LG Flatron 29UM65-P (29") UltraWide Monitor Owners Thread

Looks like the 29EB53-B 29" is an end of life model and it's the last of the stock for sale?

I'm looking at 29UB65-P 29" http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MO-121-LG&groupid=17&catid=1120

So guys what are these 21:9, 29"'s like to live with on a daily basis? I'm torn between one of these and a 27" 144Hz 16:9

I bought my 21:9 29EB53-B LG 29" in June of this year after my 16:9 27" DGM got stolen.
Overall I regretted that choice. I have now gone back to a 1440p 27" AOC monitor and I am overall happy with that choice.

For me the Ultra Widescreen (UW) was first of all a little too big for my small desk but it severely lacked vertical space (VS). In fact my 24" Dell 16:9 2409w monitor has slightly more VS than the LG 21:9 did.

So even though it had been really nice to have two documents / photos or a web browser and a word doc opened side by side the lack of VS was a major issue for me.

Most games seemed fine, indeed playing Metro Redux has been really nice. Often games, in my experience, needed some adjustment / fixes / patches or utilities to get them to use the correct aspect ratio (but often with cut scenes and videos still in a 16:9 format) but it was ok(ish).

Dark Souls 2, not typical but caused some issues, would select the resolution fine but then place huge black bars either side of the game to use a 16:9 ratio.
You can use a utility to get around that and then it looks ok. But it stopped working after the latest patch but then they fixed that. However somewhere along the line an anti cheat thing (VACS IIRC) got utilised and it sees the utility for the UW screen fix as a cheat and thus an instant ban and so you need to remember to run Steam offline.
Other games that I have played have been fine and the wide peripheral type view has been really good. Again VS being a little lacking.

I would strongly suggest that anyone thinking about these 21:9 monitors to try and test them out as they can be a bit of a marmite format. For me and my needs, and expectations, it became more of an irritant as time passed.

The AOC Q2770PQU 27" WQHD Monitor has been a joy, although it did look a little square due to being used to the 21:9, and all the games etc are fine and my VS is superb.

VS was one of my biggest issues, but there were others. It might not seem much on paper but in actual use I found the VS to be lacking and much less when compared to the 27" 1440 monitor I'm now using.
I'm just suggesting that if those who are thinking about buying one have not tried one out first to do their best to do that before committing to the purchase.

For some it works out great but overall not for me.

your model have flicker free and reading mode?

Which model, the LG 21:9 that I no longer have or the AOC I have now got..?

As afr as flicker free is concerned if I hold up my phone camera to the AOC screen I see zero flickering, if that can be an indication...?

backlight bleed you noticed any?

Yes I did.
But the bigger concern was IPS glow. As you are not going to be perpendicular to the monitor across its entire width then the left and right corners are going to show that more.
The closer you sit the more that appears and goes, hence you know it is IPS glow and not bleed, when you move your head over that affected corner it all but disappears, if that makes sense.
IPS glow affects all IPS monitors, AFAIK, but I guess that it could be more noticeable on the 21:9 format over that of 16:9.

But also there was some back light bleed.

As I never used it to watch films, and in every day use the bleed was not really an issue for me. But to test for it on a black background and in the dark it was there. So a none issue in practical terms.

I suppose it also depends what you are coming from as well. I had my27" 1440p stolen and I was compelled to make a choice. And so coming from that I really missed the VS.
If I had have jumped straight from my oldish and tied 24" 1080p then it would not have been so noticeable, in regards to VS and much more pleasurable, in terms of being vibrant and bright etc.

Not sure if you want to read this but I have not had much luck / faith with LG and their customer services, that would also influence me and my next monitor choice.
