Lenovo x121e netbook

Strange, The E-350 is a few quid cheaper than the C-50!

I'm not really willing to stretch the budget for the i3. It will only be used a few times a week for web work etc when out of the office, on holiday or for taking places to show videos and photos. I'm hoping the AMD will cope fine.

The i3 is £88 more, doesn't sound like much but its a fair amount on £300.

Thanks

Your right there it a lot extra when it sounds like the AMD will be more than adequate for what yo want!

I'm going to make my mind up this week and either order this (intel) or a tablet, just can't make my mind up!!! I know that this is more powerful, probably more versatile with having Windows and good value but a nagging bit of thinks I'd prefer a tablet especially for the daily commute and to save me lugging around even a small personal laptop to go with the work one that I have to take too.

I thought about a tablet as they are similarly priced, but I really want the ability to do everything if I so wish. But this also worries me about the trackpad on the X121e as I do want to be able to use it as is without a mouse or anything!

I think from reading here that a lot of the touchpad issues are down to configuring, there was a post in here with some settings that someone changed which apparently made a big difference to the touchpad.

I like having the option to do everything I want with a netbook, but part of wonders if I;d be better off just having a Playbook or Android tablet to browse the web, watch movies and play with my photo's, that said I've got a lot of amazing older games I can play on a netbook, something that can't be said for either the Playbook or most of the Android tablets!

My mates X220 has a similar trackpad, the curved edge is the killer I think. The S205 doesn't have this. I'll pop round his now and have another go with it before I order!

Yeah I've read a lot of people moaning about it!!! I'm lucky in that I don't really use a trackpad much and if anything would use the "nipple" as a pointing device if I haven't got a mouse attached

Just to add to this, I absolutely hate the trackpad. I have tried every configuration to make it work for me but I just can't get on with it. I'm in the process of trainining myself to use the 'nipple'!

You will never look back!

Re.: Sleeves/cases, I've ordered this one from ebay:

I read somewhere that the Lenovo one has a zipper inside that may scratch the thing. It doesnt look like much, but I'll know in a few days.

Will update when it comes.

Re.: Trackpad, my best settings involve setting sensitivity to one notch before highest and getting rid of the following features:

Starting zone
Edge tap filtering
Gesture filtering
Scrolling region filtering.

I have the impresion that the settings are a copy-paste afair from a larger trackpad. This one is pretty small and heavily textured. At any rate, I only use it for the gestures (back/forward & zoom). Just try the trackpoint, you'll never look back!

3 weeks on, I still love this thing, the satisfaction I get from just looking at it is crazy! As I write down these words I am playing Star Wars:Empire at War, backing up on my NAS and listening to the Phantom Menace's soundtrack. Just Ace!

Glad to hear your happy with it!! Did you buy your x121 to replace something else?

The main thing concerning me about this machine is the 1.3ghz processor.

Is that really going to be fast enough for a smooth gliding experience throughout applications and files? Especially in say Microsoft Office.... I really don't want ANY slow ups as I'll be working at a fast pace doing loads of assignments for college and university!

I will be selecting 8gb of ram to go into this machine so that should definitely help with the resources of running the machine.

Anyone available for input?

PS:- FINALLY (2ND POINT)
Also as much as I want an SSD and money is no problem here, 128gb is FAR TO SMALL for a primary disk drive! I'm going with the 320gb HDD for now and will upgrade to SSD later when capacity goes up and price goes down a notch.

I've previously had an Intel Core 2 Duo 1.4 Ghz ULV processor and that flew, it felt as quick as my AMD quad core desktop, I'd imagine the i3 will be even better.

After passing on my white macbook to my wife, I just thought I should buy this instead of a macbook air (I have mainly owned Macs and a number of thinkpads in my computer life). Seeing that Lion is basically Apple's Vista and because as great as the MBA is, its not a laptop for the road. Imo a road-warrior lappy must be plastic i.e. hard wearing. Add to that the fact that 7 seem to work flawlessly - I decided I needed a Thinkpad again. My last Thinkpad was an X41.

I've had no issues with the matt finish, then again I am not a hooligan when it comes to handling tech.

The i3 is super sufficient for everything - on par with a previous generation i5 at least. The Intel graphics are meh, probably equivalent to an Nvidia 310M. It is certainly a bit less punchy than my wife's macbook's 320M but certainly a lot better than my iMac's 9400M. Having said that, it does depend on the game. Some games (mainly DirectX ones) are played better by the intel chipset. The OpenGL/CL ones are definitely handled better by Nvidia GPUs.

The best thing about the Intel graphics is that I don't get memory bottlenecks, so I don't get stutters or freezes under load. That's probably down to the ridiculous memory I got in (8GB) as it shares system memory (I think at the moment its up to 1.3 GB shared).

Don't worry, it won't stutter/crash/run out of resources on Word.

I'm no expert, but for the amount of money I spent on it, I am very very happy for all its shortcomings (screen-trackpad-slight noise).

How does this netbook differ from the Lenovo S205? The look the same spec except the x121 looks better but the S205 has a better webcam and is cheaper. Unless there's another significant difference I'm missing I think I might go for the S205 and save some money. Or would this be bad?

It does sound really good, I found a video on Youtube that showed the unit itself in terms of Length and Width wasn't all that much more than an iPad, of course the depth of the laptop is more but still looked very small!!

I received the sleeve today - quality is good with substantial padding (bearing in mind it cost me £6) but its a rather tight fit. Possibly the 13" would be a better fit. Maybe I'm spoiled from MB sleeves (which cost nearly always £40). Having said that I'm more than happy with it. The thinkpad logo in the front is as always all the money. Oh gawd, I'm such a sucker with branding sometimes.

At any rate, my briefcase does have a laptop compartment, I would be using the sleeve when its just the laptop I need, or when I carry too much paperwork in the samsonite. Will post some pics when I get the chance.

I'm not sure what the difference is but the Lenovo site wont let me look at the nicer one!

The TECH AIR TAZHE001 case I ordered just arrived at work. Can't comment on how the X121E fits but its a fantastic case for £10. Comes with shoulder strap and is padded.

Its actually more laptop bag than case.
