Malaysian Grand Prix 2013, Kuala Lumpur - Race 2/19

He needs to focus on being a racing driver and then worry about being a nice guy when he retires, a la Schumacher.

Difference is, schumi had numerous fans regardless. Vettel seems to have very, very few - I guess this is why he is trying to come off as a nice guy. He fails miserably though.

Does Vettel not have many fans in Germany?

The more titles/race/points he wins, the greater his popularity will get.
It also helped MSc immensely when he moved to Ferrari and made them great.
Doing "it" for Ferrari, definitely carries more kudos, than doing it for RBR.

Schumacher already had a healthy fanbase in his Benetton days. I remember the roar in the stadium section in Hockenheim as he challenged Berger for the lead in 1994, and again in 1995 when Hill span out at the beginning of lap 2.

The difference being Schumacher was the first German F1 driver to really capture the imagination of the German public. Bellof may have done, had he not been killed at Spa, and while it's hugely unlikely he would ever have had the level of support Schumacher enjoyed, any success on his part would have likely softened the level of support Schumacher received nationally.

I guess Germany are just used to success now, so it's going to take an outstanding personality to win over the majority in the way Schumacher did. Most of us thought Vettel might have had such a personality early on, but now very clear there are two sides to him, and that rather takes the sheen off the lad.

No more so than Alonso being at Ferrari, Kimi at Lotus or Hamilton at Mercedes, I wouldn't think? And look at how many people were queuing up for the Ferrari seat.

I don't think having to team mate Vettel is going to make people think "you know what, I will pass on being in a Newey designed car in a year of new regulations"...

I'm not saying they would pass on the opportunity, but surely they would rather drive with someone that knows how to be a team player?

several big differences imo;

1) the obvious first - as discussed earlier, its still Ferrari (however much I hate the team) its still THE marque in F1 and probably will be for some time to come. Even in "bad" years, from a brand point of view its still better than driving for any other team. Most drivers would KILL for this seat, even if they don't stand a chance of competing with the driver in the other seat.

2)Kimi may be a very good driver (maybe even a great one), but he hasn't got the name / consistency of the others. He may be Lotus No1 currently, but it wouldn't take that much to oust him (for the record Grosjean is never going to do this)

3) The current Merc lineup is probably their ideal pairing. A huge headline maker along side a national icon (given how important nationality is to Merc inparticular). Still question marks about the car and about the team, and where personnel are fitting in long term.

4) For right or wrong RBR is centred around SV and has been for 3 years + , Im not sure whether Mark ever had a fair chance in the team, but if he ever did he certainly hasn't for a couple of years at least. Imo the ONLY type of driver that would go into this team is a very young charger who has impressed over the last year or two, more senior drivers imo have got too much to lose.

It may be a possibly worse car (in a - currently - not that successful team) but Lotus imo is the best team for a senior /experienced driver (inc McLaren, who Im still convinced will win races this season)

Yes I think a lot of people would be put of by how much RBR love SV, and imo last weekend confirmed this.

So Webber is thinking of quitting F1?

Looks to be purely rumour at this point.

If he does go, does Vettel being with the team put others off?

I was discussing this with a mate the other day. He isn't happy at RBR of course, but where else is he going to finish 1st/2nd? All the other teams capable of finishing there already have top drivers that I wouldn't see replacing with Webber. It's almost like he has 2 options. Suck it up and stay at RBR in Vettels shadow, or sack it off and quit. Maybe he is opting for the latter!

Was Horner watching the race, did he see Rosberg pass Hamilton despite the team orders from Mercedes?
As Webber said, looks like Seb has got his "protection".

Rosenberg isn't number 1 driver, triple world champion and a massive part of the team. Different rules for different people. Part and parcel of F1 and we should never lose that.
The only shame is he apologised, MS/senna etc, would never apologise.

As I say, it's not that he's thinking of just leaving RBR, he's thinking (allegedly) of quitting F1, so what team would he go to, doesn't even come in to it.

This isn't news, webber was odds on favourite to retire at the end of the season anyway.
Webber is playing the underdog car AGAIN, he loves it, that's where he feels constable. If he left at the end of the season, that's no different to what everyone was predicting before the season started, a total non story.

Aye, but even before this season I bet he realised it was a catch 22 situation for him if he did have any other desire to go to another team.. Suck it up or sack it off.

He's said a few times that he'd rather quit than to go down through teams, like Barrichello did.

Personally I'd love to see him move to a different team and fueled by revenge and the hatred of Seb have the seaosn of his life :p

That was my point, who would have him? Once you consider that, would he really be able to contend for podium spots and exact "revenge"?

Suppose his best shout at a decent seat would be Lotus if Kimi left (for Red Bull or something) or Ferrari but can't see why they'd want rid of Massa at the moment.

Yeah the Ferrari seat is like for like. He's hardly going to get them to remove Alonso as undisputed number 1.

Lotus could be a good shout though, but I still think that means he will be fighting for podiums rather than fighting for wins, and does he want to do that?

Tbh he's better than either of the TR drivers, and if nobody decent appears on the market for RBR to snap up (basically Kimi), then I see no reason why RBR wouldn't just offer him another 1 year deal worth £gazillion.
