Major upgrade (£3000+ build) critique? :P

I've got a separate budget for a proper HDTV, anyway £3000 would only be a waste surely if i wasnt going to make the most of my new rig? :P

I guess saying that im going to spend that probably gives an impression of "zomg ive got loads of money, im going to just cluelessly go out and buy lots of expensive stuff!!!!11one" but im not :P

As for the case - i think im going to stick with the Antec P182 (see - im not going silly on the case! lol) ;)

No, spend the money and be happy. :)

I just find it weird to spend that kind of money on a computer and not to go for some kind of RAID solution.

Im ultra paranoid about RAID and whatnot - ive had some nasty experiences in the past lol :P "keep it simple" - is my new motto when it comes to storage :D

But yeah i dont wanna come across as some snotty git going "OMG LOOK HOW MUCH MONEY IM SPENDING!" cus well - its part of a loan anyway, and im treating myself :P

woo!

id suggest getting 3 screens instead of 1 30 inch

i.e. resolution wise
3 X 1600*1200 or
1X 1920*1200(middle) + 2X 1600*1200 or

1X1920*1200 + 2X 1680*1050

mix and match etc, you get more desktop space and instead of havin 1 huge monitor you
can play games on the 1920*1200 which is much easier then the 2560*1600 resolution you get on the 30 inch, i mean id love to see what pc can play crysis at 2560*1600 with everything on high no AA. but you gotta think about why get a huge monitor if you can play games maxed out on it

You won't get value for money for 3k. My rig was about £1200 and apart from Crysis which is just stupid, every single game runs max framerate on max settings. I doubt you would see a noticable difference between your 3k spec and my 1.2k spec (see sig). You'd still have enough cash to buy an entire new system again in a few months if you wanted. Any money spent over about £1200 is going to give you about 5% gain max no matter how much you spend.

If the money is part of a loan even better reason not to spend 3k.

Nice one. :)

Considering one of the OcUK 24" monitors myself. What's your verdict?

Awesome screen. Took it to the last LAN I went to and I know 3 people who have ordered one after seeing mine :)

We play a variety of games including Call of Duty 4 and World of Warcraft and it looks amazing in all of these games.

Colours are bright and screen is huge :)

This board is like the save money squad.

The OP didnt come on this board for money saving advice but to get the best possible PC for 3 grand, I think if you want to spend that much good on you, you'll get a cracking spec cutting edge system.

Best set up so far is smirnoff's on page one, thats what i would go for.

Bear in mind that if you are getting a 30" screen then you need some SERIOUS gfx power if you want to be playing games in native resolution. In other words I would be looking at an SLI/X-fire setup.

I know where you are coming from, but I think people feel duty-bound to highlight the diminishing returns when spending that kind of money - ESPECIALLY when the money is coming from a loan rather than him actually having the cash sitting around.

My personal opinion is that if you need to borrow money to buy such a system then you should revise your budget. A system costing £1500-2000 will still be cutting edge and extremely high-end but will reduce the need to borrow so much cash and thus be better for your future.

I cant argue with your logic HangTime, didnt read the whole thread, if your borrowing the doe then i'd go with your advice. If money is no object then i dont see the problem in a 3k comp.

Get a MacPro, and trick it out to £3000. Install windows. Win.

Drive 8 30" monitors if you spec it correctly. Beautiful, quiet case, no building hassle. Did I mention 8 cores?

[EDIT TO ADD]

Oh and massive resale value.

I think it's going to have a longer life span than 6 months somehow :|

Besides, i've survived with not upgrading for around 5 years, so i'm pretty damn sure i can do the same with this one...

Been thinking of getting 2x Dell 2408s.. which would be cheaper than getting 1x 3008 (by a couple of hundred quid) but... im not sure id really utilise a secondary monitor.. id rather have 1 single bigger screen for movies + games.

hmm or maybe i should get 3x 2408s and a triple head :D HAH! (j/k)
