Malaysia Grand Prix 2012, Kuala Lumpur - Race 2/20

Does anyone know if the rear rain light is connected to any other setting on the car, or if its an independent switch?

I thought it was linked to the user of wet tyres, but Alonso's was still flashing when he went onto the slicks. I know that this year they are limited to 2 engine maps, one for wet and 1 for dry, maybe the light is linked to that? If so it would mean Alonso was running in the dry on slicks with a wet weather engine map. If that's the case, it would be interesting to find out why?

I think its completely independent...

I like the unwitten rule of thumb in endurance/multi class racing where in the event of a collision between cars of different classes the blame lies with the faster class car.

If you have the speed to lap someone, you should have the speed to be able to pass them safely.

Yeah that sounds like a decent rule but the trouble is F1 drivers have been treated like children for years and tend to act like them, I'm sure if that rule was brought in you'd get the likes of Massa doing his 'hog the racing line' routine and cutting up/hitting everyone except Alonso.

I think it goes to show how easy it is to be at the front. I really thought that Vettel became a supremely composed and collected driver with a good head on his shoulders, but just two races away from the front row of the grid and he's starting to show small cracks in his composure.

My feeling is that we're more likely to see the Vettel of two years ago who made a few big mistakes throughout the season than the nearly flawless Vettel of last year.

The trouble is now that leading into the first corner is vitally important, the tyres are an utter disgrace to racing so anyone having to chase just eats up their tyres trying and it's counter-productive.

That's why Button does so well he looks after his tyres well so it's a rabbit and the tortoise situation.

LOL hog the racing line, like every driver should be doing hence it called the racing line?

Massa is probably one of the easiest drivers to overtake, so not sure where this comment comes from :)

There's blue flags and things in endurance racing too, its just expected that the faster car has the speed to react and pass safely. I doesn't stop them driving into each other though :p

The speed difference between a backmarker and a leader in F1 is much less than between a P1 and GT1 car though, and F1 drivers have got used to expecting back markers to just jump out of their way. Maybe they could bring in 'track day' style rules where cars being lapped are expected to get out of the way, but only on the straights. In the corners they are entitled to use the racing line as much as the guy trying to pass them?

Or, the overtaking driver could just use some common sense and not pull back onto the racing line too soon :p

Vettel should learn how to overtake before blaming others. He went past and cut across infront of Karth far too early, hench HITTING HIM.

Vettel seems quite normal, but in the end he's just as moody as the rest.

Button just messed up and sat in no mans land dithering. He should have sat back from Karth or just thrown his car up the inside.

Hopefully lessons were learned boys!

Indeed. Very easy to be happy and come across as a nice guy when the sun shines out of your backside everytime you get in the fastest F1 car on the grid.

He is a petulant child and I have never liked him to be honest.

Is this the same Massa who Hamilton struggles to overtake cleanly and in 2011, collided with, on numerous occasions, when the overtake failed? Is that the Massa we are talking about?

Looks like the McLaren had issues keeping its tyres up to temp /getting them up to temp

While I appreciate the rain is a great leveller of different cars, I was a little surprised how much Schumi and JB struggled past some of the back markers (I would include SV as well, but as his puncture happened so close to the end of the race, he didnt have much time to recover).

I was even a little surprised how Lewis still couldnt manage to keep up with the Sauber (or Ferrari) in clean air....or rain lol

I have to admit to being a little surprised at how vitriolic SV was towards Karthekain in the interview - yeah JB made a mistake which ruined his race, but on the plus side he made some good tactical calls to be in that position to start with

McLaren / JB/ LH are very lucky so many others (like Merc, RB etc) didnt score major points in either championship - Ferrari are going to have to do a quick turnaround (and pretty major) to be a threat in the dry , Im sure they are capable of doing this but its still going to be tough, but well done to Alonso for winning, although I admit I was cheering for Perez to beat him lol
