Louis Van Gone / Jose Mourinho set to be announced as Man Utd manager this week - BBC

To be fair, whilst Mourinho would get results, it's still not the type of football the fans would be looking for.

His teams score a lot of goals and play good football most of the time. He just changes it when he comes up against a team he doesn't think he can beat by playing pretty football.

I'm sure Arsenal fans are really glad that Wenger sticks to their tried and true tactics against the likes of Barca, Bayern and Madrid.

I can totally understand why a lot of Man U fans want rid of Van Gaal, but I'm surprised that so many of them are keen on Mourinho. Sure he is as likely to win things as almost anyone, but his style of football isn't exactly the polar opposite of what's on display now.

Anyone who thinks Moyes was better is either deluded or taking the mick. His teams looked completely clueless and showed absolutely no signs of improving. Moyes might well have ended up playing better football eventually, but at least LVG appears to have got the team mostly going in the right direction, albeit still a long way short of where it should be.

I think the utd board will be fools to let Mourinho slip through the net in favour of giving lvg another chance. I'd expect more of the same from lvg next year, imagine if Mourinho goes to another English club and does well? At this point utd fans want results over beautiful football.

If they don't appoint him in the summer and United carry on into next season like they have, he will not make it beyond Christmas.

Exactly, I don't think United fans would like to see United play the negative Jose style of football, although maybe they would be just happy of a win.

He wouldn't last beyond christmas and then we would naturally appoint Giggs until the end of the season and somehow convince ourselves that his **** management of the rest of the season is because he hasn't settled and needs more time. Queue another few years of crap under Giggs before we sack him and realise that we have become a solidly mid-table club.

We really are at a vital crossroads at the moment with our manager and if we don't get someone who can get us back to winning ways I fear for our short to medium term future.

I have to admit that I have hated watching us play under LvG. However in fairness we have been labouring for about 5 years. The team lost a lot when Ronaldo moved. Fergie's last title was unspectacular.

There is however some merit in Keeping LvG for another season. The squad still needs a lot of work and it would be better to allow LVG to perform this next season than leave it to a new manager. I think it probably will take another season to deal with some of the bad decisions.

Out need to go Fellaini, Carrick, Young, Valencia and probably Rooney.

In need to come an international class CB, GK and box to box CM. This is as a minimum.

Giving Louis another season might also see us bring on some of the younger talent that has done so credibly this season. Rashford, FosuMensah, Borthwick Jackson. I am not convinced about Lingard. Those young players are the only real positive about the last campaign.

If we bring in Mourinho the expectation will be that he will transform us quickly into title contenders. To do that he will only further a pragmatic, muscular style, provided by experienced imports. I don't think that's what the board or United supporters really want. What we want to see is progress and some decent football.

I never thought I would say it but I am edging towards keeping him for the remainder of his contract. At least then he will have nothing to lose and might take the odd risk.

So you think we should keep LvG but you also think we should sell most of the players that he thinks are first team starters. Ok.

Hasn't this season done anything to tarnish Mourinho's reputation? Why would you ManU fans want him after that? I think his aura as the "special one" is gone now, and clearly he's not got the midas touch after all. LVG at least doesn't seem to be a complete disgrace like Mourinho is :p Eye-gouging, etc...

Isn't LVG only staying for another season tops anyway? I think it would be mad to pass up Mourinho just to see LVG see out his contract and us to be left stuck without a manager next season anyway.

I think this is the key point, Mourinho won't wait and we can't wait, unless... Giggs. :o

I don't agree with the Jose appointment, I think he's toxic (although LvG is hardly Mr Media) however it does look like he's more in touch with the modern footballer and the game itself. Having said that, he doesn't have a history of promoting youth?

I'm torn.

There are glimmers of hope but I just don't think there is enough change in the performance level, the players look to be too constrained. With LvG only having a year left on his contract I don't think there's much point in keeping him but the club is in a tough position.

I've said it before... I think we should go for someone like Bilic. Obviously we won't and probably can't afford to, but still!

Give him another £200m to waste (look at how dire Memphis has been this season), or dont give him anything and Utd definitely wont make top 4 this time next year.

The board are looking for reasons NOT to fire LvG imo - the only problem is that (if the rumours are true) its going to cost at least £5m to fire LvG, and at least £5m to keep Mourinho waiting.

Even giving Giggs a season would be better for the club than letting the team rott for another season under LvG, and promoting him is probably a bigger risk than the toxicity of Mourinho

Depday is still young, he may come good next season, at least there is some potential shown.

You could blame some of the situation down to SAF who didn't leave a squad for the future.

The hesitance and indecision from the board is no doubt felt throughout the whole United organisation. I think the trouble starts at the top.

We could/should also go after Koeman, but again, we won't.
