Major upgrade (£3000+ build) critique? :P

This will do you fine. :)

And then spend a few hundred on some nice watercooling for the CPU and save the rest. :)

Why you would want to spend £600+ on a CPU I dont know and then £250 on a motherboard is just silly to be honest. Especailly when your not going to be doing some extreme overclocking with them or anything.

Yeah i'm not :P My spec was using the Q9550 (£387)

as for Tri-SLI - hmm tempting... but im not sure i want the extra noise + heat (and cost lol)

I'll wait til the 9800GTX (maybe GX2) comes out and weigh it up i think...

Nope the X48 is simply a Cherrypicked X38 but you can get DDR2 ones, I have not seen benches that make it better than any others or make me want to buy one.

The 790I Ultra so far on XS is great but only DDR3 so far.

As to the part up top about DDR3 and sky high Latencys or Timings (he means this), thats not true as some on the new DDR3 has good timings and its not compairable to DDR2 same as for DDR1.

There is no need to run the Memory at same speed as FSB apart from a few benches will score higher, so running DDR3 bellow 1600mhz DDR Speed the likes of Corsair can run very tight Timings, Tighter than most DDR2 (there was review few months back).

So a good CPU at 1600FSB with Memory at 800mhz or a very good CPU at 2400FSb with Memory at 1200mhz (limit of DDR2 and slack Timings and is it avail as 2x2GB ?, DDR3 is and will run that speed like a walk in the park.

I'm sue the system I'm looking at would be a close match for just over £1300...

I'd never spend 3K on a PC - rather spend it like i did on a new Mini cooper but hay if thats your bag then 3k it is.....I'd rather not see 2k ****** away to have just a good system in five months as everything has moved on. save your cash and go on holiday do somthing worth the Money.

Good plan. Especially if you're spending that kind of dough.

At least spending the money on a computer leaves you with something tangible. Once you get back from holiday, you've actually got nothing to show for the money you spent..

Excatly!

Plus - I bet if i posted "im spending £3k on a holiday" someone would post: "zomg what a waste - spend £1k on a package deal to xyz and spend the rest on a decent PC" lol

OK so you're saying spend less money and go on holiday - that's really helpful. thanks for that.

Not wishing to cause offence Bud, Just personal preference –you wish to spend 3K on your PC go for it. Just about to spend five times that on a new car I don’t really need as there is a brand new Company car on the drive as it is…….

Thing is with PC you spend 3k on a system and the guy next to you spends £1200 and it runs just as impressive. I think it not what you want to spend but what you need it for.

Unless your producing high end media that is but for simple gaming is it not over kill?
