List of Programs for which Quad Cores see REAL benifits

I wonder how many people who bought a Quad for future proofing will have their chip for more than 3 months? :D

That what i said the longer you keep it the better a quad will get and will say if you keeping it a long time the quad the way to go

Some very interesting points of view going here with this one. I am also in the same boat. I have been undecided on which way to go. The E6850 or the Q6600. I think I have more or less made my mind up and its looking like the E6850. I know I can overclock this baby to at least 3.6 GHZ (maybe more) on a good air setup.

I am about to totaly rebuild everything in my system, (in the next 2 weeks) and the E6850 I think will benefit my needs better. I play games and thats about all. FSX being the main one, so my thinking is I need as many GHZ as I can get and by overclocking the E6850 to high levels then I will see better results with FSX. I will also be buying Crysis too.

I do admit though the q6600 will have an advantage in other areas, but I am sure for games the E6850 overclocked will be better. Just my opinion of course. :)

3.6ghz quad is ample for games.

I doubt you will see any difference with a 6850 clocked to 4 ghz.

Plus you will be ready for up and coming games.

Depends how long you want to use the CPU for, I got the E6850 for short term, and I mean short, as above its at 3800mhz today on day 2 of build.

Been running a 6400 @ 3.8ghz for months.

The 6850 is overpriced for what it is..

Well my thinking is if I was to go ahead and get the E6850 and overclock it to 3.6GHZ or more, then this would last me quite some time for games at least. By then say 2 years or so, there will probably be something totaly new out anyway. So I am thinking take advantage of as many GHZ as I can before replacing it something totaly new in a few years time. FSX needs a mega CPU and does not rely on much from the graphics card as with most other games. Of course FSX is not only reason for a complete upgrade, my system is getting on a bit now. :)

The Q6600 will hold more value than a E6850 in the 2nd hand market so a short term 6850 is even more ridiculous imo when you consider the price of both new is equal. I can understand someone buying a 2140 for the time being as they are most likely best bang per buck and ideal for someone wanting to play the waiting game but the simple fact remains that both the q6600 and E6850 are the same price, clock within 200mhz of each other yet one has double the processing power, twice the cache, and better future proofing (if there is such a thing) - no-one has given any decent arguements as to why a 6850 is a better option - just folk justifying there purchase. I'll never have a go at someone for making a bad purchase but actually advising someone to make a bad purchase is plain wrong :( .

There is no reason with good components why a G0 quad can't run at 3.6ghz

My E6400 does 3.6 all day long & has been since day one. If your gona keep your new CPU for as long as two years get the Quad

Thanks guys, some valid points I must take on board. One thing that I keep hearing about though is this GO thing with the quads. I have been out of the scene for a long long time now and I have fallen behind a lot with stuff. Can someone please explain what this GO is ? Cheers :)

Its the new revision of the Q6600 chip.

B3 stepping
Thermal Design Power: 105W

G0 stepping
Thermal Design Power: 90W

The G0 needs less power, runs cooler so in theory should overclock better.

Early results look promising.

I'm not sure where this thread is going?

In one corner you have the E21XX series which is the budget king, when overclocked these things really fly.

In the other corner there is the Quad which is three/four times the cost and offers nothing killer over the much less expensive E21XX (except if you are a professional video editor or similar).

If its a debate of E6850 vs Q6600 then thats different. I still think Quad is 'very' premature though.

G0 is a stepping code of the chips that will be flavour of the month for August/Sept 2007, not that big a deal really but for people with older quads it will give them something to help relieve there boredom and earn them respect amoungst their virtual peers! ;) :p

It is a big deal if you have AIR cooling.

I suggest you do some more reading. ;)

Thanks for the GO explanation, that clears it up now. So in a nut shell you can get a Q6600 overclocking much faster on air because of the lower temprature with the Go stepping. Any idea when the GO versions are out ?

They should hit retail channels in the UK very soon.
