Is that article right in saying they've scrapped TouchID from behind the glass? So it will still have a ring sat 'inside' the glass screen?

Or have I misread it?

Indeed, it would be pretty interesting having to peer into your phone while holding over a contactless reader. I can think go a few retailers where this would make you look like a nut job. McDonalds drive through would be amusing.

I can't see them going for it, can you?

I'd be pretty annoyed to be honest, I have a few friends with facial recognition Android devices and it looks daft. I love the discreetness of Touch ID, it would be a major issue for me.

No idea. My 7 Plus is plenty fast enough on iOS11 (beta), the only reason I want to upgrade is the AMOLED screen as I'm a sucker for them. I think I'll be hard pushed to part with £900+ for an AMOLED phone if it doesn't support touch ID, so I can see me keeping hold of the 7 Plus if that is indeed the case.

If they do move to faceID (lol?) then I wonder if they will ever bring back touchID on the flag ship. They will need to present a strong case in the Apple Event as to why they are going with faceID instead of touchID, and by doing so they may not want to go "back" to touchID.

What they won't do is admit that putting touchID under the glass is difficult and so faceID is just an interim solution.

Are there any rumours that the 7s screen is going to be OLED as well?

From the rumours I've read, they've been able to make "FaceID" even faster at authenticating its user than TouchID can

I would think it'd need to be pretty damn good for it to replace TouchID.

Even if its instant, you would still need to do the awkward action of getting your face into frame while holding the phone over the payment terminal. Unless they allowed you to show your face and have 10s grace period to put it over a terminal.

There's also another rumour that the front camera will detect your face even when the phone isn't looking directly at you (I.e. if it's on a table), and even works in the dark.

With regards to Apple Pay using this technology, it'd actually probably be even better. Right now, you select your card, hold your thumb on the home button and then show your phone (or hold your thumb on the home button all whilst holding the phone over the reader). If the rumours are true, you'll be able to just select your card and then hold your phone over the reader.
