Mafia 3

That would be the natural continuation and possibly conclusion (?) to the story. Mafia was set in the 30's I think, with Mafia 2 being the 1950's?

Thats what I was going to assume, 30-50-70 would be good.

Also, some thoughts on mafia 2's ending in spoiler:
Joe and Vito go seperate ways in cars, with hints that Joe will be killed. Game then fades out with them both still alive to continue the story.

The Getaway I think.

Just searched for that on Youtube and it's alright. I would love a British gangster game set in the 50-60's. I preferred the setting in Mafia compared to GTA so would like it to remain in America where it naturally sits. Moreover, I just tend to like games that people hate, for example Kayne and Lynch. :D

The getaway was so underrated

I know, way ahead of it's time, detailed maps of London (for the time) authentic cars, great sound track, great voice overs (Who the bird 'Arry? sort 'er out now!)

It was very hard as well, I remember being stuck on it on a few missions. lol a few of the gangs on it as well "Bethnal Green Mob" as well as the yardies etc..

Good times.

Never tried Black Monday, the second game. Hmm wonder if it works on PCSX2.

After some digging, apparently they started making a third in the series, and even had a tech demo, which includes Piccadilly Circus and more real licensed cars, Vectras, Corsas etc.. but it was cancelled :( gutted, looks great as well, the world is much more filled with people compared to the older ones.

That was more military resistance was it not? It was a good gaame nevertheless but I want some proper gangster **** lol with all the stereotyping thrown in. :D

Mafia 1 is a true masterpiece, game so far ahead of its time that it look great even today, especially with unlimited draw distance mod.

Every mission unique, in unique location, with amazing cutscenes and great writing...with physics better than most dedicated racing games of the time..

Mafia 2 had the potential to be similar masterpiece, but unfortunately to achieve it, another year of development was needed...and 2K was impatient, so they forced 2K Czech to gut the game, rip out half the content..for example whole melee combat system was gutted, the script was supposed to branch and have 4 different endings, missions were supposed to be lot longer and there was a lot of side content planned, all scrapped..

What remained in Mafia 2 was still great - the atmosphere was beautiful, the mission design was stellar. Shootouts very very well done, guns had great punch (that shotgun!), cars had, again, amazing physics (on sim setting). I loved playing it, but yeah it could have been so much more.

Now: MAFIA III

No longer developed by 2K Czech. No longer written and designed by Daniel Vavra, who created first two (he now works on amazing looking Kingdom Come: Deliverance).
It is being led by a guy who did the utter trash in form of Star Wars Force Unleashed.

HOWEVER, the "seventies in Louisiana" setting has a lot of potential, and there are still about 20 people in the team at Hangar 13 who came from 2K Czech (the rest went to Warhorse with Vavra). There is a possibility that it will be good. I hope so at least.

I'm replaying Mafia I and I'm struck by how well 'directed' the cinematics are. Compared to today's quick shots, close ups, camera shakes and motion blur, having the subtle music, gentle pans, long duration per camera angle and long shots shots with fantastic voice acting make Mafia I much more immersive and tense than today's methods.

I also noticed that game manages to have two people speaking at once- as in, when someone interupts someone, they actually speak over the first person. For some reason, in modern games, when someone interrupts someone else, the first person stops talking mid sentence, then there is an awkward gap, and then the interrupter says "stop!/wait/shush!" or whatever, instead of the interrupter actually talking over the original talking person. If Mafia could do it 13 years ago, why can't games today?

I'll have to have a look into that mod!

I thought I was the only person who liked the physics; it take skill to master the cars and you actually have to think ahead in the slower cars so you don't lose speed. Driving with the manual gearbox is also much faster, which is nice, and it actually has a working analogue clutch!

The driving model was way ahead of its time and more complex/featured than most games even today - however I found it kind of tedious in the long run - was kind of cool and especially period setting at first there was a real sense of achievement when you did your first drive about - but then I got tired of having to put that much into it every time you wanted to go anywhere much.

Speaking of driving, thats just reminded me of the sports car race mission :D

They had to patch it because it was too difficult for people to complete, I was playing in the days before I had internet and I'm not kidding it took me weeks to get past that level!!

Ha ha its funny you mention that, I tried for about a week before i looked and found a cheat online.
You could cut through a bit of the track, lopping off half the circuit.

The race mission was hard, so hard, but the sense of achievement was amazing.
And yeah the physics is just so good. Mafia 2 also had amazing car physics, I loved the driving thanks to it.

I completed it once when I had the 'Sold out' disk version of the game and didn't know what patches were :p I just put it on super easy now, knowing that I finished it once many years ago
