Lost my love of gaming :(

How far did you get?

In the Vatican City there is lots to do and explore, I’ve just left that area now.
Yeah still in the Vatican. I just find it a bit boring and not really sure what it’s supposed to be. It tries to be stealthy but the stealth mechanics are poor, the combat is poor and vertical exploration clunky. I think it would be better in third person and if it wasn’t Indy I wouldn’t give it a second look. It’s a shame as was hoping to love it. If it wasn’t on gamepass I would have bought it and likely would have persevered a bit more however I’m fully paid up on GP until some time in 2026 so the game doesn’t owe me anything and I’m unlikely to go back to it.
Having said that I did the same with space marine 2 and I did go out and buy that on launch day so maybe it’s a me thing.

I've treated myself to a new desk and a 48" LG B4 which has reignited my love for gaming at the moment.

I was a little skeptical getting the 48" as I also need to be able to work on it but it's turned out to be perfect. The ability to split my work tabs into 4 virtual screens is great.

Link to wallpaper?

:D

Not just you ... I bounced off SM2, too. And that's depsite being a huge WH40K fan. The gameplay was just very repetitive and clunky with a very short single player campaign. As for Indy, yeah ... I'd have preferred if it was in 3rd person. It's otherwise decent, but as you say the stealth/combat is a bit simplistic.

one thing i've been thinking about lately is just a total lack of good games that are worthy of becoming a classic. if you go to xbox and see top games, it's GTA5, minecraft, fornight.

how long ago did these games come out!

it's been 13 years+ since skyrim ffs and it's still essentially the best open world RPG out there

Yeah there is a distinct lack of originality or development in new ideas. I think publishers now just see more money in the content creation and selling than the 1-3 years game development cycle.

I agree with this. While I do think its partially down to maybe getting older and having other commitments, but the main reason for me is just the state of games these days and the feeling they bring.. They are ****. A lot of games are just about grabbing as much money from you as possible and the devs simply dont care. I know there are small indie games, but they can't really compete with the AAA games of the past that most people wanna play

Why do people want to play so called AAA games that are just about grabbing as much money from you as possible? That sounds to me more like an issue with the gamers than the devs as the devs are just providing games to sate demand.

There are literally thousands of indie and small studio games out there that are far, far superior to so called AAA games eg Space Marine 2 is one of the dullest games I’ve ever played. Nice graphics and not much else. Dave the Diver is far, far better. AAA needs to redefined as a fun to play game and not be a descriptor of a game with expensive graphics

While i agree about gamers are causing the demand and so would my most gamers i do feel we are being sold on what is meant to be 'AAA' titles. when in fact they are nothing of it or are littered with bugs which destroy the games reputation on release.

I always take the stance of waiting at a release now, i will never preorder a game anymore as there are always release issues.

I think we also need to redefine what a AAA game is because at the moment AAA games are defined as the cream of the crop, the very best that a gamer can play when in fact it’s more that they cost millions to make and that’s it. If you’re a gamer of any sort and you restrict yourself to so called AAA games then you’ll quickly become bored with gaming in general

I bought a Nintendo Switch a couple of years ago as well as Zelda BOTW but never had the urge to pick up and play it. I spent the vast majority of my time on the N64 and Snes games.

My 5 year old son has got into his Super Nintendo and really likes Zelda on it.

Dug out the switch and we have been playing together.

I have all 120 shrines, pretty much all armour upgraded and we are about to go do Gannon. I remember the reviews for this calling it best game of all time but it isn't even half the game Ocarina of Time was and I got to experience both in period which I guess the vast majority of reviewers who did Breath of the Wild never got to experience.

Breath of the wild has fun elements but the story is pretty basic and is essentially a grind fest and nothing more. I guess I prefer a more linear approach in that way as it just gives a better story.

Am I getting old and losing my love for gaming as BOTW is meant to be one of the best games of the past few years but I fail to see it.

That's funny, my 5 year old has just started watching me play through Link to the Past and I talk her through everything that's happening. I love it and so does she.

I gave my 5 year old my Snes mini as an introduction to gaming. He was absolutely mad about Super Metroid but none of his friends understand what he is talking about.

He can just about do the first bit of the game and get the morph ball but then hands it back because the enemies are too hard according to him. :D.

Now he is more into Zelda though and made a Hylian Shield out of Lego and sword and pretends to be Link :D.

Oh he's hooked!! I've just ordered a 8BitDo Lite (mini) controller as she struggles with the XBox Pad haha.

Mine loves playing Super Monkey Ball. No buttons extremely intuative and great leaning curve. Many Many tantrums though when that monkey falls off the edge.

I think botw reviews were based on more than just the game itself and I think rightly so. What that game represented is the direction the legend of zelda was going, and it was the one fans had wanted for a long time. Skyward sword was so childish for instance, which was the game that came before botw. The difference is huge and the future for zelda games is very exciting now. Totk was fantastic, only really held back by being set in the same place as botw. The next zelda, with an all new land, is going to sell massively

For me at least it felt like a poor man's world of warcraft in an offline mode. Wow came out 20 years ago though bare in mind but the grind felt very similar. Zelda BOTW is essentially a story for the first hour. Then do 4 divine beasts and go kill Ganon. You could most likely complete the game in about 4-5 hours. The rest is just filler grind. Even the temples were utterly boring and made water temple feel like top tier.

Maybe the younger generation are easily pleased or my expectations for games is old fashioned. I don't know.

The fighting mechanics and polish were top notch although games such as Metroid Prime have done it just as well and that game is almost a quarter of a century old now.

I guess this is where I come back to this thread. Maybe I just need to go back and look at the back catalogue of games I missed over the years as a lot of games now have a corporate way of thinking instead of making an interactive movie like I would expect from a game.

Have you tried mafia 1 remake? It's not as good as the first, but I found it itched my desire for that feeling the first game had, while not being out dated mechanics
