M1 accident

I had something happen similar two weeks ago on my way home from work, little old woman pulled onto a round about the wrong way on a NSL dual carridgeway. Luckily me and the guy next to me both saw it, stopped blocking traffic behind with hazzards on and gave her time to do a 3 point turn.

It's really odd when you see some one driving towards you in a situation like this, takes a second for you to register what's actually happening.

Rip for those killed :(

Wait so the OP link says the 87 year old was driving the van, in the right direction?

The BBC says the 87 year old was driving the wrong way?

Does anyone know which is correct?

Nope. |Depending which news site you go to, depends on which way its reported. I'm sure the police will know though.

Thankfully I work from home a few days a week and go in to the office when I need to, given I live near J25 I'm glad I decided to stay at home today! Looked horrific :(

Not wanting to get in the way of a nice sensationalist rant about elderly drivers:

Ban the under 50s!

Do those stats take into consideration that there are also less 80+ year olds driving, and perhaps the percentage per age group could be actually quite high?

I agree that challenging the sensationalist headlines is valiant, but also those stats don't REALLY prove anything.

For example if 100% of drivers in the 80 category crash, then whilst the total number in the 80 category is low, it still is 100% of people in that category.

Leicestershire Police have confirmed an 87 year old was driving a car which hit a van. They've not 100% confirmed which was going the wrong way but have said they had received reports of a car travelling the wrong way up the M1 which suggests the elderly driver was at fault.

Perhaps the highway authorities need to start fitting more prominent "wrong way" signage, similar to what you see in the USA protecting highway and freeway off ramps from wrong direction moves.

Might not have made a difference in this case or where the driver is suffering from a medical defect that they fail to see or disregard the signage, but worth a thought.

And RIP to those who died.

Very scary seeing a car or van coming at you the wrong way. Was in Harrow town centre few weeks back driving around a one way system with 2 lanes, turn a corner and bam a massive white van driving the wrong way, fast and on his phone. Luckily the ****** was in the lane to my right, had I not taken the left lane it would have been 100% head on collision, had my 7 yr old nephew in the car aswell, if I could have stopped that **** I would have broken is arms so he couldn't drive for a good while!

Absolute ****!

Half the country needs retesting, let alone over 70s.

The driving standards in this country are beyond a joke. The amount of near misses are unreal.

Atleast when you go to other countries, you expect to have a load of poor drivers around you but here, you expect people follow the rules. But it just doesn't occur.

And let's not get me started about people on their phones, middle lane ****** and idiots who don't know how to drive round a roundabout.

True and idiots like my old boss who drive regularly down the M1 at speed over 150mph and then complains like **** when he has to break for people doing 90 in the fast lane.

The only saving grave is he refuses to wear a seat belt so one day he will be a gonna, just hope he doesnt take anybody out.

+1.

The worst are the arrogant "I'm the best driver in the world and Nigel Mansell was a so-so driver" people who happen to be middle-aged....

I remember last summer there was a story of an old boy driving the wrong way down the motorway. The cops had managed to stop traffic and there was a traffic car further on up the road and they put their car into his path to stop him. Pretty ballsy move.

Possibly this one:

+1 THIS

They should retest everybody when they have to renew their photo-card licenses (should include a basic medical & eyesight test)

I get so bored of people who passed their driving test decades ago (or even last month) and are downright dangerous out on the road

It's normally either old age or foreigners.

Not always:
BBC News said:
Anthony West, 32, from Launceston, was travelling the wrong way up the southbound carriageway of the A30 near Launceston in November 2002, when he hit another vehicle.

Kerry Louise Richardson, 20, a Royal Air Force police dog handler, was killed while returning to her base at RAF St Mawgan.
