Latest England squad

They can play together if theres a gameplan, atm clueless Mclaren has them both trying to play the same role, obviously that's never going to work.

If Gerrard played a deeper role like he used to do for England many moons ago there really shouldn't be a problem. They actually used to play OK together around 2004 or so.
 
They didn't play well together under Eriksson either.

I have never seen those 2 play well in the same team. It just doesn't happen. Neither are defensive, and both always go for the killer pass every time.
 
Is Dean Ashton injured or something?

Seeing as he is the only other footballing striker available should he be fit.

I cant be doing with this anymore its just, as Gilly says, mental, from the selection of the squad to the team he picks, to the way they play its just so bloody stupid it beggers belief.

We pick 2 keepers who cant keep goal, 4 of the 8 defenders come from some of the leakiest defences in the league, we have a right midfielder who doesnt even play competative football anymore, a central midfielder who does nothing in an england shirt when ever he plays, a left winger who cant run, pass, cross tackle or shoot and the 5 strikers have something like 11 coals between them this season.

No he's a clown.
Doesnt matter how could he is in patches in the league, he has proved time and time and time again he cannot be relied upon in international football to even do the simplest things and certainly not a man you want between the sticks in a must win game because he hasnt got any bottle.

Its why for the best part of his twenty year career he has plied his trade at nothing, going nowhere clubs.
 
i think this is the time to bed carson in - he will not let you down in the immediate future and will go on to become a top keeper, if he already isn't. he is playing well and looking beyond his saves/goals conceded he has all the attributes of a decent keeper. he is quite a commanding presence and a good shot stopper.

although it seems he will be villa bound long term i do think he is worthy of arsenal. liverpool will only see because he will not overtake reina, although i don't think there is that much between them. much better than foster in my opinion.
 
I love the way Stewy Downing gets slated by England fans :)

Im a Boro fan and im not happy about his recent performances (especially against Man U & he didnt even bother against Spurs) But still why shouldnt he be picked in the Squad. Im not saying he deserves to start because Joe Cole is more technically gifted that Stewy is and can pull something special off if needed. But who else would you put in there, id like to know. I cant think of another left winger England could call up, look at all the crap we have had out on the left wing before now. I think I can honestly say if Downing joined someone like spurs when they were interested he wouldnt get the slating that he does from the media and most England fans.

Also stats from this season:

Stew Downing - 3goals - 0assists (was suprised by this)
Joe Cole - 1goal - 0assists

Other than that, im not suprised by his squad selection never really changes, I hope he doesnt play Lescott though he is not a left back, the only real reason he has been called up is because he has got a few goals. Ive never really rated him as a top defender. Shorey HAS to play ahead of him.

Also id have to say its who partners Barry in the middle, either Gerrard or Lampard. From recent performances in the league Lampard deserves it, plus be nice to see how Lampard does with someone like Barry along side him.

because even when hes not on form he plays better. hes also showing those signs of life again. dropping gerrard from a team within recent years is the craziest thing iv ever heard of. you.are.mad

crouch is looking ok, and defoe without games is always going to be better than smith. why not blood a few u21s instead of naming has-beens?
ashley young better start, hes going to be a major player in the senior squad someday

Because it's been proven time and time again that Gerrard and Lampard can't play together, whether this is the fault of the players or the management is irrelevant because it's true.

you'v misunderstood me, im saying id pick gerrard over lampard every time. I know they dont function very well together.
Iv watched a few chelsea games as of late, im wondering why someone has suggested lampard is in form?? im not much of a fan of his, but saying hes in form is basically an insult to the bloke, hes much better in form than hes playing now.

He wouldn't get slated if he wasn't ****.

It's pointless him being called up, when you have the likes of Cole, and Young miles ahead of him in the pecking order. ( Or at least should be )

I'd rather the place go to someone that actually might do something if he gets the chance to come on.

I didnt actually realise that Young was a left winger till I was speaking to a Villa fan at work who said he is better on the left. He is going to be some player for England.

But really how can you call Downing **** he does under perform but he has the ability to be a "decent" left winger, its his choice to use it or not. But if going by this seasons prem stats does this mean that Cole is **** also. Or just because he plays for a "big club" he is automatically a better player.

I still believe that if Downing played for a different club than Middlesbrough he woudnt get half the stick he does. But I guess every fan needs someone they can slate :)

Unfortunately thats the case. I remember after we signed Smith, he was in Englands first 11 for a bit straight away in the summer. And again when he came back from injury 6 months ago he was straight back in regardless of how well he played.

While Carrick played the Equador game for England in the world cup (whilst still at Tottenham) he did start to get more of a look in for a while when we signed him. Recently McClaren doesn't favour him though. Obviously, England need to have players who can do everything in midfield :)

Sure there's many more examples too. Although Carricks place was justified because he was playing well for us, he doesn't fit into Englands style of play though.

you'd think we'd adjust the style of play to suite the talent we have wouldnt you. heaven forbid we'd use our educated brains.

why compare downing to joe cole too, do you want to get absolutely slated?
its not all about assists and goals, cole brings so much more to a team. And if you had cole and downing in a team, who would a defender be told to mark as more of a priority? Nuff said. Cole brings so much more to a team by name alone, hes automatically going to have to have more attention from the oppositions defense which in turn opens up the midfielder wider for the likes of gerrard or lampard :)

So what if I get slated, all I said was why shudnt downing even be selected in the squad, I even said in my first post that Cole is the better technical player, but then went on to state this seasons stats so far. I dont think Cole brings much more in all honestly a few fancy step overs ok. Cole is a clever player and deserves to be at a club like Chelsea.

But why shudnt I compare them two. They seem to be the only two players who can play on the left wing for England. Until i found out that Young is a left winger, like I said I didnt know this until I was speaking to a Villa fan at work. Like I said again, Young will be a massive player for England, but he wont get a chance yet with Cole and Downing. Downing will get picked because McLaren likes him, managed him etc, but he also deserves to be in the squad.

But what would happen if Young came in and had a bad game, he would get booed possibly? Do you wonder what it does to these players morale when they get selected for a England squad, something that they are no doubt proud about and then when they walk on the pitch or get the ball they are booed by various imbeciles in the crowd.

But I mean I openly critise Downing's performances because Boro fans know he can do better than what he shows, but for him to be booed and slated for getting called up (doesnt mean he is going to start) I find absolutely ridiculous.
