Manchester United vs Liverpool 09/01/11 and other 3rd round FA Cup matches *SPOILERS*

This thread is pretty much the epitome of why I don't bothering posting in this part of the forum anymore, so many people more interested in winding others up than actually talking about football.

Do you not go to football games either then? Its what fans do to other fans. Don't take it so seriously.

United were poor today but for once I got the impression that it was down to the fact that Liverpool offered little to no goal threat rather than having a poor afternoon. Several times United just got the ball and messed around in defence, passing it between RF, JE, and MC.

The penalty put the game on life support and the sending off finished it completely. After that it was just two teams wandering around the pitch doing very little. I was waiting for the inevitable siege of the United goal but it never came. FT was very poor, although he had little to feed off, and rightfully was subbed.

It's hard to say about the penalty - I think there was contact but it was cheap. The sending off was the right decision though, you just can't tackle like that.

It's hardly going to go down as one of the classics - but I expect the game will be remembered for the penalty being the deciding point instead of the fact that Liverpool offered little to nothing going forward.

I see no improvement over Roy - they defended better but forward of that it was still as lethargic as ever. Still, good luck to KD in the future.

Oh, and whoever it was who made that Munich comment should be gone for good. There's no place for that - what has this game got to do with people who died decades ago?

Thankfully I can't be bothered to read through this thread which is probably just as well as it looks like a lot of rubbish has been posted.

My opinion on the game is this;

Probably wasn't a pen but it seems these days the legitimate ones aren't given and the dubious ones are so I can't see many arguments tbh. There's been a number of clear penalties we haven't been given this season so it was about time we got one even if it was iffy

Red card was spot on and ultimtimatly the reason why Liverpool lost, as they offered nothing following it

While it was 11 a side it was fairly even but that's to be expected seeing as Liverpool were on a high with their new manager and the most obvious fact that they raise their game every time they play us regardless of heir form

Overall was very impressed with our back four especially Rafael, but Evans was extremely commanding also and had Torres in his pocket for the majority of the game. Carrick looked very good in midfield and Giggs seemed to be rolling back the years with some of his runs

On one hand it's a shame Gerrard got himself sent off as it probably ruined the tie as a spectical but on the other hand they're out we're through and that's all that really matters :)

I'm just writing an essay on modernist poetry, and realising a great deal of it is nonsense. However, all has now become clear:

Fletcher, Carrick were woeful,
Nani seemed to have a bet
With someone pertaining to how
Few passes he could get away with today.
Giggs, he looked almost good
At points today which makes a change.
Utd's midfield was truly horrible overall though,
Conceded posession constantly,
Very poor passing, created
Very few real chances.

Only seen one replay of the penalty,
Missed the first 4 minutes of the game,
Looked,
Soft at best,
Dive at worst.
Red card was clear as day,
Off the ground,
Caught the player,
Landed with his full force in his studs,
No question.

Shantih, shantih, shantih

Good goal from Milner there, been saying all along to play him centre mid and 2nd time he does he scores. Was woeful defending at the start though from us.

So you saw no improvement but we defended better? :p

Now a serious point; I certainly did see a difference in our performance today. We played at a higher tempo, showed greater desire and passion than Roy ever managed to get the team to.

And lets not get carried away making rash judgements just yet; what more could he do other than lift the spirits in the camp? He only met up with the players this morning and his first game was away at OT where we ended up being down to 10 men for most of the game.

De Jong is that good at his job there's no reason to persist with him, Toure AND Barry so for once you actually have a valid point :p

To be fair to Liverpool, it didn't really work between midfield and attack but the whole side looked more composed on the ball and more willing to play themselves out of trouble.

Before the sending off I thought we done ok. It wasn't free flowing football by any means but you wouldn't expect it to be, away from home against Utd; we created a few half chances and were getting into some good positions.

After the red there was little we could do; Torres was isolated up front, spending most of the game closing down your back 4. Like you say though, when we got the ball we were far more composed than we have been and at least tried to play football rather than smash it long to Torres.

Is that not just because it was a United - Liverpool game though?

You could argue that if we hadn't gone to OT earlier in the season and put in the performance we did that day.

That was Hodgson's style of play though; 2 banks of 4, sit deep and try and make yourself difficult to break down. It's ok if your players are suited to that style of playing and if you're not looking to win the game.
