M5 SMG Transmission

Really? Not from what I've read about them, but that was my initial thoughts whilst thinking the M5 was reliable, however I was soon enlightened by you guys and a bit of googling. I do think the 911 is more expensive to keep running though, servicing costs, tyres, problems all seem to be higher.

Nope servicing is probably cheaper, tyres the same money, the Porsche will use half the petrol ish and they are just as reliable.

With the dreaded OPC warranty i keep banging on about you have peace of mind.

I would give them another look.

...things just got interesting ;) Cheers DiamondMark.

It was the initial purchase price of a 997 which pushed me away as the 996 was too snug, but as I've looked at more and more cars my budget just kept increasing anyway so I may have to take another look.

Edit: Then again you get more practicality for an M5... Fox is right though, I don't know exactly what I want (but it's definitely not bling)

M5 is so far different from a 911 though, surely you have a better idea than that? M3 would be closer to 911, cheaper (in almost every way) than the M5 and a bit sportier. An E90 M3 is a similar price to buy as the M5 but noticeably cheaper to run.

RE: the M5 from the salvage guy... "A bird in hand is worth two in a bush"... is it really worth saving a bit of money now to have to spend a lot later to fix it?

The 911 has always been a dream, but the decision of an M5 progressed over time after varying my choices. It went from a faster 6 series, to a nicer, newer version of my 3 series but as that turned out to feel too slow and not much fun the decision rose to something faster and eventually I test drove an Evo and realised I could have the practicality of a saloon with mind blowing performance... and then that progressed into the M5.

I'm saying 911 for obvious reasons. :D
Ive just got back in after a late night drive, and lets just say a 911 feels like no other car to drive, will certainly take some learning. :)

Another perspective,

For the first 3 years of my M5 it lost £1000 a month in depreciation both in my ownership as well as the previous owner. £38k in about 34 months! Although that was sold at the end of 2008, so pretty much the worst time for the higher end market.

Even now they must be losing in the region of £500 a month, so £2k saved buys 4 months depreciation, is it really worth hedging your bets when figures like that are already involved?

Stupid people dont last a week in that business Gibbo, he aint selling it due to lack of money, hes selling cos he has smoked it about for 2 years, spent **** all on it and now wants shot, iv got a dozen semi mates in that sort of business do exactly that from everything up to 50k Bentleys, they dont give a toss till its ready to sell, then find someone like our man here looking for a bargain.

This is the crux of it, i know the type well, as i am that sort of type too. I find it hard to see how the OP cannot see right through this deal, it is a completely transparent situation. The clues are all there for the rest of us to see.

I can confirm that Jez is at least that sly, if not more.

NVP, what are your total cost of ownership numbers for this salvage car versus a BMW AUC car? I expect you will be massively surprised how close (and high) they are once you've paid for an inspection and warranty, plus the fact that the difference in purchase price is only a little more depreciation.

Nope, after a weekend to think through my impulse I decided to quietly heed your advice :) (yeah I know, leave it out :p)

Found a nice one owner, not BMW Used approved but a respectable garage (all the cars they seem to sell are on my dream wish list [Ferraris, Porsches, Mercs, GT-Rs etc.]) with Warranty. 32k for facelift, a lot of options (all my preferences + comfort access and more) 41k on the clock though which is more than I was looking at but will see how much I can knock them down, going to go see it this Saturday.

Still looking, seen a couple goers but waiting for mine to come back from BMW so I can part ex it. They taking long with it though :(
