George Mewes or I J Mellis? Any preference?
Never been to either but need to get a nice roquefort for a present and a few for myself. Frustrating there's nothing more central/east.
I'll give you a slightly more reasoned response. I somehow ended up at 99p last night. Far to old for that nonsense!
Anyway, I've been to Mellis once before and it was really good. Staff were knowledgeable and happy to help and they were willing to give lots of free tasters. I can't remember what I bought in the end, but it was delicious and reasonably priced.
Mewes is the one on Byres Road eh? I didn't actually know it existed until my friend mentioned it last night in the pub. I'm rarely in that part of town. However, I've been recommended a coffee shop opposite it which I'm planning on going to later so will nip in and have a look at their wares.
I'll inquire about Roquefort for you, though I have the feeling that the shop will be eye wateringly expensive.
It does seem odd that there aren't more 'foodie' shops in the centre. Maybe a gap in the market? Oil & Vinegar is the only one that immediately springs to mind, and that hardly counts. Though, we are famous for not being a foodie city!
