LG discontinues Bluray and UHD players

Can’t really see this being a big problem. Very much doubt LG market share was worth while for them.

I originally had Sony x700 which I had issues with so upgraded to a Panasonic never looked back. The auto switching to DV/HDR was worth it alone never mind the bugs

If you are after a value player I believe Panasonic have recently came out with a DV capable player for sub 200 and then if want some more fancy then there is more bespoke brands.

There’s a couple of UK retailers have noted an increase in their 4k sales and there’s an ever increasing number of films hitting the market. It’s actually quite hard to keep up with just the films I like!

Edit: Saying that in the not to distant future I want to make a home media server and back up my collection!!

Thats the model I have and still going strong yet not used as much as it should.

The problem with this is the more the bigger players pull out of the market. The tooling themselves get destroyed/dismantled (I would hope for sold off but doubt it for the fear of fakes, very good fakes) and then leaving only the low quality parts being made, like the current portable cassette player market. All the new cassette market uses the same generic part from the same company, hence they are all very big. The tooling to make the really slim cassette player in the 90's are gone.
Tooling for a mechanical portable cassette player and a generic laser based disc player are miles apart in complexity.

Tooling for disc players are widespread and nothing special.

I see watched the recent YouTube video on the cassette subject.

Im not a fan of this move away from physical media maybe its my age but if its digital they could shut the server down at any point in the future and you no long have access to it.

That's why they say you can use them as decent Audio CD players. I think with video standards changing it's the encoders and such that will be an issue..

Noticing youtube is getting worse, 1 minute in and two ads, non skippable.

Did have vanced youtube but stopped working, not sure if they got it working again.
ReVanced (to patch the APK on android devices) or Smarttube app (standalone, pseudo-YT player) for android TV ;)

I am sick and tired of streaming now, what was meant as a convenient thing has now become an absolute PITA, you need 4-5 subs to get everything you need, and the amount of stuff you consume is not whole for all - so in effect you subsidise their existence by keeping it on a rolling basis. I am going to make an effort to cancel everything this year and focus on getting physical media for everything I really want. I think LG discontinuing is only a bad look for them as they make the best TVs in the industry, perhaps they knew they couldn't make high quality players and compete with Panasonic. Given the amount of focus on physical media with so many good blu-rays coming out, I hope Panasonic continue to develop and release more in the future.

Yup, we've cancelled all subscriptions, they are super annoying.
We do buy a single month every now and then, but noticed, such as netflix, they release a new series, over a few months, with gaps in-between. So we just wait even longer, until it's all out.
Our disc collection is growing and much prefer it.

What annoys me, especially with Amazon Prime, is a lot of stuff isn't even covered by the subscription and it's usually the rent/buy stuff you want to watch!

I'm sure I've also noticed that they sometimes split series and movie "box" sets between subscription and rent/buy, so they reel you in with the first movie or couple of series, then want to charge you for the sequels etc.

And then they had the cheek to introduce adverts!

Agree 100%.

We cancelled all our subscriptions and exclusively use Stremio with Real Debrid (about £28/year) - which has saved us a fortune across the various platforms.

By far the worst one is sky,
Pay about £75 per month so you can have sky movies and just about every decent new movie you want to watch you then find is not free but £13.99 on the sky store

Not a problem no one bought them and LG didn't exactly support them well, Sony and Panasonic now if either leaves then we have a problem and that's not happening so... tbh who cares?
