Macs price tag... why?

Im thinking of an iMac since its a nice desktop and it has a large screen and on the higher end ones an 8800, whilst the macbook only has an intel GMA X3100, (which as far as intergrated graphics go i am impressed with) and the macbook pro only has an 8600, (but ive heard stories about that 8600 series being bad). Either way any iMac will offer better graphics than I have now.

I used to think that till I compared a similar spec Dell laptop to a MAcbook pro.

Same.

I was going to get a Macbook again for moving to London, then realised that it was probably over priced. Looked at dell and to get a similar spec I was only saving about £50 at the time...

I have a MBP, The reason Mac has a higher price is because they can.

You can not use just any hardware on them, eg lots of graphics cards are not supported etc.

The do however provide good support and performance improvements with there products. OSX is easy and straight forward without a lot of the problems windows has. Windows problems are inherent with its design to make everything compatible.

Peope will pay more for the mac as:
1) it looks a damn site nicer
2) Straight forward to set-up and use
3) long term experience nicer without having to reformat every 6 months to regain the speed.

these reasons alone justify it for me.

Certainly hit the nail on the head with that. Totally agree.

Apple is a huge successful company with a huge turnover, if their prices were too high, they would have done something about it years ago.

:rolleyes:If you genuinely don't think Mac's are overpriced then you're crazy.

I don't. They're well priced in my opinion. I must be crazy.. Oh no lets cry about it.

Try and build a PC to the same spec as a Mac Pro and you'll never get near the price. Even Dell can't get within £250.

How much higher education discount do you get a mac mini?

Cheers Justin!

There margins must be really tight on the mac mini, which is kinda good for me as I know I will be getting value for money!

oh a bit off topic but on my hackintosh (dont hate me, its purely to test os x before i buy my mac mini)

How can I get mac os x to work with my pc uk meyboard properly? I found a thing called british-windows2.rsc or something. This has mapped 99% of the keys correctly now.

Mainly just wondering why apple hasnt fully supported pc keyboards.

I just think 3 ports is pretty poor these days. My PC has 6 on the back, and even my last notebook had 4. Then there's the complete lack of anything like HDMI, S-Video, eSATA, and so on. I know Macs are going for minimalist, but it shouldn't be at the sacrifice of useful and valuable features that the competing PC products have had for ages already.

If you don't understand what I posted (twice in fact) then you simply don't understand economics. Why would people buy , say, an Audi A4 when a Mondeo is cheaper? Maybe because the Audi is better designed, better looking and better built so deserves the higher price. The Audi is not overpriced nor is it cheap just like an Apple computer.

Anyway, as has already been said similar spec'd PCs especially laptops (same weight, features, battery life etc) aren't much cheaper than a Mac.

One thinks you are trolling...

As opposed to Apple, who put on barely any ports at all?

I have no need for serial or parallel ports (EDIT or HDMI or eSata as you mention) and although Apple can be a bit tight on the port count for some people (not me) they are at least all neatly in one place rather than scattered seemingly at random.
