Lenovo x121e netbook

All sounds promising. Thanks again Scylos.

I've been looking into something else today. Capture One can use OpenCL to boost processing speed. I've tried to find info on the 2357m chip regarding this and dawn a blank.

Can anybody tell me whether the HD3000 graphics on this chip does support OpenCL? If it does, then it's a no-brainer for me.

The screen is basic because its a budget subnotebook. Its really really good value for the spec you get, its relatively well built. I'd love it if the TN 16:9 panel were replaced with a 16:10 IPS screen (There is room in the bezel), but that would cost a lot more. If you want the display choices - then the lenovo professional line (Eg x220) has the options - but you'll pay a lot more
The only way you'll get a screen significantly better on this budget is buying second hand.
Most people with an 11.6" screen aren't going to be doing colour critical work.

Oh no, don't give me wrong. I'm fully aware that the spec is top notch for the price. I'm just lamenting on the lack of option. If the IPS panel was there for an extra £50-60, I'd definately go for it. Other than that I agree, laptops are not for much work - not my kind of work anyway.

Doesn't come with a case but you can buy a sleeve case from Lenovo at the same time as purchasing the laptop.

Can get it here: http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...d=uk|cse|df|google|57Y4286&CAWELAID=458295950

I forgot so will probably order in the next week or so for mine. :)

Yup, ordered mine. Bare in mind it is just a neoprene slip case. It fits perfectly as you'd expect, but its only protection against scratches and scrapes.

Also bare in mind this comes from the UK by citylink on its own, so its a bit of a pain in the rear end as you've got to be home twice.

I bought my case from Misco, if I remember correctly it was cheaper (and no delivery charge for me as I was ordering something else too).

To be honest £10 for a neoprene slip case seems a bit much and in hindsight I wish I just ordered a generic one, the only reason to order the Lenovo case is for the thinkpad logo.

On a separate issue I ordered the AMD E350 version, reading through the posts here I wish I spent the extra £ and ordered the sandybridge version. It's not that I feel it is slow, more like I feel I missed out. I notice several people here recommend using a SSD drive, how much of a difference do you think it would make to the AMD version? I have never used an SSD before so I would appreciate any feedback.

Managed to get a TECH AIR TAZHE001 for £10. Ordered last night so should be here by the end of the week.

Also got a 2GB stick on the way to bring RAM up to 4GB in total. Was tempted to stick more in but decided it would be overkill for my needs.

I was in two minds whether to go for the Intel or AMD version but final cost tilted it to AMD. I had a budget (sub £300) and ultimately couldn't justify the extra for the Intel.

So I assume you went for the C-50 yes and not the E350? I am also on the hedge between the E350 and the Intel. I don't want to get the AMD which is my preference due to slightly less heat and more battery life and find that it is sluggish.

Sorry, I went for the E-350.

For my usage, I don't find it sluggish at all. I went for the HD upgrade at the time of order so no idea what it would feel like with the 5,400RPM HD. The most stressed the laptop gets is playing TF2. Apart from that, its general web browsing, office, and music multitasking.

I don't for example, browse whilst converting video/audio files in the background, etc. If I did, I wouldn't have purchased it in the first place and gone for something more powerful.

How did you get the E350 for sub £300? It starts at £400 on the website...

You select the C-50 model and then upgrade CPU to E-350 when customising. There was also 10% off code at the time and 7% Quidco cashback.

You lose:

Windows 7 Pro version (you get Home Premium instead)
4GB (you get 2GB but can be upgraded for £10 elsewhere)
6 Cell (But you can chose to upgrade from 3 to 6 cell during customisation for not a lot extra)

Ah cheeky, I like it.

As you mention, ram isn't a problem - I use linux so no windows at all would be preferable and the 6-cell doesn't come as standard with the others either so that's no different.

I might hold onto my horses and wait until another offer kicks in - I would hope to see a christmas discount code coming soon.

since we are posting,

AMD E350, 2GB RAM, 7200 HDD, 6 cell, a/b/g/n 2x2 wifi, 7 home premium

£311 delivered + quidco (there was a 10% going around at the time).

Some info regarding the E-450:

The E-450 replaces the E-350 and brings with it higher clock speeds. The two CPU cores see a mild increase from 1.6GHz to 1.65GHz, while the 80-core Radeon HD 6320 GPU creeps up from 492MHz to 508MHz. Neither sounds too impressive, but the E-450 has a new trick up its sleeve: AMD Turbo Core. Similar to Llano, if there's available TDP the GPU cores in the E-450 can turbo up to 600MHz. In GPU bound games the E-450 can be up to 22% faster than the E-350.

The E-450 also adds official DDR3-1333 support (up from 1066). When combined with the faster GPU you might see significantly better gaming performance out of the E-450. Don't expect to get anywhere near Llano's performance, but AMD notes a 36% increase in 3DMark Vantage performance.

Hi all,

I've been looking at Lenovo laptops for a few days now after seeing an S205 in.. PC WORLD! After then looking at my mates X220 I found the X121e somewhere in between.

I see lots about the poor trackpad on the X121e, the trackpad on the S205 is flat but obviously a slightly lower spec and not a nice looking thing either. Though, the S205 on the Lenovo site looks nicer than the one in PCW but it doesn't seem to be available?

Anyway, I'm looking at getting an X121e for under around £350. I'm thinking..

AMD (do I go for E-350 or C-50? Is the 450 coming out soon?)
6 Cell Battery
Standard 2gb RAM (then buy 8gb from crucial @ £40 delivered)
320gb 7200rpm (possibly upgrade to SSD in a few months)

Does this sound like a good buy? Can I get deals anywhere like codes or cashback or is quidco the best bet? Never used a site like this before.

Thanks in advance fellow X121e'ers!

Strange, The E-350 is a few quid cheaper than the C-50!

I'm not really willing to stretch the budget for the i3. It will only be used a few times a week for web work etc when out of the office, on holiday or for taking places to show videos and photos. I'm hoping the AMD will cope fine.

The i3 is £88 more, doesn't sound like much but its a fair amount on £300.

Thanks
