LG to Introduce 34-inch IPS 21:9 UltraWide (Model UM95) monitor

Well the LG one may be 10bit but it's sRGB so the benefits lie in both AOC and LG models over wide panels :p The upshot to the LG is increased gradient quality in subtle shifts. How much that matters to someone depends on the usage. Anyone editing photos all day will no doubt want that attribute but people watching movies, playing games and generally multitasking it won't matter a huge deal and they will likely benefit from the cost savings the AOC offers.

I have further updates from LG Germany, the stock info and numbers might be interesting for some I guess. The important part is the first line :D :D

Don’t worry you will get some additional gift from us as a compensation J

The product is on the way to our office, needs some time from Netherlands, then I check and send it out with the gift.

When we started showing the 34UM95 at CeBIT we had such a lot of inquiries for test that I ordered 5 units, but our sales sold them before I had the chance to check our warehouse.

Then I ordered another 10 units and the feedback from our Press was that amazing, even the www.prad.de portal awarded him with a very good. The backlog of the products, orders versus stock was 2800 units !!! so this product is a real “selfrunner” even for this high price.

Heinz is a photographer himself and has sent me some photos as we started chatting about cameras and things. A really cool and well travelled guy.

I know I've slated LG (although most of my gripe lies with LG's UK service centre as you all know!) for the way they've handled my case the past month+ but it's nice to know there are still people over there that do care and will go the extra mile.

LG need more people like Heinz :)

In a way I'm now glad the retailer didn't just direct swap and send me out a new one :p

Was the long wait tedious and wtf worthy? Yup for sure.

Was the outcome of that worth it? Certainly seems like it now!

IM happy that it seems to finaly work out for you. One question though. When you used the monitor at home did you ever get eye strain due to how wide the monitor was/is? Ive had the little brother(34um65) and my eyes tried to focus on the entire screen all the time and it gave me serious headaches.

No strain here. I'm used to a 27 and 24 in dual configuration so no problem focusing selectively on parts of the screen. My browser window usually dominates the left while other stuff like video windows and other apps on the middle and right.

What do you mean by this? I just spent the whole day editing photos haha.

AFAIK they're using the same panels, ie. 8bit+FRC to emulate 10bit.

In summary, the main differences between the AOC and the LG are: price, mount, no thunderbolt ports, no/different hardware LUT, thinner bezel, single speaker instead of dual?, no word on specific coating either?

I'll admit I don't know how the FRC works exactly but from my understanding based on what's been posted and experience using the LG panels but 10bit and 8bit is that the 34UM95 didn't exhibit any banding hints in some of my Lightroom photos that have shown gradient banding on other panels before such as the Dell U2412M/Y2713HM.

Strangely I haven't notice much if any banding on this 29" 29EB93 and this is just an 9bit panel. Perhaps newer panel tech is just better than previous generation.

AOC has managed to significantly improve the Mura uniformity issue; an effect that looks like clouds on dark screens of many monitors

Are they talking about IPS glow here or Backlight bleed?

If the quality is going to be pretty much the same as the LG, I don't need thunderbolt so it would make sense to wait for the AOC I guess.

By clouds I think they mean the paler IPS tinge effect that follows the screen as you move your person around the screen in a dark room with a dark image being displayed.

Head on there is no IPS glow or tinge effect but the moment you start moving around you will see it follow you.

If they've managed to minimise or remove that effect then that's a rather big selling point especially on a monitor this size.

mrk, please could you ask your LG contacts if the rumours about a firmware update for the 34UM95 are true and if it will be able to be applied directly by users?

Well here's the 3nd one,,
Light bleed in the same places as my first one!!

To mrk

Your desk mount that's the Ergotron MX?? whats that like for height with this monitor.
Have posted on the Ergotron forums should I get the LX or MX.
Their reply was

"Given the dimensions of the monitor, the MX won't work because the arm won't get the monitor up high enough. The LX LCD Arm, Tall Pole or the LX Sit-Stand Arm should meet your needs."

What I would like to do is have the monitor in three positions on the desk, left, center and right, of my seating position.

Looking at the MX I don't know if I can do that??
But the LX I might be able to, but they suggested the longer pole version to give more height, which costs a bit more and don't know if I need it.

I know you cannot comment on the LX but your opinions on the MX would be great.

Regards,

Martin
