The system for LO is different from other RPGs, it will level you up when you need to be leveled up, you cant grind, except to learn skills. If 1 party member gets to say level 38 and other are at low 30s (happens late in disc 3, unavoidable), the game will level everyone else up once per battle, untill they are within 2 levels of the higher level team mate, then a rate of 50/100 exp untill they are level. When the game sees your level as adequate it will gain you exp at a rate of 3-5 per battle.
For the person having trouble with living ice, you need to use physical attacks, spells are pointless, just get everyone bar mack and whoever else has spirit magic in your team to cast zephyr(a) the spirit users except mack should cast powerus and speeda on mack (only needs to be done ones), preferably cast some shieldus and baracadus if you have them, normal shield of baracade is fine enouh though, this boss has approx 10k hp and mack with combo can deal 1400 damage per turn with powerus. This boss is quite managable.
