Like a Golf..

I picked up this for well, well under your budget. Albeit I brought it back to Ireland and I had to pay more import taxes..

V5 170PS 20V
Sat nav, Cd changer, Climate, Electric Seats yada yada

Done 8k Miles in 3 months (now 120k miles) it only cost me 30 quid to service and a new tyre.

That is absolutely gorgeous. Id love to pick something like that up but alas there is nothing like it around.

And you wouldn't have to worry about retro fitting cruise, it comes standard ;) I traveled to the UK to get mine because for what I payed and traveled back I still saved thousands.

You may be able to get a nice one for around 2.5k IMO.

Otherwise, does a Honda Civic have similar levels of cred?

B5 passats look so dated and being a 99 it will have the old 10v V5 engine (150PS).

The old 10v can suffer very poor fuel economy IE sub 30mpg most of the time, where as the 20v 170PS will hit mid-high 30s on long runs

Wow, thats nice.

Whats the 2.3 V5 like for fuel economy?

not much different from the other petrol engines on a run, probably slightly worse around town, but not massively so.

Ewww? I thought you liked it....

Or was that a reaction to the thought of having to enter Torquay to look at a car?

I'm guessing it was his sister's reaction.

hand her a copy of autotrader and go 'find one yourself'....

then when she buys a complete nail, she'll listen to you next time :)
