Love steak - booked a table in Hawksmoor, London - anyone been there?

I thought i should add my comments on the hawksmoor to the thread. I went to the Guildhall restaurant, and i can only say positive things:

Me and a friend shared an 800g Porterhouse and a 400g Ribeye both cooked medium rare and both were absolutely fantastic. The fillet side of the porterhouse was literally melt in the mouth, but if i had to choose i would say the rib eye was the better of the two. We had the stilton hollandaise and anchovy butter to go with them, again delicious but very very rich.

In terms of side orders, we had triple cooked chips, beef dripping chips, buttered brussells, macaroni cheese and onion rings. All were fantastic, but the stand out side were the brussells - absolutely delicious and something i shall be trying at home.

Dessert, the suet sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream, was delightful - i am a dessert man, so it really hit the spot. It was a perfect size portion as well, any more and it would have been too much because of how rich it was.

This was accompanied by the make your own manhattan cocktails, which were brilliant and added something to the experience. All the elements of the cocktail are served seperately and you make it yourself - a nice touch in my opinion.

The steak is relatively expensive, but you definitely get great food and service for the money.

Bill came to approximately £200 for the 2 of us including drinks and tip, we were expecting it to be more!

Highly recommended! :D

Also, if you like steak - try Goodmans as well. The burger there is out of this world! :)

Going to Hawksmoor Spitalfields next Friday. Really looking forward to it following all these great reviews.

Enjoy it mate, i've no doubt you will!

Another recommendation is the bone marrow starter which everyone raves about which i forgot to order when i went :(

I went to Hawksmoor seven dials last weekend, was very good, still short of the tsnadard of steakhouses in the US but as good as I have had over here

It's the beef & grilling that makes the American steakhouses better. Corn fed as opposed to grass and dry aged for the beef and they grill at a far higher temperature to get the 'crust' on the steak.

I've yet to eat a better piece of beef than the 16oz bone in Ribeye at Society Cafe in the Encore hotel, Las Vegas. Hawksmoor is darn good but you aint had steak until you have had an American steak.

Grass/grain - hmm, that's a lengthy one. But you can get USDA prime easily enough at Goodman.

Are you sure about the grill though? They use Josper at Hawksmoor & Goodman, I'm not sure you can grill much hotter than that?

Going here on Saturday, very excited to finally go but having never really eaten at a place like this or in London at all not sure how it all 'works' I'm probably going for a porterhouse, do I just tell them what weight I want or do they tell me what they have in? :D Probably worrying over nothing but I'm not savvy about these high quality places.

There should be a board with all the available cuts on, otherwise just ask. The Porterhouse there at medium-rare is wonderful, triple cooked chips, stilton hollandaise, creamed spinach and (if you're lucky) the braised cabbage and bacon!

I actually think it's somewhat overrated. Everyone rants and raves about it. Yes the food was nice. The wine list is dreadful really given the quality of what you're eating. The restaurant (7 dials branch) is really not very nice inside. It's just a big cavern with little to no atmosphere.

The steak was nice, the chips superb, but I'd not be so quick to rant and rave about it as many people I know do. I would go back. But I'd go back not expecting the huge things that people made me expect. It is somewhere that is quite expensive for what you have (especially the overpriced, average and limited wines).

I would give it 7/10.

Personally I loved it, thanks for the advice about the board, I had a 850g T-bone because all the porterhouse for lunch was gone sadly. It was all very brilliant sharing both types of chips and some sauces.

Glad you enjoyed it - 850g T-bone is a very decent-sized steak for one person.

Managed to get the half-price offer for their new Air Street restaurant which is soon to be opening. They sent round an email to subscribers offering them 50% off all food... and they seem to have quite a following. This is the email I received from them:

We’re sorry to say that the soft launch for Air Street is now fully booked. Last week we got 10,000 emails in a day and have been trying to get through them as quickly as possible. We sent the mailer at 11.04 and it turned out that unless people emailed with all the details requested by 11.08 they were unable to get one of the 3000 seats on offer. We’re very sorry if that wasn’t you.

Fortunately my flatmate was one of the lucky few, so have tomorrow booked off work and I'm going to stuff my face with seafood and steak! Then a wine tasting evening followed by Galvin La Chapelle on Thursday as a treat from a family member... think the weekend might have to be a little low key!

Grain fed steak eugh!

Go to Argentina, eat some pampas fed gorgeousness and never ever look on inferior USDA as good again!
