Mac vs PC

The guy above with two instances of Mac Book Pro hardware failure, does not this tell you they are badly made?

In all my years of owning Dell machines I have had zero fail and have had in excess of 10 machines personally.

well thats conclusive 100% of mac book pros' fail and 0% of dells fail.....

Mac user here.

Had an Apple as my first computer at 5 years old.
Switched to PC when I was 10.
Switched back to Mac when I was 20.

I just got bored of reinstalling Windows every few months. Even after defrags, the PC just felt sluggish. OSX feels just as good as the day I bought it. I really enjoy using it and now it annoys me when I go back to Windows computers and the hard drive is randomly whirring away.

Hardware wise, the innovative multi touch glass track pad with the various gestures is something that I really like, as well as the unibody design, the magnetic power lead. Just these little touches along with the OS justify the higher price tag for me.

I used to be an over-clocker during my teens. Yes, I was part of the AMD Athlon 1700+ OC craze and have owned 2 XPCs. I do miss those days, purely for the gaming, but now I seriously couldn't care less about over clocking...or PC gaming for that matter. I just wanted something that worked, out of the box and worked reliably.

Who knows, I may return to the PC in future, but right now, I'm a Mac user, my whole family uses Macs, along with the airport and the Apple TV 2. It does what I need, and it does it perfectly.

Why are there Mac users on these forums?

Can you overclock a Mac now?

Typical Windows fanboys saying everything is restricted in OS X. Why not venture into the Terminal if you're so pro? There are many, many options only available through there and functions that let you do tonnes of geeky stuff you'd all love.

What's the problem with the trackpad/mouse only having primary button enabled? For most users, that's all they need, and you're given the option to turn secondary on if you want. I plugged in my Razor Deathadder and the extra buttons were automatically recognised and now serve window management for me.

Typical whinging because something is different.

Reading through this thread there is one thing that is abundantly clear. It's purely down to personal preference. A Mac has nothing over a PC and vice versa other than nicer physical design (open to debate). Each of the OSs have their failings and strengths but ultimately there is nothing that makes you sit back and go "hey you know what - that's a brilliant reason for buying either"...

Stop being so rational, this is a fanboi war! :p

i've got both macs and pcs. tbh they each serve their own purpose and each do their respective tasks well.

i don't see it as pc vs mac at all; they both have their jobs that i use them for...

I'll bring this up again since it hasn't really been answered and I want to know

What exactly are these different purposes? A PC can do anything you want and need. What does the Mac offer that a PC doesn't? What does it do better? There has to be something to justify that price tag?

Well it has, many times and ignored. Design, build quality and form factor are all contributing factors. As is OSx itself and many Mac only bits of software.

And, yet again; what price tag? Comparing like for like they're priced pretty similarly.

For example, a high end 13" laptop such as the Thinkpad x1:

Intel Core i5-2520M Processor (2.5GHz, 3MB L3, 1333MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64
13.3" Premium HD (1366x768) LED Backlit Display
Intel® HD Graphics 3000
4 GB DDR3 - 1333MHz (1 DIMM)
TrackPoint with Fingerprint Reader and Clickpad
320 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm

£1053

MBP 13"

Intel Core i5 2.3Ghz
OSx Lion
13.3" 1366x768 LED backlit display
Intel® HD Graphics 3000
4 GB DDR3 - 1333MHz (2x2gb DIMM)
320 GB Hard Disk Drive, 7200rpm

£999

Sorry - I'll leave now... but not before looking knowingly at my PC brothers and smirking at the poor gullible overly image concious hipsters that have paid too much for their underspecced Macs... take that hipsters!

Design, usability, form factor, support. The operating system is infinitely more refined and aesthetically pleasing, yet vastly capable.

Oh, and the 'price tag' argument is bunk. You can get all those benefits for a lower TCO if you're savvy :)

The argument here is for the standard user.

I game on my personal PC. Yes, macs have bery limited gaming capability, but no where near enough to warrant buying one over a PC.
I also run a business. My order management software only runs on, yes, you guessed it, Windows. The label software only works on windows, both for my Zebra, Citizen and brother label machines.
My server is irrelevant, but runs WHS as its just easier!
My laptop, again, is used for both business and personal, so requires the order software to work, as well as other programs, such as some astromomy software, which again, does not work on a mac.
I have an HP touchpad. This needs nothing more than the internet and email, so webOS is perfectly fine! As would an iPad, android etc.

You cannot throw money at these problems and say, "well you gotta buy the software", as it simply does not exist.

The same applies to macs.

Come on you cant be serious tell me your kidding right. Dont forget the white socks and sandals as well.

Why would he be joking?

Find me a laptop that is as well made as any of the current lineup, especially the MacBooks.
Find me a laptop that has a trackpad as good as the current MacBooks.

Once you actually start looking, you find they are the same price as Apple kit, and still not as well made...

There will be one problem with that...

It also speeds the clock of the computer up, so it's not perfect :(

The bottom line generally tho is no you can't over clock them.

Once in Windows you can over clock the GPUs tho.
