Like a Golf..

You sold a VTI-S for £2k?

Or do you just call it a VTI-s because thats what the log book says? ;)

I call it a VTI-S because the badge on the back says it's a VTI-S, the logbook says its a VTI-S, it has VTI-S stitched mats, it's pirates black and has the VTI-S kit - what exactly are you getting at?

£2k is/was what it is worth.

My lady

It's for my sister.

Whoopsee! Sorry! :p

But how would they know? They are all the same spec level, can tell unless you open the bonnet

I guess I thought the GTI badge on the back would be a bit of a give away.

Yesterday some one on another forum I frequent posted a link to a Bob Dylan Christmas song CD and now this ...the world is coming to an end I tell ya.

That engine is awful, avoid it, epic vw fail, it eats oil and falls to bits.
Look for pretty much any other engine apart from the 2.0 N/A which is pretty much the same.
Cruise is doable for £150 easily though.

What other engines are there?

1.4? Pathetic thing.
1.6? Chocolate gearbox.
1.8 20v?
2.0 8v? lol
2.3 V5? Rare is rocking horse stuff
1.9 TDI? DAGDAGDAGGDAG + £1000 per car more expensive.

The 1.8 20v are in Golf terms rare - it lasted about 18 months until the "rattly bag of bolts in a washing machine whilst drinking the oil" 2.0 got a reprieve from the OAP home in late 1999.

I'd take my chances on a 1.6. If it had a duff gearbox it will have gone by now, anything with the 16V engine (MY2001 onwards) should be fine. My 99 Bora 'box broke after 2 years 363 days and 23k.

'I've had a Ford, maybe something different now'

:/

Oh dear :( How about some sort of Seat? Guess that puts it back to cheap French/Spanish crap though. Hmm

Which is good then? If it means you could get a better spec for the price and have the same sort of reliability.. if the badge isn't a problem :)

Yeh a Leon's a good idea - but I dont think there's many about locally and it doesn't have a GTi badge on the back...

I just meant that it's not really french/spanish crap - its just a Spanish brand, otherwise its the same as a Golf/A3

I've some experience of the 1.8 20v lump in my mums A3. Ecconomy is poor in that she averages less than 30mpg, high 30's seem doable on a long run at decent motorway speeds though. It has an adequate amount of power and seems fairly quiet and refined.

The only Seat around is a 2000W Seat Toledo 1.9 TDI S in doom blue for £1495.

110 or 90? Dont think they put the 90 in the Toledo actually...

Might be worth a look - my old one was bullet proof, the engine was surprisingly good for what it was and was comfy/quiet/solid. An SE would be nicer though...

I'd love to try and push the idea of an Octavia but there is nothing for sale around here.

There are a few octavias within a 40 mile radius, not many, but a few.

How far are you willing to travel. Plymouth is a really poor place to car shop IME.

Peugeot 306 HDi ;)

EDIT - Ok, serious time. Why not replace the engine in the Mondeo? (I'm assuming this thread has come to life due to the cambelt tensioner rather rudely killing your old car)

1.6 is ok for plodding about town, never heard of gearbox issues and they're as cheap as chips.
1.8T is damn good, feels good man, feels good.
The TDI is fine, not agricultural like diesels of old, and not £1000 per car more expensive, less than that, you can pick up a high miler in budget. The 90bhp is pretty crap and the 1.9E diesel is like eating a pinecone, painful.

the petrol engine range apart from the 1.6, v's and the turbo are failure.

It is in all honesty a better engine than the rather pathetic numbers would suggest. It's no ball of fire, but it pulls well from nothing making driving very easy and relaxed and even my leadfoot can get a genuine 40mpg out of it in an Octavia Estate without really trying.
