Looking for a PC build please

Thanks Lee, but would there be a real benefit. I've been advised that CPU is king for my requirements (different thread, but user Panos provided the advice as he is into the same games) so not sure if I would gain from dropping back to 1700 even with the better board. Looks like RAM is a straight swap is that right?
If overclocking, would Heatsink fan be sufficient?

The R7 1700, 1700X and 1800X are all 8 core/16 thread cpu's. The main difference is the 1800X has a higher clock speed out of the box. The 1700 and 1700X can both be overclocked to more or less the same speed as the 1800X.

The cheaper Ram should hopefully run at 3200MHz as there have been a lot of AGESA Bios updates since Ryzen launched.

The Cryorig H7 is a very good cooler for the money. It will allow for a higher overclock than the stock cooler and you will get lower temps. You don't really need massive cooling power with Ryzen like you do with CoffeeLake.

Thanks Lee, sorry if I am being dim, but what benefit will the better board bring? is it that it is better support when overclocking? or something else?

Cheers

The ASRock has better VRM's than the B350 Gigabyte so yes it will be better for long term overclocking especially if you need to put more volts through it.

The Asus Prime X370 Pro as I mentioned above is also a very good board if you want to bring the price down a bit more.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £150.49 (includes shipping: £10.50)

If overclocking, the reason to go 1800x over the 1700 is because anecdotally, 1800x has better silicon.
Most 1700 will do 3.8, majority will do 3.9, few will do 4.0
Whereas 1800x, most will do 3.9, some will do 4.0, few will do 4.1
All about the #siliconlottery and how lucky you feel

With the release Ryzen+ now very near, I really wouldn't recommend buying 1st gen Ryzen right now. Price's have already been hinted at, and they aren't very far off the existing range (but will offer more performance).

Price creep incoming ;)

You think? haha we started with a R5 1600 / GTX 1060... we've crept £450 already so what is another £50 going to matter. To mitigate the "you spent how much on that PC?!!!" I've also got a holiday to pay for. So factoring that in, the price creep is crazy.

What are your thoughts on the board? Do you think it's worth the difference?

Thanks Lee

So what about sticking with the 1800X build from Tamzzy but swapping the board from B350 to X370 ? It's an extra £50 but would it make sense?

I personally don't think the 1800X is worth the extra money. Others might disagree though :) They are after all the same cpu. It is just the 1800X is a higher binned chip from the manufacturing process. The difference in a couple of hundred MHz in day to day usage isn't going to be noticeable anyway.

Also Southernorth makes a valid point if you are not in a hurry to buy as the Ryzen refresh is due pretty soon @orbitalwalsh can probably give you more info than me on that though as I haven't been keeping tabs on it.

Basically what southernorth said. If going 1800x with x370, better to wait and see what 2700x with x470 brings to the table.
B4B0 boards (the new budget enthusiasts board above the b350) are a few months away yet.

Definitely though that 2700x with x470 board gonna be at least £150 premium over 1800x with b350 board

gaming 3 got the solid rep here due to working and working well haha. That seems to be the key for any thing ryzen and why MSI didnt do so well on here this time around

From z370 to H370, vrm count isn't everything . As we can see B350 Strix can hit the same CPU overclock as it's expensive z370 ROG flagship counterpart .
My 1600 hits 3.95ghz on the Gaming 3 .

But ram should reach higher speeds on x370 .

B350 is for cheapness to get the Job done same as x370 . If you've rendering CPU for over 24 hours AVX2 instructions then yep, x370

But would personally wait for 2700x and x470 boards. b450 will take there time, shame as I'd grab a Bite chipset over X anyday of the week to save £100 to go on GPU or double the ram or speed :D

Wish I could state more on X470... But isnt to long till 13th to find out more leaks

Thanks to you all. I agree re the premium bit Tamzzy, I think we got into a convo 30/40 posts ago with Orbitalwalsh about the changes to 2600X/2700X bumping the price due to board change too.

Re timescales, I am in somewhat of a rush as I have toying with replacement PC idea for a while now and it looks like the 2600X may launch first (April 19th being mooted) but no news on 2700X yet. I guess it's the nature of technology these days, wait for 1 release and then the next release is announced. Therefore, unless someone tells me the board is rubbish or there's a compatibility issue, I might go with the X370 recommendation from Lee...

I can pick up a legit key for W10 for about £30 rather than the £105 USB option here.

Any dissenters? :D - seriously really appreciate everyone's time and effort with this. I still think I'd be looking at lower spec standard builds for twice the price otherwise!
