Love steak - booked a table in Hawksmoor, London - anyone been there?

I want to go to Hawksmoor/Goodmans.

Stupid as I work in Liverpool St and bang next to Goodmans and near Spitalfields.

Need to sort that out!

BB x

Definitely go to the Hawksmoor by Spitalfields if you get the chance! If you get the time, you could always head over to the Guildhall restaurant for breakfast - it's overwhelming (no chance of getting any work done afterwards though :))

Bump!

Debating going to the Hawksmoor for mine and the girlfriends anniversary.. trying to justify the cost to her versus going to a 2 michelin starred place (set menu)...

Just wondering how big/costly the sharing steaks come at.. chateaubriand and porterhouse etc? in fact its a bit hard to judge the cost of any of the steaks? Your average bone in sirloin or ribeye seem to be around £30 on the menu. is that a fair guess or do they give you bigger cuts once you're there? We're not penny pinching as such but I think if we head upwards of £60-70 per head I might be in trouble.. but it does seem for that you could get cocktails, starters, steaks, sides, glass/bottle of wine with that..? For those that have been how much have you spent on the steak itself?

I went to the new Hawksmoor by Guildhall last night. Last year I went to the Spitalfields one and was very disappointed with the meat :(. Last night was so much better though :).
As well as what's on the menu, they have a board with details of bigger cuts of meat to share, although they don't actually have a board at Guildhall yet. There were two of us, and we shared 1Kg bone-in prime rib at £7 per 100g, triple cooked chips, beef dripping chips (fantastic!), cauliflower cheese, and onion rings. It was fantastic steak, the best I've had for quite a while. Including a £40 bottle of wine, it cost us £150 including service charge. Not too bad.
I absolutely love steak, and I could have easily eaten more last night, but comparing it (Hawksmoor) to The Ledbury or Le Gavroche (2 Michilin stars), it doesn't come close. The food at The Ledbury and Le Gavroche is simply stunning food, for not a huge amount more.

Absolutley this.

Thing is, you can have an AMAZING steak, but ultimately anyone with some skill, with the ability to source good beef, can recreate it at home.

A meal at any London 2* is basically going to be an experience you will never recreate at home without a HUGE amount of effort.

Steak restaurants are great for a night out with a group of friends, but for a special occasion you are better off elsewhere imo

I generally concur with the above. The elite steak restaurants of London are simply fantastic to visit again and again for a consistently great meal out where you want to eat a bit too much, drink a bit too much and have a good time with friends.

However, if you don't eat great steak regularly, whether that be because you can't cook or you can't source the meat, then somewhere like the Hawksmoor can be a great place to go for a special occasion. I took my best friend there for his 25th birthday, we had over 1 Kg of chateaubriand (between two!) and various sides and drinks, and it successfully completely changed his opinion of steak; he had never, ever, eaten meat as good as that. It was a memorable, life-changing and overall fantastic experience - and that's the whole point.

Agree, it's totally about what you're looking for from it really.

For all round best dining/food experience for me, it was the Ledbury. Simply amazing in every aspect. I didn't go out for a steak though, so you know.

I'd love to try the Ledbury bit their set deals don't seem to jave much choice. I just had a look at the Connaught. 2 starred set lunch, 3 courses for £42 inc 2 glasses of wine. What a great deal.. anyone been?

Whilst I enjoyed Hawksmoor in Spitalfields, I preferred my visit to Gaucho Tower Bridge.

Rather unsurprisngly, food is just as subjective as music, film and art.

You won't get much choice at any of the top places

The Connaught deal should be pretty good, read some reviews of it, but I can't see you having any more choice than at the ledbury, gavroche etc. it'll be 2-3 options per course tops on a set lunch deal.

I've got visitors down south in March and we're planning on a trip to Hawksmoor. I enjoyed it lots in December and can't wait to go again!

Also we're aiming to have lunch in Le Gavroche. Can't wait for that as well ;)

Hopefully not on the same day otherwise your stomach will have fun digesting all that food! :)

Whilst I haven't been to the hawksmoor yet, I have been to a fair few steakhouses and michelin starred restaurants, and I can't agree with more.

However, sometimes, it's just nice to let someone else do all the effort too! :D

I also just enjoy going out for a meal, even if it's just nando's! haha! :D

Had a date at the Spitalfields one on Wednesday night. Such a good wine list!

We initially ordered the Plum Belly Ribs to start, however changed our minds whilst the order was still being taken. They messed up and served them to us anyway - upon saying that we'd cancelled the ribs their reaction was "well, you might as well have them as they're already cooked - they're on the house!"

The service in their retaurants is superb. My mate took his girlfriend a few weeks back. They were early so had a drink at the bar, and the barman prepared a load of cocktails for them (without actually asking if they wanted them) and indicated that he was just trying a few new recipes out and they would be on the house.
