Magni 3

True, thanks for advice.

I have my Magni 3 now with my K712's. Noticed a slight hiss on the right channel of my 712's when actually turn the volume control up or down. Seems weird, is this normal?

As already said, not uncommon in headphone amps. Don’t play anything through it and wang it all the way up and down a few times and it should stop.

Has quieted down a lot now thanks.

Very happy with the setup overall btw :) I'm still using the AE-5 for its DAC and DSP features.

I thought you could not use an already amplified headphone output from Soundblaster AE5 to an Magni 3 headphone amp ? Doesn't this damage the headphone amp long term.

I don't know if I am right on the above since am new to headphone amps, maybe someone better can correct me, I wonder if this is why people are needing the schiit modi 3 or modi multibit so they get an optical input and can use their existing soundblasters dac to the modi 3s optical input, then this carries out the dsp/sbx surround safely to the magni 3 or other headphone amp.

You'd set the AE-5 up to use the speaker output as a line-out and connect the external amp to that (or go via optical out but that potentially loses some features) that way you aren't putting an amplified signal into the amp - though if you turn the volume down same difference except potentially impacting the signal to noise performance.

Cheers, yes I believe if you go the speaker output mode at least on the SB Z card you lose out on the SBX surround. I take it that is the same with AE-5 and with speaker output ?

You can apply headphone virtualisation to line-out with the AE-5 so I assume it all works whichever output you use. All the acoustic engine stuff is still enabled in that mode I've not really played around with it much though.

ok cheers

I've purchased a Magni 3 and connected it to my headphone socket on my soundblaster z to run my DT990 pro's, is this the correct way to do it I don't seem to be having any problems.

Is the Soundblaster Z headphone output amplified? If so then you are preamplifying.

Have you tried on the speaker / line out as a point of comparison?

Sounds like you need to to get a stack on the go with a USB DAC :p

so what problems would this cause?

It might not cause any problem, preamplifying is often needed in a lot of source equipment to take a low output to a line level one for ultimate amplification.

In PCs sound cards with dedicated headphone outputs have been developed as the output is amplified to drive headphones (some of which have much higher impedance). Historically this was never the case as HiFi headphones were not typically used in desktop computing and were easy to drive simply from an unamplified line out. Or, a speaker system which amplified itself was used.

Preamping a signal too much can cause clipping, for example. The source is also just that, the source. If you have a poor source whatever else happens further down the chain is affected. That being said, you should supply the cleanest output to your amp - If you don't need to preamp avoiding preamping in your sound card may be a good start.

The reason I asked was if you had tried the line out as a point of comparison. Bottom line is you won't know if you don't try. It's not a "will work or won't" black and white affair with audio. It's very subjective and what you find sounds better might not for me someone else.

Does anyone know how often Schiit restock the europe store? want to grab a Modi/Magni stack, but currently out of stock.

Definitely contact them. When I bought my stack they were stating out of stock for UK plug adaptors. I asked for UK ones and they sorted it anyway without any delay.

Thanks I'm on with testing now not really noticed any difference to be honest?
