This is interesting.

What is a belt change going to cost?

get the belt and water pump change for circa £250.00

the 1.4 16v is a hit and miss engine, you'll get one which runs like a dream but burns oil (like mine) or doesn't and i would look at it as a better alternative than a gti under these circumstances, unless she really is bothered about car park politics

Despite your complaints that the 1.8 20v is a pointless engine (I am not going to disagree with you, I don't like it either) you seem to run one v0n - what sort of realworld economy do you get?

The little indy garage across the way from me had a Mk4 GTi (might even be a turbo) up for sale at about the 2.5k mark.

All I know is it's a black 3 door - email me (in trust) if you want me to get more details for you (don't fancy giving away my address on here..) - can give it a quick once over if you like

You, or her? I'm sure she will be bothered if people are telling her how gash her car is. Which defeats the point of getting a GTI because of the badge.

But how would they know? They are all the same spec level, can tell unless you open the bonnet

I run turbo version, same as mk1 octy vRS. And oddly enough, I get 38-40mpg on motorway runs and 32 mpg on 50:50 town/A road commute from kent to West London through entire congestion charge zone.

If you want a cheap to run eurobox i would avoid the 1.8T even more than the 1.8 20v.

Having a turbo on the engine adds so many extra complications and costs for simple motoring its not worth it.

It might not be, I dont pay a huge amount of attention to the cars they've got - only when I have to shout at them because they've parked on my drive

1.8T is great. It's the Cupra/vRS engine dude.

I agree with Firestar as he is commenting on the cost front to maintain a high mileage 1.8T is not cheap due to timing belts etc the cam chain tensioner may need replaced and so on. This is why with the current ages of a MK4 Golf I recommended the V5 as it needs no timing belt changes and has little to go wrong.

I know mate i've got a 1.8T, but i wouldn't want a sub 2.5k 1.8t Golf.
Yeah... there is that. Although, not that I dare to suggest - 2.5k would probably buy a semi decent, relatively low mileage Octavia L&K on 03 plate... Xenons, leather plus that certain mini cab je ne sais quoi...

From the sounds of it, she would probably never want anything with "Skoda" written on the back!
