Malaysia Grand Prix 2012, Kuala Lumpur - Race 2/20

Actually watched the replay - quite pleased I did and avoided the 50min intermission.

Alonso did great in a poor car, though its hard to tell how well he really did as the comparison to Massa makes it hard. He didnt do anything wrong but I felt he was lucky Perez didnt get the chance to properly challenge him.

Perez for the first half of the race just seemed to 'luck' in with the pit calls but really showed his skills in the second half by chasing down Alonso. Really has done his career the biggest favour ever and drove like the hungry driver he is. Really glad for Peter Sauber to boot...

Hamilton did nothing wrong, but never had to worry about much around him, which probably was for the best as he needed a solid drive. He can start afresh in the next race and ignore whats happened already.

Button and Vettel just were off form and made silly mistakes (were both involving a HRT?) no top driver should be making - theres no excuse. Annoyed Button didnt take the race by the scruff of its neck and really attempt to get a point or at least a good drive.

Think thats all of the notable performances - less said about Massa the better, he must have some really rude pics of Montezemolo

ps3ud0

Yep both hit the same HRT :p Shame Button had to pit twice as he would have been in around 7-8th if he only pitted once for the front wing.

Vettel is a touch harsh with his comments on Kartha...n.

Frustrating yes, very much so, but I don't think calling him an idiot is sensible, at least not to the press - echoes of Monaco and Hamilton last season.

Interesting that Lewis lost 8 seconds to Alonso just in the pits, that's a lot of time to be giving away for free.

He had to be held because of traffic, hardly giving it away for free unless you want a drive-through for unsafe release? Didn't they also try to take tape off his brake ducts too which didn't go well!

And you imagine this forum if Hamilton had made those comments. Vettel is at least the petulant child of any other driver when things aren't going well. Of course people think that went away because he's had 2 years to smile about.

I'm still of the school that back markers should be overtaken like anyone else, get rid of the blue flags. Why should the back marker run on marbles in the wet when the lead driver has a car 5 seconds per lap faster.

There is improvement yes, but I'm sorry, imo, Schumi will never be a world champ again, in any car, so what is the point. Merc would be better off investing in a hungry young new driver such as the likes of perez if they want to see real results. Schumi is 43 years old. How can someone twice the age of most of the others have the aggression, daring and sharpness of the likes of Hamilton and co? Schumi should have stayed retired just like other great sportsmen normally do when they've peaked.

they are already investing in di resta.... the same way ferrari are investing in perez

80% of the grid might aswell retire if schumacher isnt good enough including button what a race from the wet weather champion.....

ended up about as far back as schumacher and finished miles behind cos hes **** at overtaking just like vettel

It's easy to "sing when you're winning" like Vettel has the last couple of years, smile for the cameras, hug Uncle Christian, wave the finger, say "thank you boys" on the radio as you drive off from pole for another victory.

Not having it so easy this season and now we can see he's no different to Lewis when it comes to spitting his dummy. Cant see what the HRT did wrong did Vettel want him to vanish off the racetrack or something?

There is a gif going about of Vet giving the HRT the finger then trying to corner then giving the finger again, can't hotlink though :D

It was all round a terrible stop. Hamilton missed his marks by quite a lot so the whole pit crew had to shuffle. The rear jack man was then really slow to get the rear up, then they faffed around getting the tape off the brake ducts, and then when they came to release him they had to hold him because of traffic in the pitlane. A combination of mistakes by the driver and the team and bad luck.

He was not held for 8 seconds

I know, but it contributed and had it not happened then even with the other pit stop issues he would have got out closer.

Some things are unfortunate and unavoidable, so I'd still not call it giving away time for free.

Haha welcome to the real World Vettel :)

This season is looking like a true classic. No one team has a car to whoop everyone, some smaller teams leaving their mark already and the big names going backwards in the race! Fantastic :)

The tape was taken off in a later pit stop wasn't it? But yeah, He missed his marks and rear jack took two attempts to get under and lift the car, Then the release of course. must have felt like an age to Lewis in the car I'd imagine.

Not sure what is happening with Lewis though, He obviously has the pace in the car or he wouldn't be sticking it on pole, But then shows no real pace at any one point through out both the last gp's, You would think even in tyre saving mode or fuel saving mode he would still bang a couple of fast laps in somewhere, It's just not happening. Strange.

He was not held for 8 seconds

I agree, in fact he wasn't held at all, or at least shouldn't have been. If the rear jack guy had managed to lift the car in a timely fashion, instead of after ~4 seconds of trying, he'd have been straight back out into the large gap. So gotta agree that it was simply a give-away.

It's a shame too, because with Hamilton coming out just ahead of Alonso and seemingly a little bit slower than him over the wet stint, we were robbed of what would have been a very exciting battle in the wet imo.

oh and Vettel once again shows how he thinks he has the god given right to every inch of the track, I really hope Mark can equal or better him this year now EBD is gone (even if that means they are 1,2 in the championship) He needs to be taught a lesson that boy, And it's only Mark who can give it to him being in the same car.

I like the unwitten rule of thumb in endurance/multi class racing where in the event of a collision between cars of different classes the blame lies with the faster class car.

If you have the speed to lap someone, you should have the speed to be able to pass them safely.

Of course if back markers are deliberately getting in the way thats a different story, but I don't think the HRT was in the wrong in either of the incidents yesterday. They can get out the way as best they can, but they can't just vanish.

Calling him an idiot is just an angry reaction from someone who's race didn't go how they planned.

I think it goes to show how easy it is to be at the front. I really thought that Vettel became a supremely composed and collected driver with a good head on his shoulders, but just two races away from the front row of the grid and he's starting to show small cracks in his composure.

My feeling is that we're more likely to see the Vettel of two years ago who made a few big mistakes throughout the season than the nearly flawless Vettel of last year.

To be fair to both Mclarens, in the opening laps they were pulling away from third and Lewis opened quite a gap to Jenson.

However, it was the later race pace which seemed to let them down, which seems strange I agree. I hope they can fix that in time for China.

Does anyone know if the rear rain light is connected to any other setting on the car, or if its an independent switch?

I thought it was linked to the user of wet tyres, but Alonso's was still flashing when he went onto the slicks. I know that this year they are limited to 2 engine maps, one for wet and 1 for dry, maybe the light is linked to that? If so it would mean Alonso was running in the dry on slicks with a wet weather engine map. If that's the case, it would be interesting to find out why?
