Mantle Feedback/Bugs

Just been looking at that bench from Anand and it is a part of Tasgar that isn't very CPU demanding, so gives a chance to show what Mantle is capable of over DX and I must admit, I was not expecting to see any benefit for non CPU bottlenecked scenarios but you can clearly see an improvement of 7.79%. Hands up for saying it would only alleviate the CPU bottleneck and Anand show a nice improvement from 71.8 on DX to 77.4 on Mantle.

Good stuff :)

8% isn't to be sniffed at. Likely a few small API efficiency savings adding up with more cores. Fewer thread locking issues interfering?

Not sure what was going on there. Disabling cores shouldn't make any difference and that chip does have a 15mb cache to help as well. For me though, I wanted to see what would happen when Mantle isn't CPU bottlenecked and this is what the 7.79% increase shows. Not brilliant but also not bad.

It is a great starting point because it's likely to be the smallest improvement that you might see. As soon as there is any kind of CPU limitation involved the performance difference just grows with it.

Do any of you BF4+Mantle testers have power meter? Would be interested if, to see if those who are seeing a benefit, the power consumption has gone up?

After all, in a CPU limited scenario without Mantle the GPU gets to have 'breather' as it waits for the CPU. And while those 'breathers' are only a few ms at a time, over a bit of time that would mean the GPU is not running at 100%. If consumption goes up, this might explain some of the crashes which not everyone is seeing.

Obviously, AMD will push more betas soon but another thing someone with too much time on their hands could do is learn how to use ProcessExplorer. With processexplorer is is possible to see individual threads of processes and hardware interrupts etc. so someone who knows what they are doing might be able to see what causes those Mantle CPU spikes. But like I said, I'm sure AMD are debugging that already.

Who isn't getting the Mantle + BF4 memory leaks issue? out of interest :)

Was chatting to a friend on line the other night and he swears he's had the memory leak under DX before. He said he knows when it happens as performance gets worse and worse and he hears his GFX card's fans start to spin down as if the card isn't being used as much, the game will eventually crash with the normal bf4.exe app error. Once he knew the symptoms he got in the habit of bringing up task manager before the crash and would see BF4.exe using up a load more mem than normal.

Not that I didn't believe him, as he normally has a fair idea of what he is talking about but I googled BF4 memory leak and there are signs of this going on with the game for a while.

So while it seems worse under Mantle - and yes, I do get it under Mantle after a few hours of straight play - it's seems like this could just be another BF4/Frostbite bug that Mantle is just exasperating.

One thing I haven't tested yet and not sure if anyone on here has as I can't keep up with these threads, is have those on x64 Windows tried both the x64 and x86 versions of BF4 in Mantle?

Everytime I load into BF4, before the map even finishes loading, the game crashes. I didn't have this before and it's only just started happening. Anyone know how I can fix this?

My first impressions are not good, I tested only for 5 minutes
I'm running 2x R9 280X in 5884x1080, I7 [email protected] and a mix of ultra/high settings
DirectX on test range my fps were from 60 to 75 and both cards from 97 to 99% usage
Mantle on test range my fps were from 35 to 65 and both cards from 60 to 99% usage

Also I'm running my GPUs undervolted and it was stable without any problems, now with the new drivers I need to raise the voltages a little bit, but still less than default.

i rolled back to 13.12 because of this. 14.1 drivers would work fine for a day but next day constant crashes and poor frame rate if the map did actually load.

EDIT
i also done a fresh reinstall of the drivers which fixed it but had the same issue the next day

Hmm.. this is very odd then. I'll update if it occurs again. Curious to know what's causing it..

I get freezing both with Mantle and Dx, and Dx freeze has an error "DirectX function "GetDeviceRemovedReason' failed with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG ("The application's device failed due to badly formed commands sent by the application. This is a design-time issue that should be Investigated and fixed.")." Any fix for that? I want to use 14.1 but both Dx and Mantle is broken with this driver, I did DDU and re-install many times, it works fine as long as I don't shutdown, after a fresh boot something gets corrupted or something.
