Like a Golf..

Five pages of drivel about a Mk4 Golf......yet everyone slags off the Mk5 when its actually a decent car....

Anyways, why bother with a Golf when you can get an old shape A3? Looks better, better image, women love them and if you're shopping in Exeter, then that's 'middle class central' so you'd expect quite a few of them to knocking around. Same with Bristol. Suits your criteria perfectly.

Can easily pick up a 1.8 A3 for £2-2.5k or you're counting pennies *cough* *choke* a 110TDi.

Incidentally, no girly bird is going to drive around in a Prelude - too much of chest wig car, and no woman this side of 35 / a mother of 2 kids is going to knock around in a 740i. Passats, Boras and Toledos have no 'cred' which is one of the supposed criteria...

As Fox said I got a 1.8 20vt model for a smidge over 2k a few months ago (not under as Fox thought though). So far, so good. Lots of bits changed on it before I bought it (common niggles such as window regulators, rear bushes upgraded to powerflex ones, new engine mounts, polybush dog leg mount, other odds and sods) and some modifications (lowered, remap, tinted windows, Audi rimz y0! lol) and for the money I paid I think it was a good buy.

Fox is kinda right with handling not being brill (although it's plenty good/stable on winding country roads for me, pants at low speed chucking around mind), characterless sounding engine, not fast but not slow (but I'd not like one which is N/A really). But, solid cars.

All I've had go wrong on mine which stranded me a mile from home was the clutch pedal snapping. Replaced with mounting hardware and labour for £45. Pedal boxes aint prone for cracking, but the clutch pedals are prone for a small box section snapping off where the master cylinder rod sits.

Nothing else has really gone wrong. Back drivers caliper is sticking a bit, prone for them apparently. Got a few niggles with passenger side door module but doesn't affect my alarm or locks so I will leave it for now.

Not sure if this checklist is of use Fox? Something I collated when I was looking around but I'm n00b to mechanics!

Golf Check List

Pic of what just over 2k got me: Golf GTI 1.8 20vt

EDIT read something about cambelt costs... mines costing me £250 on the nose for cambelt kit, hydraulic tensioner which aint part of the kit, waterpump, aux belt, coolant... and labour to do the lot and a coolant flush. Not bad, parts are nudging 150.

Image. Supposedly. Audi 'quality' and 'branding' for the masses. More modern looking than the Golf and they look better in the metal especially in that mid blue colour.

Then again, loads of people think 'John and Edward' are best thing since sliced bread...

You know better than to be logical when it comes to women's choices.

I can't believe I've come in from a drunk night out and seeing Fox want a MK4 Golf GTI. It's the end of the world as we know it :(

Had a fair bit of experience with a 1.8 20v, Brother-in-law has run one for about 3 years now. He has not maintained it at all, and it is beginning to fall apart bodywork/interior/grearbox-wise, except for the engine which, pulls reasonably well, its around the 135bhp mark iirc?

How about a Honda Accord/Accord Hatchback? (the 2001ish model)

It will be more than enough for motorway work.

How about a Honda Accord.

It's a GIRL it's being bought for. ;)

Much as I like mine, it's not the sort of car you buy if you want a bit of street cred/are trying to make a style statement :D

I can't believe the amount of decent cars you can buy for such little money! A top spec 2003 Toledo V5 for less than 2 grand? Nice

the 1.820v non turbo is slow sounds raspy and uses quite a lot of fuel, i know this as a mate had an a3 in that config.

I suggest a mk4 golf GT TDI if going for that series, and take the tdi badge off. PD150 engine too :D

Thats the real issue, expecting to get a decent Golf for £2.5k is a problem, Fox needs to help steer in a reality check.

I sold my 1.8T for £2k and it was mint (not just good condition, I really mean mint (I have very high standards). Didn't have a stone chip, scratch, scuff anywhere and the interior literally was like new.)

Good condition cars are out there but I think Fox's location is the problem, not the lack of cars.
