On the first point - I recommend you find a league to race in. Virtually all of the decent sims have several leagues. Sadly, there are still immature racers and 'wreckers'. It's not a really bad problem, but they exist entirely within the pick up style racing of open servers.
On your second point, Logi's pedals have usually been very shoddy. The DFP wheel itself is very well put together for the price. Mine is 2.5 years old and is working perfectly. The G25 pedals look to be a complete overhaul of their previous pedal design thinking, and the wheel looks even better than the DFP.
I go on several sim racing forums, and while you read about LOTS of pedal issues, Logi wheels seem to have minimal failings.
