Harry Redknapp has been named Premier League Manager of the Year after breaking into the top four with Tottenham.

Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal have monopolised the UEFA Champions League positions in recent seasons and were expected to dominate once more this term.

Manchester City were tipped to mount a strong challenge after investing heavily in their squad, with the likes of Tottenham, Aston Villa and Everton considered outsiders.

But Spurs have enjoyed a stunning campaign, recording victories over Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool at White Hart Lane.
Other highlights included the 9-1 demolition of Wigan in November, as well as the 1-0 triumph at Manchester City on Wednesday that guaranteed Champions League qualification for the first time in the club's history.

Tottenham could even finish third if they beat Burnley in their final game on Sunday and Arsenal slip up against Fulham.
Redknapp, who took charge in October 2008 when Spurs were bottom of the table, was thrilled with the accolade but paid tribute to his players and the rest of the backroom staff.

"I'm delighted to receive the award but it's a team effort with Kevin (Bond), Joe (Jordan), Clive (Allen), Tony (Parks), Tim (Sherwood), Les (Ferdinand) and all the coaching and fitness staff," he told the club's official website.

"Really, I'm just part of the team.

"It's all down to the players and what they've achieved. It's down to them really and a real honour to receive it."

The prize is decided by the Barclays awards panel, which is made up of football's governing bodies, the media and fans.

Redknapp becomes only the second manager since the formation of the Premier League to win the gong without having won the league, following in the footsteps of George Burley after the Scot guided Ipswich to fifth place in 2000/01.

A number of shock defeats for the top teams has contributed to an exciting season and the title race is still alive going into the final day with Chelsea and Manchester United competing for the trophy.

Who's your manager of the season?

Hodgson, he's got some fantatstic performances out of an average squad.
Redknapp just got Spurs to 4th in a season when Liverpool were rubbish.

I'm inclined to agree with your sentiment there JG. Whilst Spurs have been consistent, I think it really shows that when there Net Spend is beyond City, thats one of the contributing factors. Hodgson on the other hand has had much less resource available to him. His success relative to his resource is outstanding.

Thats not taking anything away from Harry as I think they are a worthy 4th placed team based on there performances this season

Agreed...find it unbelievable that dodgy 'arry got manager of yr award...should have gone to Hodgson in all honesty:).

Actually if they are going to hand out those awards to teams that get 4th place then Arsenal should have won it for the past few yrs lol:p

Fourth place over the past ten years:

01/02 - 71pts - Newcastle
02/03 - 67pts - Chelsea
03/04 - 60pts - Liverpool
04/05 - 61pts - Everton
05/06 - 67pts - Arsenal
06/07 - 68pts - Arsenal (level on points with 3rd place Liverpool)
07/08 - 76pts - Liverpool
08/09 - 72pts - Arsenal
09/10 - 70pts - Tottenham (with one game to play)

If Spurs beat Burnley tomorrow, it'll be the second highest points total for a fourth place team this decade.

It's got nothing to do with Liverpool being poor. :)

why is it so hard for people to understand Harry won the Premier League manager of the year award?

Hodgson is a shoe in to win the LMA Manager of the year award which is more appropriate for what he has achieved

The points tally is irrelevant, if Liverpool were as good as they should've been considering last years achievement then they would've finished at least 4th.

Ah that's different then, Ancelotti in that case :p

I don't understand this. Hodgson got to the cup final, big wow he pulled off a couple of good performances but fulham are positioned 12th in the league. They have actually done worse than year where they finished 7th.

Least with Redknapp, he can make his team perform well every week. And got to the semi's in the FA cup and quarters in the carling cup.

Plus JohnnyG looks like your hatred of spurs has mis-guided your judgement. It's not about Liverpool being cack this season, it's not our fault they blew it but with us getting (possibly 73pts) we would have challenged anyway.

And yet they weren't. But apparently that's Spurs' fault? :p

It's their own fault for being rubbish;)
I just think think it wasn't the hardest season to finish 4th due to the quality of the other teams vying for it and therefore not the massive achievement it's made out to be.
Same goes for the winners by the way, the top 3 have all been 'ok' but that's about it, and the winners will have a lot to thank the other 2 for :)

I think you're getting my hatred of Spurs mixed up with my hatred of Liverpool, Spurs hold little in the way of emotions for me these days.
If you read above you'll see where I changed my view when it was pointed out that this award was for the PL only.

Maybe so, but to be in with a chance of 3rd place as well? Especially when Arsenal were still in the title race not very long ago.

That proves my point, Arsenal have 1 point out of the last 12, any other year they'd be miles ahead of you.

Hodgson should have won it.

Without taking anything away from Redknapp/Spurs, the team with the 4th most expensive squad in the League looks like finishing 4th. Not that big an achievement.

Worse? Fulham have managed to nearly finish 10th in the league (still a win to get there - unlikely though) with one of the smallest squads in the league, a few long term injuries, and playing over 60 games this season, if i'm not mistaken it's the most played this season by a Premier League club? Having probably 14-17 fit 'first' team players at one stage, too. I think finishing 10-12th, Quarter Final of the FA Cup, Final of the Europa League is a magnificent achievement. The players Hodgson have bought are through a majority of sales, too - if you say he's spent £20m etc on players.

And if you say based on Premier League management, then it's Ancelotti not Redknapp. Not only that, that Spurs team has cost a **** load and should have been doing better over recent years regardless. He's done a good job, but with that team is it hard not to?
