Latest England squad

downing is just not good enough for international. wright-phillips is a more feasable option, he has the pace to beat people and has looked ok for england already, but young is by far the best left winger we have, joe cole aside.

i dont think england are going to the euro sorry to say that but they dont deserve especially with smith in the team lol

I reckon somethings going on behind the scenes.

Ferdinand - Suspended (although this obviously wasn't planned)
Rooney - Injured, how quick will he return after the international break?
Hargreaves - Suddenly having knee problems again despite playing a few games recently
Carrick - Not even in the squad
Neville - Comeback constantly being delayed, and is conveniently looking to return after the international break

Not complaining, just seems all too convenient :)

McClaren's named the side for the Austria game:

Carson
Richards Campbell Lescott Bridge
Beckham Gerrard Lampard Cole
Owen Crouch

At last he's seen sence and brought in Carson, hopefully this isn't just to give him a game and he can establish himself in the side as he's been easily better than Robinson and James for a while now. Harsh on Barry but Gerrard and Lampard have been in good form as of late, no suprise with SWP, he's been a huge let down since breaking onto the scene with City.

Wouldn't surprise me if a key player (e.g. Campbell or Owen) gets injured, which would raise more questions about the logic of playing a friendly so close to a crucial qualifier.

McClown has already said that he knows his 'keeper for the Croatia game so it does mean that Carson is just getting a taste unfortunately.
Anyone who's seen Lampard play his last 3 club games will be delighted that he's starting, he's been phenomenal and as such it would be a crime to leave him out.
I haven't seen enough of Gerrard's recent performances to say whether he deserves a place above Barry too, that's assuming you subscribe to the 'can't play the 2 together' school, which I don't.
It's also another opportunity for Bridge to prove on the biggest stage that he's currently ahead of Cole in the best English LB stakes.
I'm quite looking forward to Owen and Crouch playing together as the pair of them are full of goals at international level:)

Wembley will be an interesting place on Wednesday night if Israel lose on Saturday.

The midfield looked to have a good balance about it with Barry in it.
I would start with either Gerrard or Lampard with him and then change it around later if things are not going to plan.
Thing is, McClown hasn't really got a clue, so god only knows what sort of team he will send out.

what a Surprise, McClaren has waited for the chance to drop Gareth Barry - disgusting management.

As for Beckham, we know he is only after his 100th cap, so give it to him and be done - he will retire once he has it anyway.

Once again, it's the old boys club - well done McClaren, I hope we don't qualify, so you get the sack.

Sol Campbell..... oh deary me. The fact he's playing shows how desperately short on quality we are, injuries or not.

Glad Bridge is getting the nod though, hopefully he can put in a decent performance.

thank god i wont be watching it in the SU again..
Some annoying pompey scumbag was sat behind me last time going "BIG SOW CAMBWELL" repeatedly.. and half the time it was extremely unwarranted.
Needless to say the "they'll never score when sol is playing' quote came about 30seconds before BOOM BOOM .. hahaha. "theres only 1 jamie carragher!"

Glad to see carson+bridge too. Looks like a pretty weak team.. guess that whole foreign quota thing is hittin the fan at the right time.

Given that we don't need to push the game, I wouldn't mind seeing Barry replace Owen in midweek. Crouch up top with both Gerrard and Lampard given license to push forward and support him at every opportunity.

As for the keeper situation, Green looked out of his depth the last time I watched him play a full 90mins. Couldn't cope with crosses at all. Hopefully moving forward we should see Kirkland, Carson and possibly Foster wearing the jerseys.

Crouch up top with Gerrard supporting doesnt work for Liverpool, so i cant see it working for England.Id rather see Joe Cole in the hole tbh, with Young and SWP on the wings, and crouch or Defoe uptop.
