** LATE BUT IN FASHION: SAMSUNG G700 GAMING LAPTOP ARRIVING TOMORROW! **

Whats the 3D like Antx?

Very good. Never had or seen 3d before this laptop, so unlike some people (movie goers) it was a "first" for me.

First off, you laucnh Tri-Def 3D, then you have the option to view movies, pictures, dvd, or games all in 3D. with your glasses on, you first see some flowers that need to look right (like a calibration), then you continue with your selection of what to load up.

Games that are DX9 work best in 3d, because you have a very good framerate to start with (COD MW3 looks very awesome, in that i wouldn't play this now out of 3d mode). Also, F1 2010/11 look great ( i set the CFG file to use DX9 though for better playability in these games) also Farcry 2, flatout 2, Dirt 2/3 etc. wonderful!. I also sometimes play in non-3d, as you don't want too much of it:)

You can view just about anything in 3D BTW, even pics in windows gallery, some look better than others. Same with Video content. DVD's can be launced with Tridef and seen in 3d - even very old ones, it doesn't matter, but some are better than others. Glasses come with usb charger (use USB 3 and theyll be charged in no time!)

There are advanced settings in 3d mode like
Scene Depth Decrease, Scene Depth Increase, overscan, VIRTUAL 3D (i use this a lot as it gives better performance/framerate)

Hope you go on ok with it.

Tony

Okay got mine about an hour ago, first impressions are very good build quality which is 9 out of 10, keyboard feel is again 9 out of 10, the tracker pad is large and buttons feel okay 8 out of 10 (only because the buttons could be better). Weight surprised me, was not as heavy as I expected but feels very solid and has some weight to it.

Not turned it on so far, waiting for the laptop to get up to room temperture because seems it was stored in a very cold place and minute I took it out of the box it started to steam up with condensation. Rather wait till it warms up before sticking the battery and PSU into it.

Came with the 3D glasses, just a note these only work on 3D monitors for PC and NOT TVs as some places seem to think they do and the 3D glasses box and site for it clearly say PC only. ALSO the picture on OCUK shows different 3D glasses, seems they updated the 3D glasses in the 2nd version of this laptop (The version sold at OCUK at the moment is the 2nd version Samsung 700G7A-S02UK, if it ends S01UK it is the 1st version with the 2 x 750GB HDD).

These are the glasses that came with it, can't find them on the English Samsung site but translated from german to english (link at bottom). You will see it also states PC only and the monitors it will work with and of course this laptop but not mentioned there yet.

You get a USB cable to charge them as standard.

OPTIONAL WIRELESS CHARGER if you want to buy that at a later date. Just a picture what it looks like.

Will add more to this as I get to use the laptop and let you guys know how I get on and if it's worth all the hype. So far very nice but not turned it on yet.

In the manual however, it says "When a 3D monitor or TV is connected through an HDMI Interface, the 3D Function is supported on either screen"

3d Looks extra blurred, especially after a skinfull of ale:eek:

Hope you go on ok with it.

Well shes out of the box, and what an impressive pice of kit, build quaility is fantastic, i have Alienware laptop too and in that respect it blows it our of the water:)
Just installed steam and am downloading La Noir,Batman AC, and Skyrim.

I'd love to see one of these in person, but for some reason I still think I'm leaning towards a Clevo (based) laptop. More likely for the handier 15.6 form factor and the fact I could get a GTX580m in it and a matte screen. Lucky enough I'm in a position to be able to wait a month or so, so I'll be very interested to see peoples opinions on the Samsung. (also anyone else think the mode dial is a bit OTT in it's function...?)

Which alien ware mate? I thought they were meant to be very sturdy n robust feeling?

Reviews for the Samsung talk about a cheap plastic feel n too much flex? How you find it after more of a play? I do love the look of it

Well i dont agree with that at all, it look far more sturdier but more kinda elegant and classy than the alienware.
Im quite a big Alienware fan but they are a bit overblown in the looks dept.
It plays really superbly, playing Skyrim in 3d is a great experience when you get used to it;)

I think what they mean there is it will pass 3d content via the HDMI 1.4 and then you will have to use the 3D glasses that came with the other TV or monitor. What I mean is the 3D glasses that come with it will not work on any other screen apart from the Samsung 3D PC screens.

Yes I'm finding the laptop nice and enjoying using it, had one problem it would not play TRON: Legacy 3D bluray correctly at first but there was an update for PowerDVD 10 that fixed it. So just a software problem really. Everything else works great and very impressed by the 120hz screen and the 3D on it. No signs of crosstalk or any of the other nasties you may get with 3D.

I noticed when I set it up at first I setup both HDDs to be seperate drives and not RAID 0 , I clicked the advanced setup and thought it would setup one large drive but now after using it probably was best thing to do and I don't know how much more performance RAID 0 would have given and really not noticing any slow downs with it setup this way, so it will stay this way and atleast can use the 2nd drive now to stick data backups on it and things I don't want to loose when reinstalling the OS for any reason.

Honestly think it's a great value laptop and worth the money (I paid £1400 for it), I linked it to the Plasma TV and was blown away by the video quality in Bluray movies and gaming was amazing on the Plasma and the laptop screen. Does everything a highend desktop rig does in a small package really.

Only things I would have liked would have been an optical link for audio and the HDMI passed out Dolby and DTS, but that maybe the PowerDVD 10 software passing out PCM over HDMI and I need to look into that. I'm sure the AMD HDMI software can pass threw DTS-HD and Dolby-HD just need to figure out how to make Bluray players like PowerDVD use it correctly and I will try my PowerDVD 12 Ultra on it at some point and see if it fixes these issues. I'm sure it's a software thing regarding the HDMI audio.

The hardware is top notch and as I said before only the buttons on the tracker pad could be better, but reading some reviews people like that type of button, maybe i'm just use to the Sony Vaio buttons and need time to get use to the Samsung way of doing things. The Screen is one of the most amazing screens I have seen on a Laptop or Desktop and really is bright and clear and stunning colours, also the viewing angles are amazing you can even close the screen down and a really weird angle and still see it clear. Some people and I were worried the screen may act like a mirror but nope it really is great even in bright lights and I like it more then a matte screen.

Samsung at the moment is showing up the other gaming Laptops for quality, value and performance. Just buy one and you will see what I mean, I was very nervous and had my doubts they could make a laptop for this price do everything right and they did and made everything better than right and I have high expectations and they lived upto them and when I placed the Samsung next to my mates Alienware m17x r3 his screen looked dull and lifeless compared to the Samsung and even he was amazed how nice the 3D was compared to his Nvidia version. Asus and Alienware have had their wakeup call now and need to make their laptops better value and better quality screens and for sure they need to stop using cards like the 560m and pretending they are gaming laptops in this day and age and charging £2500 for low specs.

I will add some pics and other info as I play with it more and if I spot anything strange I will post it here. So far I don't feel bad I spent £1400 on it and feel I have got a great value device for the money and really can't expect anymore for that price and so far plays every game I have thrown at it at either at full Ultra settings or just with AA off or lowered and Ultra or very high. I have been playing Crysis 2 with all the highres textures and DX11 updates (Very High settings or Ultra depending on the part of the game you are in but most of the time Very high and Ultra settings), BF3 (Most settings Ultra), MW3 (All settings maxed). I need to install Fraps and check the FPS, but i'm using my eyes at the moment and can tell if a game is not playable at Ultra settings and knocking the settings down a touch to make it playable as I like to play them.

Grab one while you can they seem to be flying off the shelves from the place I purchased it and many other places, I have a feeling once the USA get their version in April the price may go up a little.

I had mine next to my mates alienware mx17 r3 and the build quality is just as good on the plastic parts and the only thing the alienware had over the samsung was the metal on the lid and the alienware also flexed if you open the screen from one side only. The correct way to open a large laptop screen is from either the middle or by holding both ends to stop it flexing and they both hardly flexed anyway so it is not here or there that. My mate thought my Samsung was a lot nicer to use and he liked the case more and thought looked more grown up and was hiding a lot of power under them looks when it is closed.

He was very impressed by the 3D, screen, keyboard and audio on my Samsung. His screen looked very dull and washed out when placed side by side and the 3D on the samsung made the Nvidia version look silly when we played the same movie on both. He is even planning on maybe selling his laptop to get one and only disadvantage he could really find was the graphics card is not upgradeable like on the Alienware he has but he said hes never ever updated any graphics on a laptop while owning them anyway so not a big loss and he found the AMD card in the Samsung played the games he liked a lot nicer then his 580m in both 3D and 2D, some games were slightly slower on the 6970m and some faster than the 580M we found it depended on the game but the difference was tiny on both and was not really here or there.

The overall impression my mate said was the Samsung looks modern and has a much better screen, 3D glasses and the audio was a touch better on the Samsung when the Dolby feature was used and much louder than the Alienware. Also he realised when looking threw the device manager that most of the components in the Samsung are higher priced extras on the Alienware and not standard parts. The other thing we both agree with is the lid on the Samsung is a bit of a fingerprint magnet but a soft cloth wipes it clean and it is treated with an anti-scratch surface too.

Are you sure the samsung does not use MXM?

It would be the first time a graphics card of that class has been integrated into the motherboard.

I have updated my gfx card a few times, an image of my current card:

Not sure have not opened it up to check, but there is no mention the GPU card can be updated, but you maybe right and it can be and it just has not been mentioned. Will have a good look in the manual tonight and see if anyone has opened one up to see if it can be updated. Also the USA version has a Nvidia GPU, so there is a good chance it can be updated and I doubt Samsung are making motherboards with the graphics intergrated. Need someone brave enough to open up their brand new laptop to be 100% sure.

I'm really tempted to get one of these. Could any of you guys tell me how quiet/noisy the latop is when doing light stuff like surfing the net, when doing semi demanding tasks like encoding video and ofcourse when doing very demanding stuff like gaming. Recently bought and sent back a Dell XPS15 due to the annoying fans that were very obtrusive even when just surfing. Any info/opinions greatly appreciated.

Heh, well like I said the highest integrated one was by asus is the GTX560m (they make motherboards obviously).

Once you hit highend:

1) You may have to add layers to the entire board for the graphics area.
2) Designing PCBs for high end GDDR5 and 75-100W GPUs is not cheap.
3) Failure of anything becomes very expensive.

So I would be surprised if it is not.
