Exactly.What a huge waste of money, a desktop can be gotten for < £200.
ive worked out i can claim around £200 pounds a week clear, plus reduced travel etc... been lookign into for the last month. bee scanning the benefits system and think i could increase it, however it requires planning.

As people have already said a £500 laptop is excessive for the scheme. There also doesn't seem to be anything to make sure that they're actualy used for education.
Why not give their schools money to set up terminal servers. Then those students who can't afford computers can be given thin clients (which cost about £200) and ADSL links to there local educational broadband supplier. These will be fine for school work and be much more reliable.
It will also benefit all students.
