My house lay out probably has a lot to do with it, i have to walk past my parent's room to get to mine. Add that to a creaky staircase and 2 dogs that will bark regardless of what time you get home and it makes for a hard sneaky entrance. Plus the fact you don't drink means you can just drive home at the end of a night no matter where you end up.

OK, so what on this list is excessive? I'm worried about getting it in the car/in my room.

Full tower with 20" Widescreen and 7.1 speakers (biiiiig bass).
Laptop
Guitar
Amp for guitar
Fridge (Something like a 1.4cu Ft, will buy up there)
Set of weights

Is any of that overkill? I know 7.1 probably is, but I don't have anything smaller except for some small 2.0 speakers.

Also, when do I get my student loan in? Am I right in thinking that it's AFTER freshers?

I hope not

Some universities won't let you have fridges in your room so be careful when it's room check time if you get one.

I know people who took guitars but never played them because they just didn't have the time with all the socialising that goes on, same with weights. Depends how social you're planning on being when it comes to things like that.

Don't bother with weights, join the uni gym instead. It's like £40 for the year with the full use of everything. Plus a lot of girls go there, and usually the fit ones. :D

Fridge - in the cupboard for room check tbh ;)
Guitar - I'll always find SOME time,I've played it nearly every day for the last 2 years.
Weights - Again, just one set of dumbells will do, just for when I don't get time to go to the Gym.

I'm the kind of person that will get up at 7AM even after a massive night out, and head to the gym. I've lived with mates for about 2 years, and I always have time to myself on a Sunday morning, coz they're all still in bed :p

So I guess I'm asking - is it worth having your own fridge? I'll be in a flat, so would only have to share with 5 other people. But it would be nice to have chilled "beverages" aplenty.
And speakers - is 7.1 just going to be stupid?

EDIT: @raymond, sometimes I just can't be bothered to get to the Gym, and like to just lift a set of dumbells for 10 minutes. Gym membership is top priority, though.
The girls need someone to help them with all those heavy weights :p

Think it depends on the people you end up sharing with. I was really lucky and ended up with fantastic flatmates who never caused any problems with things in the fridge but you get people that aren't as lucky and end up putting stuff in the fridge to find it gone when they go to get it.

I always seemed to have enough taking up space in my room without adding a fridge to the list so I never bothered.

What block and what room? I was there 2 years ago, E Block, Flat 7, room 3.

Give you some tips,

1- don't bother stick posters up until AFTER the room check
2 - Hire fridges from the accomodation office ASAP, the fridge and Freezer in the Kitchen is TINY for 6 people
3 - There are 6 to a flat, and the doors are not sound proof, the walls are solid but others can hear you when you are with a girl if you know what i mean
4 - Always have lots of 20p for the washing machines, or you can pay more to get it done/folder/ironed at the union (just down the hill)
5 - Talking about that hill, you'll get used to it.
6 - Take the little plastic cover off light the sink, it makes the bathroom a LOT brigher
7 - The braw under you bed and the small cupboard can be locked, useful to put expensive items there when you go home for the holiday
8 - The post can be picked up at the accomodation office, there is a set openning hours. You need your student registration card to get the post
9 - Don't lose your keys, it's £50 for replacement
10 - Don't play with the fire distingisher, there are special cable tides on it, break it and you'll get fined
11 - CLOSE the kitchen door when you are cooking, as it WILL set off the smoke alarm
12 - Prepare for the 4am fire alarm drill about 2 months in
13 - The Warden (some indian guy) lives in F block, the one with a sky dish on the outside wall
14 - Get Parking permit/Swip card ASAP, you'll need one as there is a main gate with barriers.
15 - Cleaners comes EVERY weekday, and remember to wash up, they HATE it when the sink is blocked. And if they had to wash it, the ENTIRE flat gets fined £25 for cleaning charge
16 - Bring a SMALL padlock, you can lock your kitchen cupboard with it
Keep the nice food in your room, for one thing the fridge is tiny, so is the cupboard in the kitchen
17 - You can't stick posters outside your room door either, fire hazzard apparently. Same goes for walls in the kitchen, no posters....except on the pin board. IT SUCKS, I hate that rule.
18 - Get to know the wardens, they are a nice bunch of lads, say Hi to Chris from me :)
19 - There is a small uni shop, it shuts at 6:30 everyday thou, so if you want booze, get there early.
20 - Smiths (a pub under the union) does nice burgers.
21 - The local town is VERY small, so if you are used to city stuff then get prepared.
22 - There is a Tesco nearby, but you'll need a car
23 - If you don't have a car, every thursday, at 5, there is a bus service to ASDA, but there are usually PACKED with overseas students
24 - Or take a train to Pontypridd, its 3 mins and usually free as its so short the conductor don't check for tickets. There are WH Smith, Ice land, Somerfield, boots...etc there
25 - I'd usually go to Cardiff every weekend, and once in the week. It's a great city for shops and people are generally friendly. Train takes 20 mins, get a railcard. And get off a Queen Street station, NOT Central, Queen street is IN town. Last train back is at 11:30 ish, so after that you'll need a taxi. It's about £15 on the meter, but at 2am they usually charge a fix charge, NEVER pay over £25 for 4/5 people. Haggle, can get you down to £20.
27 - the uni shop takes card, min £5, the union bar only take cash, there are 2 cash points just outside the union.
28 - Hope you like Cheese music, because that's what the union plays. Except on Friday when it is indie night.

p.s. I am going to be there for Fresher's week to see friends, might catch you in the union. :)

If you want to know anymore, I am on MSN.

p.s. I think i've posted this earlier in the thread, but this is my room.

I lived in Glamorgan Court and our cleaner ended up getting fired because she used to do all the washing up in our block if there was any lying around, even just a glass would get cleaned by her :(

I loved staying in halls of residence, great time all round on the first night popped my head out the door after rigging up PC and making tea... bumped right into two pals from form class at High School... was a laugh then on in! :D

Actually met a girl in the halls, moved in with her only lasted 6 months though :p

The thing said GCE9, so im guessing block E flat 9 ;) Quite close to where you were :D

Added you on MSN, you can get me a drink at the Union if yoou want ;)

There is no Flat 9.....only 7 flats in E block.

The ground floor only has 1 flat as the ground slops up, so there are 7 flats. See where the people are ? They are the windows to the kitchen, and every window below it is another kitchen.

Haven't really read the thread, but some advice.

Deffo go into halls. Period

The people you meet in your flat/house in halls: Don't stick with them like a lost lamb. Don't think you have to live with them in the 2nd/3rd years.

^^ My biggest mistake

Indeed, I dont have that problem, my rooms are the same level as the front door :p

I'm not for one minute saying OMG LOLZ LIVING AT HOME IS SO MUCH BETTAR becuase it entirely depends on your circumstances, etc etc. I was just disagreeing with the statement that its always inferior - it isnt.

I disagree, having done both. hall life is clearly better!

If your circumstances allow you to move out, you would be mad not to.
