some middle lane zombie when the road is clear and the left lane is empty.
