Lappy new year!

£528 is way too much, I recently purchased a HP Dv6, which cost £410. This has Windows 7, 4GB ram, Dedicated GPU 250GB on a 15.4 inch screen, I could have spent £250 on a cheap machine with a celeron and integrated GPU.

They should be getting half, it would be fine for homework. Labour really knows how to waste taxpayers money.

ive worked out i can claim around £200 pounds a week clear, plus reduced travel etc... been lookign into for the last month. bee scanning the benefits system and think i could increase it, however it requires planning.

I agree with the above posts about it being a desktop rather than a laptop. "Internet Ready" desktops can be built for sub £100 quite easily. £528 is way way too much to give for a laptop.

Most likely because people from these backgrounds wont have enough space in their house/flat for a desktop. Why they need an expensive laptop (rather than a cheapo £200 job) is anyones guess though. when I was 7-14 having a computer/laptop was not required at all.

Also what happens when these laptops break or become out of date, and who's going to pay for the connection? Surly if they need net access they can use the computers at school, which are properly maintained and have all the necessary software etc installed.

It's a bit like buying someone with no money a car.

But i doubt you'll ever grow the balls to try it.
 
As people have already said a £500 laptop is excessive for the scheme. There also doesn't seem to be anything to make sure that they're actualy used for education.

Why not give their schools money to set up terminal servers. Then those students who can't afford computers can be given thin clients (which cost about £200) and ADSL links to there local educational broadband supplier. These will be fine for school work and be much more reliable.

It will also benefit all students.

what about handing over old government computers, ofcourse replace the hdd, they be cheaper, and reduce the green house gas.
 
I don't see the point of giving laptops to poor households, particularly if the purpose is merely to provide internet access. What's the point of that? Do people think their standard of living will magically increase just because they can download free donkey porn?

Your article clearly estates that the parents are British citizens, they have lived in the UK for 18 years, and all of their children were born here. I am outraged by the cost of their accommodation and infuriated by the stupidity of the local council, but as British citizens they are perfectly entitled to taxpayer funded accommodation.

People who pay tax do get lots of things. Roads for instance. Health Care. I could go on...
