LG Flatron 29UM65-P (29") UltraWide Monitor Owners Thread

Flippin' typical that the same day I order my 29", the 34" comes back into stock! Have to keep telling myself that 500 notes and 34" is just too much on all account :D

OK, got my screen today and am using it now. I've not really done anything with it, all the settings are stock pretty much, though I have dropped the brightness down a little. What can I say, it's absolutely stunning and I wish I'd gone for this in the first place instead of going for a 32" first. Would have been nice if LG had included either a DVI-D or DP cable in the box though, I had to rush down town before the shops shut and grab a DP cable at the very painful price of £20 because that's the only one place I can get them!

That leads me onto the first of two hopefully simple questions...

My PC has an MSI GTX670 Card which has 2 x DVI, HDMI and DP. I don't recall ever being able to get a picture out of HDMI and yet according to MSI it's meant to be able to do it (why would it have the output if not?). I always just put it down to my TVs being too old but clearly this panel must be HDMI 1.4 mustn't it?? Is it possible I have a faulty graphics card? Pain in the whitest if I do given it's 2 years old.

Secondly, I've raised the stand a little (UB65 model) which by raising it firmly to eye level resolves any lack of height. Now it wobbles about a lot as I type and my desk is pretty solid!! I really don't want to bolt it to the wall as I only decorated in the summer and that wall took 6 coats of paint to look that way!!

Any suggestion on either of these things please?

Not 100% sure but I believe someone on here said it was HDMI 1.4 and yes it sounds like a fault with your GPU.

Not too sure about the second point since I have the UM65 model.

Damn, that doesn't sound good! Shall have to investigate.

Sadly, the awesomeness has subsided a little as I've discovered a stuck pixel. I'm running a pixel fixer on it but experience has told me that they generally rarely work :(

Not great to be honest with you. The glow is pretty prominent in the bottom left and visible in the bottom right and there is a bit of bleed along the top. I don't watch films on my PC though so to be honest I was just going to live with that. Especially given that my 6 year old Panasonic TV which was £1500 at the time is far worse so I've kind of just got used to accepting crap black as the way of life these days (until I look at my MacBook Air screen which is as black as could be!)

I guess I'm going to try and work with the dead pixel and see if I can ignore it. If not, I'll either RMA it under distance selling, or use it for my work laptop and just try again with something else for the main PC.

Feeling a little disheartened at the moment, just need to remind myself it's all only money.

Oh, PS: On the HDMI out, some slightly good news. Contacted the other retailer that was bought from and they said it had at least a 2 year warranty and have quickly diagnosed a faulty HDMI out from what I described. So that's being collected tomorrow and either replaced like for like if they have stock (they don't, I can see that) or credited. So that could actually end up being a nice result, apart from being without PC while it's off for investigation. Even if they do replace it like for like, that still suits me!

Since the same Vapor-X 290 that I have already is in the Black Friday sale for £234 (or even a Vapor-X 290X 8GB if pushing things for £350) I thought I just make sure that 1 card is enough to run 3 Dell 1920 x 1200 monitors and the LG29UB65-P together. Not sure if running in Eyefinity would put more strain on the GPU either to be honest, since never checked that myself.

Should hopefully have the monitor tomorrow but working day tomorrow and Friday so not sure if I get chance to run them and check things.

So, asking you guy that are more knowledgeable about these kind of things what your thoughts are ? 1 card enough or should I go SLI (or go with the 290X 8GB instead) ?

I wouldn't put up with bad backlight bleed/IPS glow. Take photos and post your issues here and see what Bailey says:

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/forumdisplay.php?f=116

If it is "bad" then Bailey should arrange for DPD to pick the monitor up and won't cost you anything.

Where abouts is the stuck pixel, if it isn't in the central area then personally it wouldn't bother me and I am 99% sure that ocuk/LG wouldn't consider it to be a fault either.

Good news about your GPU anyway :)

@TheSwede

If you are just going to be using the 1 monitor for gaming i.e. the LG 29" then your current 290 is enough imo, however, to run those 3 dell screens for gaming then you will need 2x290's. You will see far more benefit with 2x290's than 1x290 8GB

Thanks for your reply Nexus !

Well, the Dell(s) still going to be my main screen(s), the LG above them as movie and extra space when working on web site. Have a couple games that can be played in Eyefinity although for now playing CIV Beyond Earth so not done it for a while.. but if wanting Eyefinity one day a SLI combo would be best then ?? Would probably mean a new PSU since my present Corsair HX750 (bought August 2013) probably wont cut it for a SLI run ? (maybe the SuperFlower 850 if I need a new one and it be enough to run 2 290's ?)

Wont be ordering today anyway, since want to see if anything else coming up tomorrow evening that might be of interest for me. :)

Yup to run games on 3 1920x1200 screens, you will definitely want/need 2x290's

Although I would try to hold of for a bit longer tbh as we will have the next gen cards out sometime next year so have even better performance etc. + will reduce the prices of the current cards even more.

For 2x290's, you will definitely need a good quality 800+W PSU so superflower or EVGA g2 Supernova (superflower PSU just with EVGA branding)

So if I would stay of Eyefinity and just play on one screen like with the CIV game, and then wait until next year, you think a 290 Vapor-X might come around for less then £230 ? Maybe even sub 200 if lucky ? lol

And noted about the PSU, 800+ for 2x290's... :)

For that particular model, I can't say for sure but for 290's in general, I will be very surprised if we don't see them drop to <£200 when the 390/380 come about....

Saying that, the 290's atm are extremely good value especially the XFX one, £190 currently and once you sell the games on, it will reduce to about £130/140

I think I read before that you can crossfire different brands, you will need to post in the GPU section to check though.

HDMI etc. should work fine.

It is down to the game developers to support 21.9/2560x1080 so FC 4 doesn't have proper 21.9 aspect ratio support.

Hopefully flawless widescreen will update soon to support it:

http://www.flawlesswidescreen.org/

Thanks, also in regards to Movies can I just download movies as normal and then adjust the aspect ratio to 2:39:1 manually through VLC and it should adjust or are their certain types of Movie files I should be looking for?

Don't know about VLC but I imagine that it should automatically adjust the film to whatever aspect ratio it was shot in. Some films don't always go full screen i.e. have black bars all round so you will have to zoom in, at least this happens with MPC-HC which I highly recommend over VLC, follow this guide for the best quality/settings:

http://www.avsforum.com/forum/26-home-theater-computers/1357375-advanced-mpc-hc-setup-guide.html

Not all films are shot in 21.9 so you will have black bars at the side for those 16.9 films

As for certain film files to download, no, although sometimes there are 2 versions of one film i.e. imax and non imax, if you get imax version, those imax scenes will be 16.9 so the image will zoom in further.

Any idea when the 380/390 is due next year. out of curiosity ? Although since this Black Friday deal is until Tuesday morning I should have enough time to find out if my 290 can run all 4 monitors ok, otherwise I can order another one before the deal is over. Would be new PSU and some memory as well I think, to spicy up the inside of the case a tad more. :o
