M140i, Golf R, S3 - Anything else to look at?

What the MX5 does as well as virtually any of the finest sports cars is, with the right set up, have fantastic steering, fantastic braking (feel, retardation and lack of fade) and a fantastic gearbox. What it does less well is go, sound nice, deal with the fact it has no roof or excite when the road opens out. I love the MX5, but a Boxster does all the things an MX5 does well and the bits it doesn't, well.

The MX-5 also does cheap to buy, run, maintain and they last forever :D

They are quick if you strap a supercharger to them as well!

I have to say that despite your opinion i think the a45 and cla45 sound absolutely gash.
More impressed by the noise of my mates 3 cylinder fiesta!

I have to agree. They're AMG's worst sounding engines. However, the straight six in the 135/140i and RS3 sound glorious.

Well it's won "an" international engine of the year award for 3 years straight (which is better than the 6.2 V8 ever did), so it's hardly a bad engine.

Also, the BMW sounds lacklustre as it has a very uninspired exhaust fitted from the factory.

This thread is hilarious, spot the fan boy!

Also looking it didn't win. It actually got fewer points than the fiesta i pointed out!

lol, objecting when someone says a product is poor, when it wins annual awards for being the best in class is now being a fan boy?

If 86 is your year of birth, you sound extremely immature. Not to mention how daft you sound stating that a 3 cylinder Fiesta sounds better.

Engines with an odd number of cylinders actually do sound good. The 5 pot in the old Focus ST sounded way better than the 4 in the current one for example :)

Not a massive fan of the interior on the A45 when i tested it so bloody quick just wasn't a great place to be in interior wise, my own option of course the new c class the dealer struck me in after was a lot lot better if that interior was in the a class i would have had one instead of the Audi at the time this was a year ago so the facelift might be better but i can't see how they fixed that utterly horrible stuck on screen which the c class suffers from too.

I have got an S3 saloon on order yes, it's due to begin build on the 3rd of October.

I drove the Golf R, the S3 and an M135i (couldn't find an M140i to test, but they are similar enough). The Golf R made a lovely noise, but I found the infotainment, perceived interior quality and even the interior styling to be a bit of a let down coming from my A4, for all intents and purposes it felt almost identical to drive to the S3, if a little more road noise (probably less sound insulation). The M135i was only really driven out of curiosity, I couldn't see myself in one (didn't want a hatch, I'd have gone for a Golf R estate had I gone that route), the power delivery was great, the interior looked ok, but felt a bit cheap on things like the harder plastics (eg stalks) and was already creaking like a good-un. There's no denying that it felt more balanced and poised, and would make for a better trackday car, but as a daily I never felt like it was as confidence inspiring to "push-on" with compared to the R and S3.

Nothing else really appealed, didn't want a Ford, didn't want a Honda, didn't see the point in trying the Leon after already thinking the Golf was a bit pokey in places.

Thanks, my local BMW dealership actually have an M140i coming in this week - so should be able to test drive it next week hopefully.

I've had a very quick go in a Golf R before I got the Focus, so I've got an idea what it's like. For some reason I'm not too enamoured on the Golf - although if I did go that way I'd go for the estate I think.

My Focus sounds crap, like a computer game when driving 'hard' and like a diesel on idle.

You asserted it won international engine of the year. It didn't. I'll state again, it was beaten by a three cylinder engine found in a fiesta.
You're letting your bias show and are having to resort to petty attempts at insults when someone doesn't agree with your opinion.

To be fair things became hilarious the moment someone mentioned Porsches...

I hear the newest Megane is good fun, not sure what its bhp is though? Might be a bit too 'French' though. Could consider an Astra VXR too. Although personally I wouldn't like either over anything you've already listed :p

Both only 3 doors, I would actually consider a Megane I do like french hatches as long as they're cheap :p

I looks very much like we are talking cross-purposes...

It won in the 1.8 to 2.0 litre class at the International Engine of the Year awards. Not in the "International Engine of the year" category.

Much like the Audi 5 Cylinder winning in the 2.0 to 2.5l category. They're brilliant engines by any measure.

My point stands, it cannot be claimed to be a poor engine.

If you're going to insist on making absurd, baseless statements then it also stands that you need to be less immature. It's nothing to do with disagreeing, it's to do with you making claims that are preposterous.

I'm pretty sure the last megane actually came third out of the current crop of hot hatches in the autotrader test.

Rs was first, followed by the a45.

Pretty sure the rs3 came last...

It was something like that, I believe it was the new Focus RS that won though. The Megane only came third above the Leon Cupra because it was a 'Megane'. As a bit of a Seat fan I was not amused :p
