LG Flatron 29UM65-P (29") UltraWide Monitor Owners Thread

You have three options for media playback with 16.9 content:

- keep it as it was intended so black bars at the side and it will be the exact same size as a 23" 1080P 16.9 display
- zoom in so you will lose some of the bottom and top of the video, I don't have any 16.9 films with subtitles to test this out but I think you should be fine, besides, you can always customise the subtitles...
- stretch the video so you don't lose any of the bottom and top (I def. would not recommend this as the image looks pretty stretched then)

I have tested the stretching method with subtitles on the godfather at 2:35:1, and it didn't effect the subs, although I didn't like the stretched effect, although with anime it doesn't bother me (I watched all of cowboy bebop stretched from 5:4 to 16:9) :)

I just wanted to jump in here and say how much I am loving my LG super wide monitor. I picked up mrk's LG 29EB93-P from the MM and absolutely love it, 21:9 is a revelation in itself never mind moving from an old hannsg hg281d 16:10 with its featureless TN panel.
Colours are fantastic though at first seemed almost washed out, now moving between the two the hannsg seems almost too saturated and IQ is poor now I can directly compare the two with little in the way of sharp image quality. It did take some getting used to the lack of vertical screen space compared to a 16:10 monitor but it is a price worth paying and easily corrected with the 34" model :D

The unit itself looks superb, very refined with its tiny lip and almost edge to edge screen effect, albeit a bit of a con when you fire it up and find the extra border hidden under the initially viewable yet almost faultless Anti glare layer.
The one visible panel at the bottom of the screen looks very sleek with its brushed aluminium effect finish and the touch sensitive button work an absoloute treat, far more refined than the clunky side mounted buttons on my old 28".

It feels hard to imagine moving back to a standard aspect ratio now having experienced this and I am pretty much set to pick up a 34" LG in the coming months to pair with the 29", doing away with the hanns g altogether and mounting the two 21:9's stacked.

I do experience a little ghosting but oddly much less so in fast FPS games, most noticeable is in Dayz epoch of all places and only when response time is on high, not an issue really as epoch is hardly fast paced so knocking the response time down to medium is not a problem and does away with the minimal ghosting.

All in all id say 21:9 is a winning formula my self, why it isn't more readily available I do not know as in games that support it you get a much more immersive experience and in a productive scenario you just have so much more functional space, I say functional because of the added width, vertical space is great and welcome too but stacking windows seems so counter intuitive compared to working with multiple horizontal windows IMO.

To sum up, glad to be in the club :D

Nice one kanifee! Welcome to the future (regarding aspect ratio :p)! :D

MRK certainly got a good screen with regards to zero back light bleed etc.! If I hadn't had my LG 29UM65, I was going to probably buy that one from mrk! :p Bonus that it is also pre-calibrated

I will hopefully be getting a LG calibrator soon so shall post a bit of an update on this monitor when calibrated :)

edit:

I have tested the stretching method with subtitles on the godfather at 2:35:1, and it didn't effect the subs, although I didn't like the stretched effect, although with anime it doesn't bother me (I watched all of cowboy bebop stretched from 5:4 to 16:9) :)

Yup stretched option looks very poor, zoom in with losing a bit of the top and bottom is much better

I agree with the aspect ratio... theres no way I could go back now after using a 21:9 Monitor. It just feels so much more natural and I love the wide view.
Nexus its definatly worth calibrating. I picked up the i1 display pro and have all 3 monitors in my house calibrated perfectly Even my 55 inch sony tv which took abit more effort but it looks amazing and when you think about the price it costs to have a professional calibrate it, its definatly worth it.

Yeah I won't be doing it any time soon now, that LG one won't work with these :(

Just can't justify £100+ on a calibrator, at least not yet....

I guess it depends how much you spend on TV's and monitors ect. Say if you spend £2000 on a tv... an extra £100-£200 to have the most accurate colours and greyscale ect in my opinion is worth it. plus your going to be able to calibrate every single monitor and tv you get in the future to perfect picture quality.
That's how I look at it anyway and when you think that it costs £200-£300 to have a professional come and calibrate your tv being able to do it yourself is so much better and cheaper.

I need an ssd in my desktop, it's so slow compared to my laptop :(

Also I think my psu might be causing my crashing problems and delayed bootup (PC turns on for a few seconds, then goes off, then boots properly)

Personally I wasn't blown away by SSD, it is fast but compared to the drive I was using before (samsung F3), it wasn't as quick as what people were making it out to be imo...

Main benefit of the SSD for me is the silence + not having to really worry if you drop it etc.! :D

You tried a bios reset?

Came across a pretty decent site for contrast setting so I have readjusted a few of my settings again, so they are now:

brightness - 12
contrast - 68
gamma - gamma 1
R - 50
G - 50
B - 53
eco - off
response time - medium (will probably set it back to high though)

I find 12 brightness is too dark for me :/

And I have tried to reset the bios, I think it's either my ram or my psu causing problems

And my desktop is really slow to boot up compared my laptop which has two ssds

I would prefer 15 but I sit pretty close to my screen and I'm on it a lot each day so find the 12 brightness "easier" on the eyes.

Tried running memtest?

hovering over the buy button on this moniter, need convinced........not by much.

1, forgetting the resolution jump will I see a vast difference in quality over my 9year old asus 1680x1050p tn panel.

2, will my 280x cope ok until I can xfire (possibly a few months away)

3, do you think it will go back down in price this week

4, would it be better than the aoc (I can get both delivered for the same price)

5, im not one to return many things, is the light bleed problem still on as many moniters.

thanks

I definitely want to pick up a calibrator, but I'm not really sure I want to pay around £100 for one :/

Should speak to Mrk and see if he's willing to allow us widescreen LG owners to borrow it for shipping!

Not noticed much difference and since I can't game, not too fussed!

DO IT!!!!!

Yes, you'll see a massive difference. The quality of the ips panel is stunning. Colours are so much nicer and not washed out in comparison.

I'm getting the same performance compared to my 24", don't expect it to be much different.

I think the LG is far superior and bleed it just pot luck. If you get it return it and ask in the CS about returning at their expense.

Do you all think we should ask this thread to be listed as 29" LG super-wide screen owners thread"? MOD should be able to change it :)

Either that or we set up a super widescreen owners thread for all of the monitors and have a list of what people have in the op, like the gsync owners thread and other ones like it :)

Would love to calibrate my display properly, and compare it to my w2363d which I'm probably gonna sell
