Luggage

All it had to do is make it from A to B. It mostly just sits around, what's the point!

The wheels dont fall off (like they did on my other cases) perfect cabin size, pretty light, handle is good. Generally well made.

Again, same about anything. A Ferrari gets you from A - B... so does a Micra

Seriously I bought my last flight bag from Ebay for... about a tenner.

Its not hard cased but it is 100% adequate and has wheels!!!
I agree with Nightfly, its too much of a fashion statement. The next ones im looking at are described as being some of the lightest made. Thats NOW far more important to me than brand names or whether it will survive a nuclear detonation at 6 feet.

Hold luggage is another story - I prefer to have some protection because it gets bounced about but hand luggage is never more than arms length from me.

I was boarding the plane once and watched as the luggage wagon sped along the apron to the aircraft. It turned the corner and I observed my own bag rolling off the trailer, get hit by the other carriages and skid across the concrete... The bag didnt even flinch at this. No marks on either bag or the contents.

The bag cost me circa £140 but it has outlasted several bags at £20-£30 my mate has bought and even if anything did eventually break on my bag, Eagle Creek will repair or replace the bag for as long as I own it.

Now you've sorted Fox out can somebody suggest how I can stop Mrs Dimple from being taken to the side and having all her luggage checked?
9 out of 10 times she will be stopped and I just know that when we go late July there will be a geek stall taking her phone & tablet apart and not just requesting they turn on.

Pics of Mrs Dimple? No pervo. If she is extremely attractive or suspicious looking then it might explain it. Or it's probably just an unlucky coincidence.

Buying cheap luggage is normally (but not always) false economy in my experience. Decent luggage also just makes for a much more pleasant journey, with handles that work properly, high quality zips that never get stuck or unstitched, convenient well thought out compartments, decent wheels that don't wobble when you're rushing to departures, and strong light materials that save your luggage allowance and are better able to resist damage.

If cheap ones work for you then great, but as with most things, if you can afford better then buy better.

Unfortunately some people are just always stopped no matter how they look etc .... my dad, who's in his 70s and looks very white English, is always stopped everywhere for some, unknown reason.

Personally I have a soft, wheeled with pull handle bag, branded Members which I got from a local shop which deals with overstock from the various big department stores. I've had it for 6 years and seems to be doing fine so far.

I really don’t have an awful lot of luck with luggage, I can’t remember the last time a piece of luggage of mine survived an entire trip without arriving back home broken. Almost always what happens is the slide out handle mechanism breaks – and either won’t retract, or won’t extend. I had to spend 30 minutes furiously smashing one against a hotel floor last year just to get the handle to close so I could get it on the plane.

Annoying.

So yet again it’s time to buy another one.

I either want:

a) Something sufficiently cheap that it can go in the bin when it breaks and I won’t be at all bothered as long as it survives 1 trip

b) Something decent that will last for a good amount of time before it breaks.

I’ve no idea what my budget is, how much I should spend, etc. I prefer the type of bag where it’s basically a large holdall with wheels and a hard base, if that makes sense. Needs to store enough general junk for a 2-3 week trip (Though I travel reasonably light and we tend to do laundry half way through so I don’t need an ISO shipping container, besides, the GF takes one of those and I can’t fit two in the boot of the rental car :D).

When browsing for this sort of stuff I have no idea what I’m looking for. Infact so far I’ve not been able to actually find the type of bag I’m after because I can’t even remember what it’s called :D

Any suggestions/recommendations etc?

Maybe that is your problem ie you buy cheap branded luggage that breaks easily. i have never had any of mine break and been traveling frequently long and short flights

What did you go with in the end Fox?

Fox won't have purchased anything yet, he loved his old luggage, sure it had covered some miles, but it was still in good condition, and still looked good for its age. He tried a newer luggage, it was smaller and more modern but it just didn't ride right on its wheels, it rattled and it's inside lining was just cheap. The old luggage isn't worth anything anyway so he'll probably keep it alongside the new luggage when he finally decides.

I have a large holdall type bag, work supplies them. Also have shoulder straps, probably the best bit of kit I've gotten from work.

Means I don't have to wheel it about, get off plane thrown on back and away I go. Seems to survive every trip I've made too :)

Definately not after a hard shell type case though - it'll need to be a canvas/nylon/whatever type as they are far more convenient and you never know when you might show up only to find the reserved car class is booked out and all they can offer you is something ridiculously impractical with a small boot :p

Do Samsonite do that type? Where is best to buy this sort of stuff?

When I buy luggage, I buy it from USA from Ross discount stores. Most Ross stores have a very large luggage section, stocked with a lot of Samsonite suitcases. The suitcases tend to have older designs from a year or two ago but they're still good. :) I've seen soft and hard Samsonite cases.

My most recent luggage purchases were two Samsonite 'Lite' 26" cases. These are the older brother of the B'Lite cases, I believe. http://www.samsonite.co.uk/b-lite-spinner-expandable-70cm-26inch/product-en.htm The cases that I got cost me about £50 each ($80) and come with a ten year global warranty. Most new Samsonite cases from the UK cost £100+.
